TL;DR: In this paper, nanoporous gold (NPG) made by dealloying Au−Ag is investigated as a novel electrode material for methanol electro-oxidation, but the structure quickly coarsens upon long time potential cycling.
Abstract: Dealloying single phase alloys is known to generate a type of nanostructured porous metals with intriguing properties. In this study, nanoporous gold (NPG) made by dealloying Au−Ag is investigated as a novel electrode material for methanol electro-oxidation. Compared to bulk Au electrode, oxidation and subsequent reduction of NPG occur at significantly negative potentials in both acid and alkaline solutions. NPG shows great catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation, but the structure quickly coarsens upon long time potential cycling. Interestingly, after surface modification with only a tiny amount of platinum, NPG exhibits greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward methanol oxidation in the alkaline solutions, which is exemplified by a broad and high anodic peak during the positive scan and two secondary oxidation peaks in the subsequent reverse scan. At the same time, SEM observation and long-time potential cycling both prove that Pt−NPG has much enhanced structure stability as compared w...

TL;DR: Spherical silver and gold nanoparticles with narrow size distributions were conveniently synthesized in aqueous solution by a novel electrochemical method using Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as an ideal stabilizer for the metallic nanoclusters and the use of a rotating platinum cathode.
Abstract: Spherical silver and gold nanoparticles with narrow size distributions were conveniently synthesized in aqueous solution by a novel electrochemical method. The technological keys to the electrochemical synthesis of monodispersed metallic nanoparticles lie in the choice of an ideal stabilizer for the metallic nanoclusters and the use of a rotating platinum cathode. Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was chosen as the stabilizer for the silver and gold clusters. PVP not only protects metallic particles from agglomeration, but also promotes metal nucleation, which tends to produce small metal particles. Using a rotating platinum cathode effectively solves the technological difficulty of rapidly transferring the (electrochemically synthesized) metallic nanoparticles from the cathode vicinity to the bulk solution, avoiding the occurrence of flocculates in the vicinity of the cathode, and ensuring the monodispersity of the particles. The particle size and particle size distribution of the silver and gold nanoparticles were improved by adding sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) to the electrolyte. The electrochemically synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by TEM and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

TL;DR: The topotactic fabrication of self-supported nanoporous cobalt phosphide nanowire arrays on carbon cloth via low-temperature phosphidation of the corresponding Co(OH)F/CC precursor offers excellent catalytic performance and durability under neutral and basic conditions.
Abstract: In this Communication, we report the topotactic fabrication of self-supported nanoporous cobalt phosphide nanowire arrays on carbon cloth (CoP/CC) via low-temperature phosphidation of the corresponding Co(OH)F/CC precursor. The CoP/CC, as a robust integrated 3D hydrogen-evolving cathode, shows a low onset overpotential of 38 mV and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec–1, and it maintains its catalytic activity for at least 80 000 s in acidic media. It needs overpotentials (η) of 67, 100, and 204 mV to attain current densities of 10, 20, and 100 mA cm–2, respectively. Additionally, this electrode offers excellent catalytic performance and durability under neutral and basic conditions.

TL;DR: A critical appraisal of different synthetic approaches to Cu and Cu-based nanoparticles and copper nanoparticles immobilized into or supported on various support materials (SiO2, magnetic support materials, etc.), along with their applications in catalysis.
Abstract: The applications of copper (Cu) and Cu-based nanoparticles, which are based on the earth-abundant and inexpensive copper metal, have generated a great deal of interest in recent years, especially in the field of catalysis. The possible modification of the chemical and physical properties of these nanoparticles using different synthetic strategies and conditions and/or via postsynthetic chemical treatments has been largely responsible for the rapid growth of interest in these nanomaterials and their applications in catalysis. In addition, the design and development of novel support and/or multimetallic systems (e.g., alloys, etc.) has also made significant contributions to the field. In this comprehensive review, we report different synthetic approaches to Cu and Cu-based nanoparticles (metallic copper, copper oxides, and hybrid copper nanostructures) and copper nanoparticles immobilized into or supported on various support materials (SiO2, magnetic support materials, etc.), along with their applications i...

TL;DR: The fundamentals of HER are summarized and the recent state-of-the-art advances in the low-cost and high-performance catalysts based on noble and non-noble metals, as well as metal-free HER electrocatalysts are reviewed.
Abstract: Hydrogen fuel is considered as the cleanest renewable resource and the primary alternative to fossil fuels for future energy supply. Sustainable hydrogen generation is the major prerequisite to realize future hydrogen economy. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as the vital step of water electrolysis to H2 production, has been the subject of extensive study over the past decades. In this comprehensive review, we first summarize the fundamentals of HER and review the recent state-of-the-art advances in the low-cost and high-performance catalysts based on noble and non-noble metals, as well as metal-free HER electrocatalysts. We systemically discuss the insights into the relationship among the catalytic activity, morphology, structure, composition, and synthetic method. Strategies for developing an effective catalyst, including increasing the intrinsic activity of active sites and/or increasing the number of active sites, are summarized and highlighted. Finally, the challenges, perspectives, and research directions of HER electrocatalysis are featured.
