TL;DR: In this paper, a search for the b (b) over bar decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed with the ATLAS experiment using the full dataset recorded at the LHC in Run 1.
Abstract: A search for the b (b) over bar decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed with the ATLAS experiment using the full dataset recorded at the LHC in Run 1. The integrated luminosities used are 4.7 and 20.3 fb(-1) from pp collisions at root s = 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The processes considered are associated (WIZ)H production, where W -> e nu/mu nu, Z -> ee/mu mu, and Z -> nu nu. The observed (expected) deviation from the backgroundonly hypothesis corresponds to a significance of 1.4 (2.6) standard deviations and the ratio of the measured signal yield to the Standard Model expectation is found to be mu = 0.52 +/- 0.32 (stat.) +/- 0.24 (syst.) for a Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV. The analysis procedure is validated by a measurement of the yield of (W/Z)Z production with Z -> b (b) over bar in the same final states as for the Higgs boson search, from which the ratio of the observed signal yield to the Standard Model expectation is found to be 0.74 +/- 0.09 (stat.) +/- 0.14 (syst.).

TL;DR: In this paper, the production of mesons containing strange quarks and both singly and doubly strange baryons were measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at the ALICE experiment at the LHC.
Abstract: The production of mesons containing strange quarks ($\Kzs$, $\phi$) and both singly and doubly strange baryons ($\rmLambda$, $\rmAlambda$, and $\Xis$) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 $\tev$ with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009. Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report yields ($ $) of $0.184 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.006 \syst$ for $\Kzs$ and $0.021 \pm 0.004 \stat \pm 0.003 \syst$ for $\phi$. For baryons, we find $ = 0.048 \pm 0.001 \stat \pm 0.004 \syst$ for $\rmLambda$, $0.047 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.005 \syst$ for $\rmAlambda$ and $0.0101 \pm 0.0020 \stat \pm 0.0009 \syst$ for $\Xis$. The results are also compared with predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher energies and heavy-ion collisions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of Ta addition on microstructure and shape memory behavior of a Ti-22-at.%Nb alloy was investigated in order to improve the shape memory and superelastic properties.
Abstract: Effect of Ta addition on microstructure and shape memory behavior of a Ti–22 at.%Nb alloy was investigated in order to improve the shape memory and superelastic properties. The mechanical properties and shape memory behavior of Ti–22 at.%Nb–(0–8 at.%)Ta alloys were investigated by tensile tests at various temperatures and thermal cycling tests under various constant stresses. The shape memory effect with the maximum recovery strain of 2.7% was observed at room temperature in the Ti–22Nb alloy. The martensitic transformation temperature of the Ti–22Nb alloy decreased by 30 K per 1 at.% addition of Ta. The superelastic strain increased with increasing Ta content. Almost perfect superelastic behavior was observed until 2% tensile strain in the Ti–22Nb–(6–8)Ta alloys. The apparent yield stress decreased with increasing Ta content reaching a minimum yield stress around 4 at.%, and then the yield stress increased by further addition of Ta. The critical stress for slip increased with increasing Ta content. A higher critical stress for slip and a lower stress for inducing martensitic transformation resulted in a larger shape recovery strain above 3.0% in the Ti–22Nb–(4–6)Ta alloys.

TL;DR: In this paper, a search for beam-related oscillations was conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using the LSND beam from the decay in flight, and the observed oscillation probability of $(2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0
Abstract: A search for ${\ensuremath{ u}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{ u}}_{e}$ oscillations has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using ${\ensuremath{ u}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ from ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decay in flight. An excess in the number of beam-related events from the ${\ensuremath{ u}}_{e}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{C}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}X$ inclusive reaction is observed. The excess is too large to be explained by normal ${\ensuremath{ u}}_{e}$ contamination in the beam at a confidence level greater than 99%. If interpreted as an oscillation signal, the observed oscillation probability of $(2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ is consistent with the previously reported ${\overline{\ensuremath{ u}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{\ensuremath{ u}}}_{e}$ oscillation evidence from LSND.

Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
