TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report ruthenium(II)-catalyzed redox-neutral annulation of benzamides and propargyl alcohols, in which propargy alcohols act as one-carbon units.
Abstract: Internal alkynes have been used widely in transition-metal-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions, in which they generally serve as two-carbon reaction partners. Herein, we report ruthenium(II)-catalyzed redox-neutral [4 + 1] annulation of benzamides and propargyl alcohols, in which propargyl alcohols act as one-carbon units. This synthetic utility of propargyl alcohols led to a series of potentially bioactive N-substituted quaternary isoindolinones with moderate to high yields under mild conditions. Without the requirement for an external metal oxidant, this title transformation is compatible with various functional groups, which further underscores its synthetic utility and versatile applicability. In addition, preliminary mechanism experiments have been conducted and a plausible mechanism is proposed.

TL;DR: A facile and inexpensive chemical-acid-etching approach has been developed to activate the carbon cloth as an electrode for supercapacitor, which exhibited outstanding mechanical flexibility and the capacity remained nearly unchanged after 1000 bending cycles.
Abstract: Carbon materials display appealing physical, chemical, and mechanical properties and have been extensively studied as supercapacitor electrodes. The surface engineering further allows us to tune their capability of adsorption/desorption and catalysis. Therefore, a facile and inexpensive chemical-acid-etching approach has been developed to activate the carbon cloth as an electrode for supercapacitor. The capacitance of the acid-etched carbon cloth electrode can approach 5310 mF cm-2 at a current density of 5 mA cm-2 with remarkable recycling stability. The all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor delivered a high energy density of 4.27 mWh cm-3 at a power density of 1.32 W cm-3. Furthermore, this symmetric supercapacitor exhibited outstanding mechanical flexibility, and the capacity remained nearly unchanged after 1000 bending cycles.

TL;DR: A reversible Zn//(Na,Mn)V8O20·nH2O system is reported, which exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance and is ascribed to the Mn2+/Mn3+‐ induced high electrical conductivity and Na+‐induced fast migration of Zn2+.
Abstract: Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) show promise for use in energy storage. However, the development of ZIBs has been plagued by the limited cathode candidates, which usually show low capacity or poor cycling performance. Here, a reversible Zn//(Na,Mn)V8O20·nH2O system is reported, the introduction of manganese (Mn) ions in NaV8O20 to form (Na,Mn)V8O20 exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance with a capacity of 377 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1. Through experimental and theoretical results, it is discovered that the outstanding performance of (Na,Mn)V8O20·nH2O is ascribed to the Mn2+/Mn3+-induced high electrical conductivity and Na+-induced fast migration of Zn2+. Other cathode materials derived from (Na,Mn)V8O20·nH2O by substituting Mn with Fe, Co, Ni, Ca, and K are explored to confirm the unique advantages of transition metal ions. With an increase in Mn content in NaV8O20, (Na0.33,Mn0.65)V8O20 ·nH2O can deliver a reversible capacity of 150 mA h g-1 and a capacity retention of 99% after 1000 cycles, which may open new opportunities for the development of high-performance aqueous ZIBs.

TL;DR: This in situ polymeric encapsulation approach allows for the careful tuning of the thickness of graphite-like carbon, and it potentially constitutes a general and efficient route to prepare other oxide@C catalysts, which can therefore largely expand the applications of nanomaterials in catalysis.
Abstract: Nanocomposites composed of TiO2 and carbon materials (C) are widely popular photocatalysts because they combine the advantages of TiO2 (good UV photocatalytic activity, low cost, and stability) to the enhanced charge carrier separation and lower charge transfer resistance brought by carbon. However, the presence of carbon can also be detrimental to the photocatalytic performance as it can block the passage of light and prevent the reactant from accessing the TiO2 surface. Here using a novel interfacial in situ polymer encapsulation–graphitization method, where a glucose-containing polymer was grown directly on the surface of the TiO2, we have prepared uniform TiO2@C core–shell structures. The thickness of the carbon shell can be precisely and easily tuned between 0.5 and 8 nm by simply programming the polymer growth on TiO2. The resulting core@shell TiO2@C nanostructures are not black and they possess the highest activity for the photodegradation of organic compounds when the carbon shell thickness is 1–2...

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This Review describes how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics.
Abstract: Ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are fundamentally and technologically intriguing. In contrast to the graphene sheet, they are chemically versatile. Mono- or few-layered TMDs - obtained either through exfoliation of bulk materials or bottom-up syntheses - are direct-gap semiconductors whose bandgap energy, as well as carrier type (n- or p-type), varies between compounds depending on their composition, structure and dimensionality. In this Review, we describe how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications. They have been investigated as chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and hydrosulfurization, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics. Their morphologies and properties are also useful for energy storage applications such as electrodes for Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
