TL;DR: A large-area, continuous, few-layer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin film has been fabricated on a Si/SiO(2) wafer using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method followed by thermal reduction, showing great potential for mass-production of graphene-based electronic biosensors.
Abstract: A large-area, continuous, few-layer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin film has been fabricated on a Si/SiO2 wafer using the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) method followed by thermal reduction. After photochemical reduction of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) on rGO, the obtained PtNPs/rGO composite is employed as the conductive channel in a solution-gated field effect transistor (FET), which is then used for real-time detection of hybridization of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) with high sensitivity (2.4 nM). Such a simple, but effective method for fabrication of rGO-based transistors shows great potential for mass-production of graphene-based electronic biosensors.

TL;DR: In this article, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are used as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to convert sustainable energy to clean energy carrier, H2.
Abstract: Hydrogen (H2) is one of the most important clean and renewable energy sources for future energy sustainability. Nowadays, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) from water splitting are considered as two of the most efficient methods to convert sustainable energy to the clean energy carrier, H2. Catalysts based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are recognized as greatly promising substitutes for noble-metal-based catalysts for HER. The photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities of TMD nanosheets for the HER can be further improved after hybridization with many kinds of nanomaterials, such as metals, oxides, sulfides, and carbon materials, through different methods including the in situ reduction method, the hot-injection method, the heating-up method, the hydro(solvo)thermal method, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and thermal annealing. Here, recent progress in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic HERs using 2D TMD-based composites as catalysts is discussed.

TL;DR: Hollow core-shell nanorods with a nanogap are designed and constructed with the assistance of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for energy storage applications as mentioned in this paper, where a thin sacrificial layer of Al2O3 is deposited by ALD and removed eventually, forming a Nanogap between the CoO core and the TiO2 shell.
Abstract: Hollow core–shell nanorods with a nanogap are designed and constructed with the assistance of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for energy storage applications. As a demonstration, CoO nanorods and NiO nanowalls are enclosed by a TiO2 nanotube shell, forming the “wire in tube” and “wall in box” structures, respectively. A thin sacrificial layer of Al2O3 is deposited by ALD and removed eventually, forming a nanogap between the CoO core (or the NiO nanowall) and the TiO2 shell. When they are tested as supercapacitor electrodes, an evident difference between the solid core–shell nanostructure and hollow ones can be found; for example, the hollow structure shows ∼2 to 4 times the capacitance compared to the solid wires. The electrochemical properties are also superior compared to the bare nanorods without the nanotube shell. The enhancement is ascribed to the conformal hollow design which provides enlarged specific surface areas and a shorter ion transport path. It is prospected that such a positive nanogap effect may also exist in other electrochemical cell electrodes such as lithium ion batteries and fuel cells.

TL;DR: The findings support the concept of conformation-specific, cross-reactive antibodies that may protect against amyloidogenic toxic peptides and stimulating the production of such neuroprotective antibodies or passively administering them to the elderly population may provide a preventive measure toward AD.
Abstract: A number of distinct β-amyloid (Aβ) variants or multimers have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and antibodies recognizing such peptides are in clinical trials. Humans have natural Aβ-specific antibodies, but their diversity, abundance, and function in the general population remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate with peptide microarrays the presence of natural antibodies against known toxic Aβ and amyloidogenic non-Aβ species in plasma samples and cerebrospinal fluid of AD patients and healthy controls aged 21–89 years. Antibody reactivity was most prominent against oligomeric assemblies of Aβ and pyroglutamate or oxidized residues, and IgGs specific for oligomeric preparations of Aβ1-42 in particular declined with age and advancing AD. Most individuals showed unexpected antibody reactivities against peptides unique to autosomal dominant forms of dementia (mutant Aβ, ABri, ADan) and IgGs isolated from plasma of AD patients or healthy controls protected primary neurons from Aβ toxicity. Aged vervets showed similar patterns of plasma IgG antibodies against amyloid peptides, and after immunization with Aβ the monkeys developed high titers not only against Aβ peptides but also against ABri and ADan peptides. Our findings support the concept of conformation-specific, cross-reactive antibodies that may protect against amyloidogenic toxic peptides. If a therapeutic benefit of Aβ antibodies can be confirmed in AD patients, stimulating the production of such neuroprotective antibodies or passively administering them to the elderly population may provide a preventive measure toward AD.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
