TL;DR: The whole genome of M. fulvus HW-1 will enable us to further investigate the details of its evolution and exhibit complex social behaviors in the presence of low concentrations of seawater.
Abstract: Myxococcus fulvus HW-1 (ATCC BAA-855) is a halotolerant marine myxobacterium. This strain exhibits complex social behaviors in the presence of low concentrations of seawater but adopts an asocial living pattern under oceanic conditions. The whole genome of M. fulvus HW-1 will enable us to further investigate the details of its evolution.

TL;DR: A strain of Pseudomonasputida ZWL73 was isolated from soil contaminated with chloronitrobenzenes and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, and the phylogenetic analysis suggested that 2A5CPDO may form a new subgroup in class III meta-cleavage dioxygenase with its close homologs.
Abstract: A strain of Pseudomonas putida ZWL73 was isolated from soil contaminated with chloronitrobenzenes and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing. This bacterium released chloride and ammonia into the medium when grown on 4-chloronitrobenzene (4CNB) as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. A plasmid designated pZWL73 of approximately 100 kb in this strain was found to be responsible for 4CNB degradation. This was based on the fact that the plasmid-cured strains showed 4CNB- phenotype and the 4CNB+ phenotype could be conjugally transferred. The cell-free extracts of strain ZWL73 exhibited chloronitrobenzene nitroreductase and 2-amino-5-chlorophenol 1, 6-dioxygenase (2A5CPDO) activities, but neither activity was found from that of the plasmid-cured strain. We have also cloned a 4.9-kb EcoRI fragment exhibiting 2A5CPDO activity. Sequencing results revealed beta-subunit (cnbCa) and alpha subunit (cnbCb) of a meta-cleavage dioxygenase, which were subsequently expressed in E. coli with 2A5CPDO activity. The phylogenetic analysis suggested that 2A5CPDO may form a new subgroup in class III meta-cleavage dioxygenase with its close homologs.

TL;DR: In this article, a 3D hierarchical hierarchical heterostructured photoanode was synthesized via a facile approach with a metal-assisted chemical etching step following an in situ hydrothermal synthesis process.
Abstract: Constructing a high performance three-dimensional (3D) semiconductor photoelectrode for photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production by water splitting is a promising method to resolve the current energy and environmental issues. Here, a ultrafine Si nanowires/Sn3O4 nanosheet (SiNWs/Sn3O4) 3D hierarchical heterostructured photoanode was synthesized via a facile approach with a metal-assisted chemical etching step following an in situ hydrothermal synthesis process. The ultrafine SiNWs/Sn3O4 3D hierarchical heterostructured photoanode exhibits significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical activity, and its photocurrent density is 8 times higher than that of single phase structures of SiNWs. This increase of catalytic activity may be attributed to the enhancement of the full-spectrum light absorption, decrease of the photocarrier recombination rate and a low transmission resistance at the catalyst/electrolyte interface. This work provides a novel design for preparing highly efficient Si based 3D heterostructured catalysts for the production of clean energy.

TL;DR: A novel series of pyrimidin-2-amino-pyrazol hydroxamate derivatives as JAK and HDAC dual inhibitors was designed, synthesized, and evaluated, among which 8m possessed potent and balanced activities against both JAK2 andHDAC6 with half-maximal inhibitory concentration at the nanomolar level.
Abstract: Concurrent inhibition of Janus kinase (JAK) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) could potentially improve the efficacy of the HDAC inhibitors in the treatment of cancers and resolve the problem of HDAC inhibitor resistance in some tumors. Here, a novel series of pyrimidin-2-amino-pyrazol hydroxamate derivatives as JAK and HDAC dual inhibitors was designed, synthesized, and evaluated, among which 8m possessed potent and balanced activities against both JAK2 and HDAC6 with half-maximal inhibitory concentration at the nanomolar level. 8m exhibited improved antiproliferative and proapoptotic activities over SAHA and ruxolitinib in several hematological cell lines. Remarkably, 8m exhibited more potent antiproliferation effect than the combination of SAHA and ruxolitinib in HEL cells bearing JAK2V617F mutation. Pharmacokinetic studies in mice showed that 8m possessed good bioavailability after intraperitoneal administration. Finally, 8m showed antitumor efficacy with no significant toxicity in a HEL xenograft model....

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This Review describes how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics.
Abstract: Ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are fundamentally and technologically intriguing. In contrast to the graphene sheet, they are chemically versatile. Mono- or few-layered TMDs - obtained either through exfoliation of bulk materials or bottom-up syntheses - are direct-gap semiconductors whose bandgap energy, as well as carrier type (n- or p-type), varies between compounds depending on their composition, structure and dimensionality. In this Review, we describe how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications. They have been investigated as chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and hydrosulfurization, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics. Their morphologies and properties are also useful for energy storage applications such as electrodes for Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
