Abstract: This paper describes a study regarding the detection of silent visual reading and non reading mental activities through electroencephalogram (EEG) processing. Our work is in the context of human computer interaction research field, and we pretend to integrate EEG signals in applications to assist and analyze reading tasks. The need of users to be constantly and tightly coupled with the applications is being highly stimulated by the design of universally-accessible interactive system, where the use of biomedical signals has become an emerging area. The work focuses on building reliable capture and preprocessing procedures, extracting relevant features and testing simple learning algorithms. The detection process uses left hemisphere EEG signals, which is referred to as being the relevant brain area for this type of tasks. The signals were processed to extract the power spectrum density of delta, theta and alpha rhythms, known frequencies of this type of signals. We also present two real time demonstration applications,

TL;DR: The Life Á gueda project (LIFE16 ENV/PT/000411) as mentioned in this paper aims to remove hydromorphological pressures towards the reestablishment of conditions for a good ecological status, as required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and associated River Basin Management Plans.
Abstract: : Habitat loss and overfishing are the most significant threats to diadromous fish, most of them of high socioeconomic and conservationist importance, such as Alosa alosa , Alosa fallax , Petromyzon marinus and Anguilla anguilla . The main objective of the LIFE Á gueda project (LIFE16 ENV/PT/000411) is the removal of hydro-morphological pressures towards the reestablishment of conditions for a good ecological status, as required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and associated River Basin Management Plans. Actions to achieve the project’s objectives include the restoration of river morphology through the construction of nature-like fish passes, removal of river obstacles and re-naturalization of the riverbed. Aside from these interventions, the project also contemplates riparian habitat restoration, design and operation of a pilot translocation program directed to European eel juveniles, management of recreational and commercial fisheries, and stake-holders’ engagement, safeguarding compatibility of ecosystem uses. To reestablish longitudinal connectivity in rivers Agueda and Alfusqueiro, a total of five fish passes (two modular and temporary vertical-slot and three nature-like fish passes) will be installed in obstacles where current uses need to be secured and removal is not an option. Obsolete or illegally built obstacles are to be completely or partially removed, in a total of eight interventions in both rivers. By placing PIT antennas in the most upstream fishways planned to be built in both rivers, and by monitoring the movements of tagged fish from target species, the efficiency of these habitat restoration actions, and the reestablishment of longitudinal connectivity, will be assessed.

TL;DR: Electroencephalography (EEG) is used to directly determine how individual information processing varies with changes in RSVP display parameters, finding significant correlations between EEG and increasing Presentation Speeds and proposing how EEG can be used for dynamic selection of RSVP parameters.
Abstract: Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) has gained popularity as a method for presenting text on wearable devices with limited screen space. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how to calibrate RSVP display parameters, such as spatial alignments or presentation rates, to suit the reader's information processing ability at high presentation speeds. Existing methods rely on comprehension and subjective workload scores, which are influenced by the user's knowledge base and subjective perception. Here, we use electroencephalography (EEG) to directly determine how individual information processing varies with changes in RSVP display parameters. Eighteen participants read text excerpts with RSVP in a repeated-measures design that manipulated the Text Alignment and Presentation Speed of text representation. We evaluated how predictive EEG metrics were of gains in reading speed, subjective workload, and text comprehension. We found significant correlations between EEG and increasing Presentation Speeds and propose how EEG can be used for dynamic selection of RSVP parameters.

TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of earthen buildings from the Leiria region of Portugal is presented, and two of them are taken as case studies to study their construction specificities, main building pathology, and thus contribute to preserving the heritage of these buildings.
Abstract: In Portugal, rammed earth monolithic walls and adobe masonry were, for several centuries, important construction techniques for dwellings. The frequent unnecessary demolition of these buildings, mainly due to lack of information related to them, lack or inadequate maintenance interventions, and advanced state of degradation, has been leading to great cultural and material loss. To preserve this vernacular built heritage and all the technological knowledge related to it, it is fundamental to understand the constructive technologies. Several earthen buildings from Leiria region were mapped and inspected, and two of them were taken as case studies. This architectural survey allowed studying their construction specificities, main building pathology, and thus contributing to Leiria's vernacular earthen buildings efficient preservation and use.
