This article explores the carnal dimensions of existence through ethnographic research in a mixed martial arts club Mixed martial arts (MMA) is an emergent sport where competitors in a ring or cage utilize strikes (punches, kicks, elbows and knees) as well as submission techniques to defeat opponents Through data gathered from in-depth interviews with MMA practitioners and participant observation in an MMA club, I elucidate the social processes that are integral to the production of an MMA fighter habitus I examine how body techniques are learned and become attached to the identity of mixed martial arts fighters Using Crossley’s concept of reflexive body techniques, I examine how MMA fighters engage in body callusing through use of reflexive body techniques thereby allowing them to withstand the rigors of the sport

Habit(us), Body Techniques and Body Callusing: An Ethnography of Mixed Martial Arts:

"A salamandra e um anfibio com alto poder de regeneracao. O que esse experimento indica, portanto, e que “o ato de lancar a lingua e capturar o bichinho nao e um ato de apontar para um objeto externo, mas de fazer uma correlacao interna.” (HUMBERTO MATURANA).

Using a semiotic and hermeneutical approach, the present paper discusses various theoretical elements in the analysis of popular views of schistosomiasis. Based on field work conducted in the State of Bahia, the authors identify two main processes in the construction of meaning related to schistosomiasis and show that depending on the social context of experience the disease may have a primary or secondary meaning for the populations affected by it. The first level of meaning refers to bodily experiences and is shared intersubjectively, whereas the second type is built on the discourse of health professionals. In the latter case, the popular view of the illness is directly linked to discourses and actions previously established by health programs designed for the control of the disease.

This article inquires as to the meaning of nervoso(nerves) among poor, working-class women from Salvador, Brazil. Our aim is to understand nerves as an experience that emerges from the background of a life trajectory and that, in many significant ways, disrupts the taken-for-granted character of that trajectory. From a phenomenological-hermeneutical tradition, we explore the links between experience, embodiment and temporality and then discuss the relevance of this approach for the understanding of women’s nervoso. In order to do so we present the life histories of three middle-aged women who have been afflicted with nerves. The accounts describe significant ways in which culturally inherited possibilities - grounded in a lived context of class and gender - are recovered and come to pre-figure a certain future. As we argue throughout the article, it is only when we situate the experience of nervoso within the temporal frame of life that we can truly understand it - that is, grasp it as part of a movement ...

Temporality and Experience: On the Meaning of Nervoso in the Trajectory of Urban Working-Class Women in Northeast Brazil

E possivel observar hoje nas ciencias sociais um interesse crescente pela ontologia. Se boa parte da agenda classica da disciplina estava situada no campo da epistemologia, centrada na nocao de representacao; a agenda atual em grande medida se define por uma preocupacao em entender nao visoes de mundo, mas as realidades ou os mundos em que estamos imersos. Segundo Marres, a virada ontologica nesta disciplina compreende niveis distintos de reflexao. No primeiro nivel, ontologia se refere a explicitacao dos pressupostos metateoricos acerca de quais entidades constituem a realidade e quais sao as relacoes entre elas. Em outro nivel se situam os autores cuja abordagem e rotulada por Marres de ontologia empirica, ou seja, que a pensam como fenomeno empirico ou acontecimento. Procura-se explorar neste nivel as associacoes por meio das quais diferentes entidades vem a ser no mundo e a propria realidade e vista como multipla e fluida. A proposta deste artigo e discutir mais detidamente este segundo nivel da ontologia, em especial a nocao de ontologia multipla formulada por Mol, explicitando sua compreensao das consequencias politicas desta abordagem.
