Abstract: We report a quantitative analytical method using the naked eye. The method is based on the coffee-ring effect on paper, which converts a colored solution to stains on the paper. It is found that the width of the colored stains is correlated to the concentration of analyte so that quantitative analysis can be accomplished using a ruler. The influence of the shape and lamination of the paper reservoir to the test results is studied to find the optimal one for unambiguous analysis. It is also found that the sample color does not cause interference to the test. The applicability of the method to quantitative chemical analysis is demonstrated by detection of glucose and lactate.

TL;DR: In this paper, BaNbO3 nanocubes have been synthesized for the first time by using the composite-hydroxide-mediated method by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and TEM.
Abstract: Perovskite niobate (BaNbO3) nanocubes have been synthesized for the first time by using the composite-hydroxide-mediated method. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Humidity sensors based on BaNbO3 nanocubes were fabricated. The responsiveness to humidity for static and dynamic testing proved the ultrasensitive properties of the sensors. The resistance changed from 932.4 MΩ to 2.2 MΩ as the relative humidity (RH) increases from 10% to 80%. The response-time and recovery-time of the resistance is 12 s and 32 s versus the changes of relative humidity from 20% to 60%. These results indicate promising applications of BaNbO3 nanocubes in a highly sensitive environmental monitoring and humidity controlled electronic device.

TL;DR: A practical, enantio- and diastereoselective Mannich reaction between a chiral Ni(II) complex of glycine 1 and alpha-amino sulfones 2, involving the creation of a carbon-carbon bond and two stereogenic centers in a single operation, represents an attractive route to the synthesis alpha,beta-diamino acids.
Abstract: This paper describes a practical, enantio- and diastereoselective Mannich reaction between a chiral Ni(II) complex of glycine 1 and alpha-amino sulfones 2, involving the creation of a carbon-carbon bond and two stereogenic centers in a single operation; it represents an attractive route to the synthesis alpha,beta-diamino acids.

Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This Review describes how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics.
Abstract: Ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are fundamentally and technologically intriguing. In contrast to the graphene sheet, they are chemically versatile. Mono- or few-layered TMDs - obtained either through exfoliation of bulk materials or bottom-up syntheses - are direct-gap semiconductors whose bandgap energy, as well as carrier type (n- or p-type), varies between compounds depending on their composition, structure and dimensionality. In this Review, we describe how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications. They have been investigated as chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and hydrosulfurization, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics. Their morphologies and properties are also useful for energy storage applications such as electrodes for Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
