Because of their high flexibility and durability, multilayer bellows are manufactured for use in commercial vehicles, while single-layer bellows are manufactured for use in passenger vehicles. A study based on the finite element method (FEM) and shape optimization for the single-layer bellows has been actively performed; however, until now, a study based on the FEM has rarely been performed for the multilayer bellows with gaps between the layers. This paper presents a finite-element modeling scheme for the multilayer bellows to improve simulation reliability during the evaluation of stress and flexibility. For performing shape optimization for the multilayer bellows, DOE (design of experiment) and the Kriging metamodel followed by the D-optimal method are used.

A Study on the Optimal Shape Design of Front Axle of Wheel Loader using the Design of Experiments

: Expansion joint has been utilized in many areas including automotive bellows for exhaust system. Usage of expansion joint has been increased due to its inherent flexibility and excellent anti-vibration property. Simple shape of expansion joint is modeled to understand the behavior of joint system. 27 design cases using 3 design factors with 3 levels are constructed by design of experiment. Each case is simulated to find the most influential design factors. Response for this study, maximum stress in the expansion joint, has been used to determine main design factors of joint. Among the 3 design factors, factor B has affected greatly a response in the formation of optimum shape of joint. Also, interaction factor, A×B, has also showed its influence to the response of joint. This study showed that design of experiment combined with finite element analysis could be used in the design decision process effectively in the design of expansion joint. Study on Optimum Shape of Expansion Joint

Generally ferritic stainless steels are used for parts of exhaust system in commercial vehicle, because they have many advantages as low price and high corrosion resistant compared with austenitic stainless steels. Even though ferritic stainless steels have such various merits, austenitic stainless steels have been used to manufacture multi-layer bellows with complex geometry because of their high ductility. Recently, the mechanical properties of the ferritic stainless steels are getting improved and alternating austenitic stainless steel. In this paper, the possibility of mass production of multi-layer bellows made of ferritic stainless steel like MH1 and 443CT was studied. Tensile test, ridging test and corrosion test were carried out to observe material properties of STS304, MH1 and 443CT. Three types of prototype bellows were made using STS304, MH1 and 443CT stainless steels, and stiffness and fatigue tests were carried out to evaluate performance of the prototype bellows.

Effect of Stainless Steel Properties on Performance of

The mechanical properties of bellows, such as the extensibility and the strength can be changed depending on the shape. For the shipbuilding material, it is desirable that the fatigue life is long due to the elastic property and the reduction of thermal stress in piping system. Nowadays, the domestic production and design of bellows are based on the E.J.M.A. Code. Therefore, the design standard is in need because of much errors and lack of detailed analysis. In this study, it is attempted to find out the optimal shape of U-type bellows using the finite element analysis. The design factors, mountain height, length, thickness, and the number of convolutions are considered and the proper values are chosen for the simulation. The results shaw that as the number of convolutions reduces, the volume decreases while the stress increases. However, as the number of convolutions increases, the volume increases above the standard volume and the stress obviously increases. In addition, the effect of the thickness of bellows on the stress is very large. Both of the mass and stress are decreasing at a certain lower value region. Also, we investigated shape optimization with considering maximum stress distribution tendency.

Shape Optimization for Performance Improvement of ship's U-type Bellows

Bellows are mechanical components which prevent the damage of system by absorption of the vibration and the displacement of axle and radial direction. Thermal piping system is expanded by the fluid of the high temperature from the heat engine inside. At this time, bellows prevent the damage of the piping due to the thermal expansion. Recently, design of bellows is required to fit some other operational environments which are not suggested in the E.J.M.A code book. And it is difficult to produce and to maintain bellows of high temperature and high pressure bemuse of its complicated shape and this causes the manufacturing cost to rise. The objective of this study is to determine optimum shape of bellows which can endure in the high temperature and high pressure. The maximum stress has an effect on the fatigue life of bellows, therefore it needs to be minimized. This study attempts to find a shape which minimizes the stress occurring in the bellows by the design of experiment. The model used in this study is not presented in the E.J.M.A code book, therefore, from the result of design of experiment we find the factors which give effects on the characteristic value and we presents the recession model using the RSM, which can predict the characteristic values depending on the change of factor values.
