Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the scheduling of activities by consumers can be explicitly modeled in theoretically satisfactory and empirically productive way. Even in the case of urban work trips, probably one of the most tightly constrained of everyday activities, schedule shifting is found to be of quantitative importance for the understanding of urban transportation systems. Considerable effort will be required to assess fully the implications of this type of behavior for such important areas of transportation analysis as demand studies, value-of-time measurement, policy simulation, and cost-benefit analysis. Meanwhile, it seems likely that this approach can be applied productively to other goods subject to peak demands.

The scheduling of consumer activities: work trips

Some of the transport energy consumed during peak commuter periods is wasted through slow running in congested traffic. Strategies to increase average vehicle occupancy (and reduce vehicle counts and congestion) could be expected to be at the forefront of energy conservation policies. Casual carpooling (also called ‘slugging’) is a system of carpooling without pre-arrangement. It operates in three US cities, and has been suggested in New Zealand as a strategy for managing transportation challenges when oil prices rise. The State of Washington will pilot a formalized version of the system during 2010. The objective of the paper is to find out if casual carpooling saves energy, and if so how much. New models are developed for thinking about the issues and making estimates. Energy consumption by single occupant vehicles; casual carpool vehicles; and a mix of buses and single occupant vehicles; are estimated and compared. The paper concludes that energy could be saved by encouraging systems that emulate casual carpooling and suggests that policy should encourage development of carpooling without pre-arrangement as a mechanism for saving energy.

Are Shared Vehicles Shared by All? A Review of Equity and Vehicle Sharing:

This paper begins by providing an overview of bike share programs, followed by a critical examination of the growing body of literature on these programs. This synthesis of previous works, both peer-reviewed and grey, includes an identification of the current gaps in knowledge related to the impacts of bike sharing programs. This synthesis represents a critically needed evaluation of the current state of global bike share research, in order to better understand, and maximize the effectiveness of current and future programs.

Several consistent themes have emerged within the growing body of research on bike share programs. Firstly, the importance bike share members place on convenience and value for money appears paramount in their motivation to sign up and use these programs. Secondly, and somewhat counter intuitively, scheme members are more likely to own and use private bicycles than non-members. Thirdly, users demonstrate a greater reluctance to wear helmets than private bicycle riders and helmets have acted as a deterrent in jurisdictions in which helmets are mandatory. Finally, and perhaps most importantly from a sustainable transport perspective, the majority of scheme users are substituting from sustainable modes of transport rather than the car.

Travel behaviours, user characteristics, and social-economic impacts of shared transportation: a comprehensive review

To better understand dockless bike-sharing (DBS) usage and advance the knowledge on shared bicycle service, this study empirically investigated the riding behavior in the time and space dimensions based on multisource datasets. Taking Central Business District (CBD) and Beijing West Railway Station (BWRS) as study areas, this study analyzed and compared the DBS usage based on the traffic grid between the two study areas. Furthermore, the random forest (RF) model was applied to investigate the contribution of influencing factors on origin/ destination and origin–destination pair trip volume. Partial Dependence Plots (PDP) analysis was conducted to explore the nonlinear effects of influencing factors. Results show considerable variation across different scenarios. Variables such as government agencies, restaurants, bus stop distance, and metro distance show nonlinear and threshold effects on DBS usage. The findings offer valuable insights for urban infrastructure development and bike rebalancing strategies, and the formulation of green and sustainable transportation policies. 

Nonlinear effects of factors on dockless bike-sharing usage considering grid-based spatiotemporal heterogeneity

Severe traffic congestion is now a common problem in major cities worldwide, causing huge economic, environmental, and social losses to overall welfare. Governments are now considering congestion charging as an effective way to manage congestion. However, since congestion charging has not yet been implemented widely, the public remains uncertain about it. Few scholars have explored public uncertainty about congestion charging. This paper examined how the public perceived uncertainty toward fairness and efficiency affects willingness to accept congestion charging. Through an experimental study of stated preference, this paper analyzes the influence of observable variables and unobserved latent variables on public acceptability and compares the results with a traditional discrete choice model. The results indicated that the public’s perceived uncertainty about congestion charging will have significant negative effect on acceptability and that the perception of fairness has an even larger effect. As for uncertainty about the effectiveness of congestion charging on alleviating congestion, the implementation efficiency of the government is the most significant. For uncertainty about fairness, whether charge collection and revenue allocation are reasonable is the most significant. These findings provide an empirical basis for reducing public uncertainty and increasing public acceptance of congestion charging.
