This paper presents a review of the state of the art of the design methodologies for Hardware (HW) and Software (SW) for design of the digital control system in power electronic converters. This paper presents also a review of programmable electronic devices used in applications including power converters: Microcontroller (μC), Digital Signal Controllers (DSC), Digital Signal Processors (DSP) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This paper presents relevant concepts for electronic power converters developers. However, concepts and information presented can also be used in other applications that require the design of embedded systems. Finally, this paper also presents the case study of the development of the control system of a three-phase inverter, using the system-level design methodology.

Design methodologies and programmable devices used in power electronic converters — A survey

This paper introduces development of a small scale microgrid which consists of a PV system, an energy storage device, and a load. The system is intended for conducting experiments to demonstrate and/or investigate different design and control issues related to microgrids. The system has also a data acquisition and power management component in order to facilitate monitoring and management of the system in different operating conditions. Hence, the system can be used for both education and research purposes. Two experiments have been provided to illustrate the flexibility of the proposed microgrid.

An experimental microgrid for laboratory activities

For the latest development in the direction of embedded system and wireless network, this project work describes wireless image transmission based on the embedded system. The Project Work Includes Following Features of Image Transmission using WIFI from S3C2440A to PC, S3C2440A is the h/w, with QTOPIA OS, PC with LINUX(Ubuntu) and with Socket code being in C/C++ language. Here S3C2440A will be working as Server and PC with Linux Platform(UBUNTU) will be working as Client. Experimental results show the throughput, transmission time and delay evaluation for various image file types along with speed gain using image compression.

Performance evaluation of wireless image transmission: An approach using embedded system

The article introduces the hardware and software design of a wireless video surveillance system based on S3C2440 hardware platform and embedded Linux operating system. It described the system's general structure, and gives the bootloader and the linux root file system is created, the kernel cutting, video image acquisition-driven and USB wireless adapter driver, etc. This system has the characters of the low cost, the system structure to be simple, the low power, the kernel can be cutting and transplantable, and also the stable property and high integration.

Design of Embedded Wireless Video Surveillance System Based on Internet

This paper introduces a high speed data acquisition system based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) . The aim is to develop a "distributed" data acquisition interface. The development of instruments such as personal computers and engineering workstations based on "standard" platforms is the motivation behind this effort. Using standard platforms as the controlling unit allows independence in hardware from a particular vendor and hardware platform. The distributed approach also has advantages from a functional point of view: acquisition resources become available to multiple instruments; the acquisition front-end can be physically remote from the rest of the instrument. High speed data acquisition system transmits data faster to a remote computer system through Ethernet interface. The data is acquired through 16 analog input channels. The input data commands are multiplexed and digitized and then the data is stored in 1K buffer for each input channel. Then the input data is filtered using FIR filters implemented using processor. The filtering is used to reduce the band width of the input data The main control unit in this design is the 16 bit processor implemented in the FPGA. This 16 bit processor is used to set up and initialize the data source and the Ethernet controller, as well as control the flow of data from the memory element to the NIC Using this processor we can initialize and control the different configuration registers in the Ethernet controller in a easy manner. Then these data packets are send to the remote PC through the Ethernet interface. The main advantages of the using FPGA as standard platform are its flexibility, low power consumption, short design duration, fast time to market, programmability and high density. The main advantages of using Ethernet controller AX88796 over others are its non PCI interface, the presence of embedded SRAM where transmit and reception buffers are located and high-performance SRAM-like interface. The paper introduces the implementation of the distributed data acquisition using FPGA by VHDL. The main advantages of this system are high accuracy, high speed, real time monitoring.

High Speed Data Acquisition System with Ethernet Interface

This paper introduces how to realize UART between acquisition and processing module based on DSP and data collection terminal module based on ARM. Then it takes the TMS320VC5402 DSP and S3C44B0X ARM for example, and designs hardware interface and procedures, the paper shows how to realize synchronization of asynchronous transfer for DSP and the communication between the two chips. After certification of the design the system, it can meet the real-time detection, also it can conveniently realize the communication between the system and PC to storage data, so it is with a good prospect.

Design of UART Based on ARM+DSP Distributed Data Acquisition System

BSP Development of WinCE System for Vehicle Navigation Device Based on S3C2440

The circuit of the signal acquisition module was designed and accomplished based on 24 high-precision A-E type serial A/D conversion chip ADS1258, employed Xilinx xc3s2000 FPGA as acquisition controller embedded in the chassis of N1 Compact-RIO, and host-programmed by Labview. The module achieved 16 Single-Ended input-channels with up to 23.7kHz (maximum) analog signal acquisition sampling rate. In addition to taking full advantage of ADS1258 on-chip function, the circuit contains single-ended-to-differential part, reference power, voltage isolation and other modules to ensure the accuracy and stability of the data acquisition.

Design of data acquisition module based on Compact-RIO

In this paper, a current predictive control for three-phase voltage source inverter development on Labview platform is presented and realized. It uses the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) module of NI company PAC (CompactRIO 9073) as the calculator to finish the model predictive algorithm. As the FPGA coprocessor can work in parallel structure, it finished the algorithm in nanosecond and output control signal immediately. Compared to normal predictive control using DSP coprocessor, this can realize deadbeat predictive well without any additional deadbeat compensation algorithm. By using Labview FPGA module platform, it became not difficult to program complex algorithm in FPGA.

Current predictive control for three-phase voltage source inverter based on Labview FPGA module

In order to set up a graphics platform which uses Linux as its kernel, this paper gives an instruction of transplanting GTK+ to the development platform. In this case, an ARM developing platform, using Intel XScale PXA255 as its internal core, is chosen. To enable GTK+ running on the platform, cross-complied is necessary and the relative equipment drivers are uploaded to the platform. GTK+ is based on X Window, however, in this paper, FrameBuffer is used instead.
