TL;DR: In this article, a new strategy for voltage balancing of distinct dc buses in cascaded H-bridge rectifiers is presented, which can be used for an arbitrary number of series H-bridges, different voltage levels, and different power levels in unidirectional or bidirectional rectifiers.
Abstract: In this paper, a new strategy for voltage balancing of distinct dc buses in cascaded H-bridge rectifiers is presented. This method ensures that the dc bus capacitor voltages converge to the reference value, even when the loads attached to them are extracting different amounts of power. The proposed method can be used for an arbitrary number of series H-bridges, different voltage levels, and different power levels in unidirectional or bidirectional rectifiers. To reduce the current harmonics and distortion, the input current is programmed to be sinusoidal and in phase with the input voltage; however, it is possible to adjust the input power factor to control both the active and reactive powers. In the proposed approach, both the low frequency (stepped modulation) and high frequency [pulse-width modulation (PWM)] switching methods are utilized to improve the performance of the rectifier. Using theoretical analysis, the acceptable load power limits for a rectifier with N-H-bridge cells are derived. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a generalized switching technique for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters is proposed, which employs low-frequency switching for voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors, and the high-frequency sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation switching for shaping the input ac current.
Abstract: In this paper, a generalized switching technique for cascaded H -bridge (CHB) converters is proposed. To take advantage of both low- and high-frequency modulation techniques, a hybrid modulation method is utilized. The proposed technique employs the low-frequency switching for voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors, and the high-frequency sinusoidal pulse-width modulation switching for shaping the input ac current. Using the proposed technique, the stable operating region of CHB converters is extended. The proposed technique is capable of maintaining the dc voltages balanced even under critical operating conditions in which the load of one H-bridge cell is removed. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by several simulation and experimental tests on a seven-level CHB rectifier.

TL;DR: A new method for MPPT of PV arrays under both PSCs and uniform conditions is proposed by analyzing the solar irradiance pattern and using the popular Hill Climbing method, and the accuracy of the proposed method is proved using experimental results.
Abstract: The power–voltage characteristic of photovoltaic (PV) arrays displays multiple local maximum power points when all the modules do not receive uniform solar irradiance, i.e., under partial shading conditions (PSCs). Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods are shown to be effective under uniform solar irradiance conditions. However, they may fail to track the global peak under PSCs. This paper proposes a new method for MPPT of PV arrays under both PSCs and uniform conditions. By analyzing the solar irradiance pattern and using the popular Hill Climbing method, the proposed method tracks all local maximum power points. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. Besides, the accuracy of the proposed method is proved using experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the power density characteristics of ultracapacitors and batteries with respect to the same charge/discharge efficiency, and showed that the battery can achieve energy densities of 10 Wh/kg or higher with a power density of 1.2 kW/kg.
Abstract: The science and technology of ultracapacitors are reviewed for a number of electrode materials, including carbon, mixed metal oxides, and conducting polymers. More work has been done using microporous carbons than with the other materials and most of the commercially available devices use carbon electrodes and an organic electrolytes. The energy density of these devices is 3¯5 Wh/kg with a power density of 300¯500 W/kg for high efficiency (90¯95%) charge/discharges. Projections of future developments using carbon indicate that energy densities of 10 Wh/kg or higher are likely with power densities of 1¯2 kW/kg. A key problem in the fabrication of these advanced devices is the bonding of the thin electrodes to a current collector such the contact resistance is less than 0.1 cm2. Special attention is given in the paper to comparing the power density characteristics of ultracapacitors and batteries. The comparisons should be made at the same charge/discharge efficiency.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multilevel commutation cell is introduced for high-voltage power conversion, which can be applied to either choppers or voltage-source inverters and generalized to any number of switches.
Abstract: The authors discuss high-voltage power conversion. Conventional series connection and three-level voltage source inverter techniques are reviewed and compared. A novel versatile multilevel commutation cell is introduced: it is shown that this topology is safer and more simple to control, and delivers purer output waveforms. The authors show how this technique can be applied to either choppers or voltage-source inverters and generalized to any number of switches.<>

TL;DR: A simple and low-computational-cost modulation technique for multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters based on geometrical considerations considering a unidimensional control region to determine the switching sequence and the corresponding switching times is presented.
Abstract: Multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters have found industrial application in the medium-voltage high-power range. In this paper, a generalized modulation technique for this type of converter based on a multidimensional control region is presented. Using the multidimensional control region, it is shown that all previous modulation techniques are particularized versions of the proposed method. Several possible solutions to develop a specific implementation of the modulation method are addressed in order to show the potential possibilities and the flexibility of the proposed technique. In addition, a feedforward version of this technique is also introduced to determine the switching sequence and the switching times, avoiding low harmonic distortion with unbalanced dc voltages. Experimental results are shown in order to validate the proposed concepts.
