TL;DR: In this article, a voice-activated command interface module for interacting with a plurality of home-based electronic devices so as to allow for a remotely-located home owner to communicate with, command and control various ones of the electronic devices.
Abstract: A voice-activated command interface module for interacting with a plurality of home-based electronic devices so as to allow for a remotely-located home owner to communicate with, command and control various ones of the electronic devices. The module includes a plurality of communication ports, each communication port associated with a different type of communication interface for providing communications to and from the plurality of electronic devices. The module also includes a voice network communication port for receiving the voice commands from the home owner and a data network communication port for transmitting monitoring and control information between the plurality of electronic devices and the home owner. In operation, the command interface module is responsive to voice commands received from a remote user via an incoming telephone line (either data or voice). A voice recognition unit within the command interface module is utilized to translate the received voice signal into an “action/control” signal and then perform the desired activity.

TL;DR: In this article, an underground utility conveyance may be precisely located by impressing both a locating tone and a confirmation tone on the conveyance, which is an RF signal that produces a first field that radiates above the earth that is sensed by a first, above-ground signal detector.
Abstract: An underground utility conveyance (10) may be precisely located by impressing both a locating tone and a confirmation tone on the conveyance. The locating tone is an RF signal that produces a first field that radiates above the earth that is sensed by a first, above-ground signal detector (22) to establish the general location of the conveyance. The confirmation tone is a near-DC signal that produces a second, field having a relatively limited radiation path. A second detector (24) is inserted into the earth at successive places in the region where the conveyance is located to establish its precise location.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for calculating the engineered capacity of a packet network is described, and an alarm is triggered if the actual network usage reaches a predefined threshold of the engineered capacities.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for calculating the engineered capacity of a packet network is described. In one example, subscriber usage data is collected from the packet network. The engineered capacity is then updated using the usage data on a periodic basis. In another example, the engineered capacity is subsequently compared with the actual network usage. Afterwards, an alarm is triggered if the actual network usage reaches a predefined threshold of the engineered capacity.

TL;DR: A method and apparatus for detecting abnormal calling activity in a communications network is described in this article, where usage data associated with at least one phone number is obtained from the communications network.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting abnormal calling activity in a communications network is described. In one embodiment, usage data associated with at least one phone number is obtained from the communications network. The usage data is subsequently processed to determine if abnormal calling activity associated with the at least one phone number is exhibited.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system for wireless and network based mapping method and a system for supporting field personnel to access, select and download facilities related maps and related information is described.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for wireless and network based mapping method and system for supporting field personnel to access, select and download facilities related maps and related information. Mapping files are manipulated in accordance with a grid block overlay over a first level map display. Each of the grid blocks is uniquely identifiable and indexed with one or more algorithms necessary for the local creation of an enhanced and/or enlarged second level of display.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a system for monitoring a variety of environmental and/or other conditions within a defined remotely located region by using a plurality of wireless transmitters (614), each integrated into a sensor (612) adapted to monitor a particular data input.
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a system for monitoring a variety of environmental and/or other conditions within a defined remotely located region. In one aspect, a system is configured to monitor utility meters (613) in a defined area. The system is implemented by using a plurality of wireless transmitters (614), each integrated into a sensor (612) adapted to monitor a particular data input. The system also includes a plurality of transceivers (221) that are dispersed throughout the region at defined locations. The system uses a local gateway (210) to translate and transfer information from the transmitters to a dedicated computer (260) on a network (230). The dedicated computer collects, compiles and stores the data for retrieval upon client demand across the network. The computer further includes means for evaluating the received information and identifying an appropriate control signal to be applied at a designated actuator.

TL;DR: In this article, an intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions.
Abstract: An intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions. The system can be implemented using any of a number of different platforms, such as the web, email, smartphone, and the like, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the system is based on sets of interrelated domains and tasks, and employs additional functionally powered by external services with which the system can interact.

TL;DR: A location reporting paging communication system comprising space satellites, ground stations and a remote receiving unit adapted to resolve a global position from signals transmitted from a communication transmitter is described in this paper.
Abstract: A location reporting paging communication system comprising space satellites, ground stations and a remote receiving unit adapted to resolve a global position from signals transmitted from a communication transmitter. The subscriber in possession of the remote receiving unit updates the paging network with global positioning information. A caller paging a subscriber in possession of the remote receiving unit may request the global location of the remote receiving unit. The paging network could divulge or block such information from a caller depending on the requirements of the subscriber.

TL;DR: In this article, an intelligent gateway device is provided at a premise (home or business) for providing and managing application services associated with use and support of a plurality of digital endpoint devices associated with the premises.
Abstract: An intelligent gateway device provided at a premise (home or business) for providing and managing application services associated with use and support of a plurality of digital endpoint devices associated with the premises. The device includes a communications and processing infrastructure integrated with a peer and presence messaging based communications protocol for enabling communications between the device and an external support network and between the device and connected digital endpoint devices. A services framework at the gateway device implements the communications and processing infrastructure for enabling service management, service configuration, and authentication of user of services at the intelligent gateway. The framework provides a storage and execution environment for supporting and executing received service logic modules relating to use, management, and support of the digital endpoint devices. Thus, the gateway device provides a network-based services point of presence for a plurality of digital endpoint devices at the premises.
