Indonesia's forests are globally known for their high species diversity but many regions remain little known and so are floristic compositions of many conservation areas. This study investigated the tree communities in the heath, peat swamp, dryland dipterocarp and seasonal peat swamp forests at the Muara Kendawangan Nature Reserve, West Kalimantan. We established a plot size of (50mx60 m) in each forest type, thus the total area sampled was 1.2 ha. We enumerated trees with stem diameter ≥7cm on dryland dipterocarp and swamp forests as well as individuals with stem diameter ≥2 cm in heath forest. In the plot of 1.2 ha, we recorded 1.416 trees, representing 87 spesies, 57 genera and 28 families. Floristically the entire sampled forets consisted of Schima wallichii-Shorea balangeran association and Baeckea frutescens-Rhodomyrtus tomentsa association. The Schima wallichii-Shorea balangeran association consists of Rhodamnia cinerea-Diospyros hermaphroditica subassociation, Baccaurea lanceolata-Calophyllum inophyllum subassociation and Syzygium fusticuliferum-Adinandra dumosa subassociation. The forest communities investigated along the habitat gradient have low species richness. Further intensive studies in the above forest types as well as in the other community types present in the Muara Kendawangan Nature Reserve are necessary to provide data for better management of the reserve.

Species Composition and Structure of Forests in the Muara Kendawangan Nature Reserve, West-Kalimantan, Indonesia

Environmental damage due to natural resource extraction, especially in watershed areas, seems to be of increasing concern and so far, from the aspect of aquatic and water resources, plankton is commonly used as an indicator of environmental damage. This study explores the distribution of microphyta as a parameter of environmental damage. The research was conducted in Pager watershed, Central Kalimantan and sampled at 2 (two) stations, namely station A (for the right side of the river) and station B (for the left side of the river). The study was conducted 13 sampling times, which began in the period 25 May 2019 ending until 9 November 2019. Laboratory analysis to identify the type and number of microphyta was carried out at the Palangka Raya University Laboratory. The results showed that the number of microphyta taxa at station A (right side of the river) was 12-13 species, more than station B (left side of the river). The number of microphyta taxa at Station B is 8 - 9 species, it is suspected that there is an influence from the gray water settlements around the left side, especially when the water level drops. The distribution characteristics of microphyta in the Pager river are as follows: large number of taxa/species, low abundance and low diversity index. River/peat water environments are vulnerable to change, especially human interference. This research shows the potential use of microphyta as an indicator of environmental damage.

The Siam orange (Citrus nobilis L.) has low economic value because of its sour taste and
unattractive appearance. However, processing the fruit into nectar can increase its value.
Nectar production requires the addition of sugar and the appropriate stabilizer for
consumer acceptance. This research aimed to study the ideal combination of sucrose and
stabilizer in Siam orange nectar production. A factorial completely randomized design
was employed with two factors, the concentration of sucrose (10%, 15%, and 20%) and
the type of stabilizer (CMC, carrageenan, pectin). As more sucrose was added to the juice,
the moisture content decreased and the volume of soluble solids increased. The type of
stabilizer only affected nectar pH and viscosity. CMC produced the highest nectar pH,
followed by carrageenan and pectin. However, based on the results of the analysis of all
parameters using the effectiveness index, carrageenan was the best stabilizer. Orange
nectar with 20% sucrose and 0.5% carrageenan contained 24.2% total soluble solids,
76.6% moisture content, 7.9% reducing sugar, 23.5% vitamin C, and 3.38% crude fibre,
with a viscosity of 109 cP and pH of 3.7. The product’s sensory characteristics were an
orange colour, a sweet, citrus aroma, and a slightly thick texture. Additional research on
the storage stability of this nectar formulation is necessary.

Siam orange (Citrus nobilis L.) nectar characteristics with variations in
stabilizer and sucrose level

The objective of the research was to know species composition and structure of ex-burned heath forest. Field research was carried out from 23 June to 5 July and 10 to 25 September 2004 on the foot-slope of Semujan Hill, Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan. Ten-sample units (SU) with each size 10 x 10 m are placed based on random sampling method. On each SU, trees with diameter i‚³ 2 cm cm were identified and the diameter (DBH) and height are recorded. Fourteen tree species were found within a 0.1 ha SU, consisting of 12 genus and 8 families. Tree density is exponentially decreased from trees with small diameter to trees with big diameter.Key words: species composition, forest structure, ex-burned heath forest, Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan.
