The idea of a global village, the aspiration of man at this jet age, is aided not only by the Internet, but also more seriously by other types of media. Thus, man, through the media, can get what language form, fashion, music etc are in vogue. In little or no time through our listening to the radio set or watching the television set, we could get to do what others are doing. The media, therefore, become a fast means through which we could get anything promoted. The objective of this paper is to examine the role of the media in the development or otherwise of Nigerian languages. We trace such contributions to the developmental stage the country, at present, finds herself. Development in this study covers a number of concepts, which range from education, social, cultural, to indigenous linguistic maturity. For the study therefore, we examine the radio and television programmes of two media houses each from inception to date. We see how these organisations have consciously or otherwise promoted or chocked the language and consequently culture, through their programmes. We link such positions to the people’s mental and social developments. The study is anchored on Gerhard Leitner’s The Sociolinguistics of Communication Media. Geshard Leitner based his work on address media in the context of the communication dominion. He reveals what performance is, what parameters are that determine its norms. He equally looks at the functions the media aims to fulfill in the society.

Nigerian Media, Indigenous Languagesand Sustainable Development

The focus of this paper is based on the training of Librarians for Electronic Library Services in State University Libraries in Nigeria. It examined the attitudes of Librarians towards advanced technology. It also highlighted the benefits of training Librarians for electronic Libraries Services. In Pursuit of the focus of this paper, it examines the basic function of Electronic Library Services and some challenges that unit the implementation of Electronic Library in State Universities. Such challenges include lack of funds, negative attitude of librarians towards training, and low comfort level with the use of ICT facilities. Finally, among others, the paper recommends that librarians should be trained to allay the fears and anxiety about the use and application of ICT in their respective E-library Services.

This study discusses the role of librarian in the 21st century. Libraries are in a state of dilemma due to dramatic changes that information and communication technologies (ICTs) have brought to libraries. Libraries are faced with various challenges including insufficient funds, but the inability of librarians to acquire IT skills relevant to addressing 21st century library services could be seen as a more difficult challenge, because without these skills it will be difficult for today's librarians to render adequate services to their patrons. Therefore, it is important for librarians to recognize and proactively seek to acquire the ICT skills needed to deliver 21st century library services to their patrons. This means that librarians need to also recognize the need to continually update themselves to keep up with today's fast-paced IT changes so that they will be able to deliver what is expected of them in this new millennium.

The Role of Librarian in the Twenty-first Century

The expressions “self actualization,” “autonomy,” and “autonomous community” have now become descriptive staples of what various communities in Nigeria are struggling for, especially the ethnic minorities. Along with these are the words “crisis” (as in the Niger Delta region), “religious crisis,” “hostage taking,” and “kidnapping.” Whichever form it takes, a common denominator is the demarcation along the lines of ethnicity expressed in language dichotomy. Indeed the “we”/”us” versus “they”/“them” language has been repeatedly used by politicians and those seeking political recognition or power. This paper seeks to show by means of evidence from the linguistic field, that even as many Nigerians identify with their individual language groups and are willing to support it (sometimes even by violent or other unconstitutional means), the languages themselves are sick, and many are in the process of dying. It presents results of research in the field that gives an insight into just how endangered our indigenous languages are, including two of the so-called big three. It suggests that policy makers should pay more than lip-service to mother-tongue literacy, and that politicians should re-channel their energies to developing these languages instead of exploiting ethnic differences for selfish political ends. It advocates a re-focusing of the patrilineal zest in order to preserve, protect, and transform Nigerian languages, thus preserving these vital aspects of our cultural identity.

Promoting Indigenous Language in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges for the Library and Information Professionals

The paper focused on the expectations of library schools in the training and preparation of future librarians. The desk research and brainstorming with professional colleagues were combined as approach for eliciting the data for the study. The highlights of the paper include review of library and information science education, libraries and librarianship in developing countries; justification for preparing future librarians in developing countries for the digital environment, review of the status of library and information science education in selected countries. The various expectations of library schools in the digital environment identified includes inclusion of digital library courses in LIS education, restructuring and reviewing of courses offered in library schools, provision of functional and well-equipped practical laboratories and learning resources, intensive exchange programmes, recruitment of skilled and qualified staff in library schools and inclusion of stakeholders to harmonize curriculum used in training librarians in Africa. The challenges to preparation / training of future librarians were identified. The position of the paper is that library schools in developing countries should be repositioned to be able to produce graduates that are adequately equipped to function effectively in the digital environment.
