Abstract: Murine mast cell proliferation and maturation are regulated by two distinct cytokines, interleukin-3 (IL-3) and the c-kit ligand, stem cell factor (SCF). In this study using cells of the mouse mast cell line, MC/9, the effects of two immunosuppressants, FK506 and cyclosporin A (CsA), were investigated. Withdrawal of IL-3 from the culture medium resulted in loss of viability of MC/9 cells. The addition of SCF in the absence of IL-3 maintained MC/9 cell survival but no cell proliferation was detected. The combined addition of IL-3 and SCF to the culture medium resulted in a more marked MC/9 cell proliferation than the addition of IL-3 alone. FK506 and CsA inhibited the SCF-dependent, but not the IL-3 dependent, stimulatory effects on MC/9 cell proliferation/survival. Apoptotic changes were analyzed using fluorescent staining with acridine orange and DNA electrophoresis. FK506 and CsA inhibited the SCF-dependent rescue effect from apoptosis. Flow cytometry showed that FK506 and CsA did not affect IL-3 receptor expression. However, immunoblot and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analyses indicated that c-kit protein and c-kit mRNA transcripts were increased following the FK506 and CsA treatments in the presence of IL-3. In addition, MC/9 cells pretreated with FK506 or CsA showed an increased adhesiveness to NIH/3T3 cells that express membrane-bound SCF. Neither FK506 nor CsA affected c-kit tyrosine phosphorylation or MAP kinase nuclear translocation of MC/9 cells following SCF stimulation. These results indicate that FK506 and CsA, while inducing c-kit of MC/9 cells, selectively inhibit the SCF-dependent stimulatory effects on MC/9 cell proliferation/survival by a mechanism independent of, or at point(s) distal to, the c-kit-MAP kinase pathway.

SOLUTION: The DC-DC converter 100 comprises: an input conversion section 110, in which a plurality of input conversion circuits 111..., each having a switching element 112 and a coil 113 to boost an inputted DC voltage and output it by allowing the switching element 112 to carry out its switching operation, are connected in parallel; an output voltage detection section 120, which detects an output voltage of the input conversion section 110; and a duty ration control section 130, which, based on the output voltage detected by the output voltage detection section 120, controls the duty ratio of a plurality of the switching elements 112... of a plurality of the input conversion circuits 111... in a current discontinuous mode. Abstract: We investigated the effects of glucocorticoids on IL-3-dependent proliferation and c-kit expression of cells of the mouse mast cell line, MC/9. Glucocorticoids (dexamethasone, prednisolone, and hydrocortisone) inhibited IL-3-dependent MC/9 cell proliferation, whereas sex steroids (progesterone, beta-estradiol, and testosterone) had no effect. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that glucocorticoids reduced the expression of the IL-3 receptor on MC/9 cells. Immunoblot and Northern blot analyses indicated that glucocorticoids also reduced the expression of both c-kit protein and c-kit mRNA transcript. Furthermore, the adhesion of MC/9 cells to stem cell factor-expressing NIH/3T3 cells was reduced following glucocorticoid treatment. Our results indicate that glucocorticoids inhibit IL-3-dependent MC/9 mast cell proliferation, with an accompanying decrease in IL-3 receptor expression. Glucocorticoids also reduced c-kit expression on MC/9 cells resulting in a decreased adhesion to NIH/3T3 fibroblasts.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the total traffic volume generated at a network as a whole by a multi-location meeting in a multi-location meeting system, which disposes a plurality of units (MCU: multipoint control unit) for controlling the multi- location meeting in the network. SOLUTION: A MCU selection server 30 is installed on a network. The MCU selection server 30 comprises a means for receiving a MCU selection request from a terminal demanding a multi-location meeting prior to opening of the multi-location meeting, and for selecting a MCU that minimize traffic volume generated in a network by the multi-location meeting, based on information of location on the network for terminals slated to participate in the meeting, information of location on the network for selectable MCU 21, 22, and 23, and network topology, and for transmitting the address of the selected MC to the terminal issuing the MCU selection request in return.

Abstract: GH plays a pivotal role in regulating body growth and development, which is modulated by sex steroids. A close interplay between estrogen and GH leads to attainment of gender-specific body composition during puberty. The physiological basis of the interaction is not well understood. Most previous studies have focused on the effects of estrogen on GH secretion. There is also strong evidence that estrogen modulates GH action independent of secretion. Oral but not transdermal administration of estrogen impairs the metabolic action of GH in the liver, causing a fall in IGF-I production and fat oxidation. This results in a loss of lean tissue and a gain of body fat in postmenopausal women and an impairment of GH effect in hypopituitary women on GH replacement. The negative metabolic sequelae are potentially important because of the widespread use of oral estrogen and estrogen-related compounds. Estrogen affects GH action at the level of receptor expression and signaling. More recently, estrogen has been shown to inhibit Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling by GH via the induction of suppressor of cytokine signaling-2, a protein inhibitor for cytokine signaling. This represents a novel paradigm of steroid regulation of cytokine receptors and is likely to have significance for a diverse range of cytokine function.

Abstract: A system and method may be provided that allows users to store, retrieve, and manipulate on-demand media content and data stored on a remote server network in an on-demand media delivery system. More particularly, the system may allow a user to access his or her on-demand media account from user equipment in different locations as long as the current user equipment can communicate with a remote server that stores user-specific information. The system upon user selection may freeze the delivery of on-demand media at a particular point and allow the user to resume the media at a later time from some other network location in system. Users may upload personal images or files to an on-demand delivery server for later retrieval and display. Users may be permitted to assign access rights to the uploaded files.

Abstract: An advantage of some aspects of the invention is to provide a virtual image display apparatus in which occurrence of luminance spots is suppressed to improve efficiency of use of illumination light. In the virtual image display apparatus of the invention, an optical-directivity changing section forms a non-uniform distribution concerning the directivity of image lights GL emitted from an image display device. Therefore, even when an angle of a light beam emitted from the image display device and effectively captured into the eye EY of an observer is substantially different depending on a position of the image display device, it is possible to form the image lights GL having directivity corresponding to such an angle characteristic of light beam capturing. It is possible to suppress occurrence of luminance spots to improve efficiency of use of illumination light.

A user may use this application to view lists of program listings. The user may select a program listing of interest. The interactive television application may allow the user to set a reminder for the selected program at the scheduled broadcast time. This application may also allow the user to set a reminder for the selected program at a later time at which the program is not scheduled to be broadcast. The user may be provided with a reminder at this later time. In response, the user may direct the network-based or local personal video recorder to play back the program or may defer the reminder again. The interactive television application may collect information on program usage and popularity to determine how long to retain certain programming.

Abstract: A system and method for utilizing data stored in an EPG database for modifying advertisement information. In this way, a service provider and/or an advertiser can transmit a single advertisement to all the television stations regardless of their geographic location and other user specific information, and need not re-transmit the advertisement even if there is a change in the show's program description. When the advertisement is displayed, the correct updated information is retrieved from the EPG database and inserted into the advertisement. In one aspect, the present invention describes a method for modifying an advertisement in an EPG comprising the steps of: storing television schedule information in a first database; storing advertisement information in a second database; incorporating a portion of the television schedule information into a portion of the advertisement information to form a modified advertisement; and displaying the modified advertisement on a screen.
