Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (3rd edition)

Daniel J. Klionsky, +2522 more
- 21 Jan 2016 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macro-autophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Resistin is secreted from macrophages in atheromas and promotes atherosclerosis.

TL;DR: Macrophages infiltrating atherosclerotic aneurysms secrete resistin, and resistin affects endothelial function and VSMC migration, and may contribute to atherogenesis by virtue of its effects on vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metformin-induced inhibition of the mitochondrial respiratory chain increases FGF21 expression via ATF4 activation

TL;DR: The results indicate that metformin induced expression of FGF21 through an ATF4-dependent mechanism by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration independently of AMPK, which might explain a portion of the beneficial metabolic effects of met formin.
Journal ArticleDOI

Role of autophagy in diabetes and mitochondria.

TL;DR: The results suggest that autophagy is necessary to maintain structure, mass, and function of β‐cells and that decline of autophagic activity may be involved in age‐associated reduction of glucose tolerance.
