Abstract: The objective of this research is to optimize the dyeing parameters for cotton fabric with natural dyestuff extracted from Dactylopius coccus. In order to obtain purple hue, the influence of dyeing process conditions i.e. dye bath pH, concentration of dyestuff, and the addition of electrolyte has been studied. Additionally, potassium aluminium sulfate dodecahydrate and iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate were used as mordants on cotton fabrics in order to obtain coloration of specific purple hue. Colorimetric data and fastness properties of the dyed samples have been analyzed. Results indicate that the dyeing parameters as well as pre-treatment has a significant influence on the obtained purple shades and fastness properties.

Abstract: Natural dyes are not harmful to the environment owing to their biodegradability. For dye application to textiles, salts are necessary as mordant or electrolytes and make an environmental impact. In this paper, the influence of cationization during mercerization to the dyeing of cotton fabric with natural dye from Dactylopius coccus was researched. For this purpose, bleached cotton fabric as well as fabric cationized with Rewin OS was pre-mordanted using iron(II) sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O) and dyed with natural cochineal dye with and without electrolyte addition. For the characterization of surface changes after cationization, an electrokinetic analysis on SurPASS was performed and compared to pre-mordanting. For determination of dye exhaustion, the analysis of dye solution was performed on a UV/VIS spectrophotometer Cary 50 Solascreen. Spectrophotometric analysis was performed using a Datacolor 850 spectrophotometer, measuring remission ”until tolerance” and the whiteness degree, color parameters, color depth (K/S), and colorfastness of dyed fabric were calculated. Levelness was determined by visual assessment. Cationized cotton fabrics showed better absorption and colorfastness. Pre-mordanting and cationization showed synergism. The electrolytes improved the process of dye absorption. However, when natural dyeing was performed on cotton fabric cationized during mercerization, similar chromacity, uniform color, and colorfastness were achieved with and without electrolyte, resulting in pure purple hue of cochineal. For achieving a violet hue, pre-mordanting with Fe-salt was needed. Therefore, salt can be reduced or even unnecessary, which makes this process of natural dyeing more environmentally friendly.

Abstract: In this study, microcapsules were prepared by solvent evaporation technique using ethyl cellulose component as wall and essential oil as core material. The synthesis of microcapsules was carried out using different oil masses. The analysis of the microcapsules was carried out using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and UV spectrophotometric analysis using absorption spectrophotometer. The obtained results confirm the regular spherical shape and size of the synthesized microcapsules. The qualitative and quantitative spectrophotometric analysis of the microencapsulated immortelle oil was measured at the wavelength of 265 nm. The calibration diagram was used to calculate the unknown concentrations of the microencapsulated oil. The obtained results confirm the application of the presented method as relevant for the possible determination of microencapsulated oil on textile materials.

Abstract: Environmental friendly products particularly natural dyes are going to be much popular around the globe due to their non-toxic and bio-degradable nature. The current study was planned to enhance the dyeability of walnut bark having juglone as a reddish-brown natural dye under ultrasonic radiation as an environment-friendly and green tool After conducting series of experiments, it has been found that wool (RW) and extract (RE) after ultrasonic treatment for 45 min, when dyed for 45 min at 55°C using an acidic bath of 3 pH has given good color strength on the wool fabric. To develop the new shades, sustainable and eco-label chemicals (Fe, Al, and tannic acid) and four bio-mordants such as Acacia bark, Turmeric, Henna, and Pomegranate were also applied at optimum conditions. It is studied that 3% of turmeric extract as pre-bio-mordant and 5% of Acacia extract as post-bio-mordant has given excellent color characteristics as compared to their synthetic. It is concluded that ultrasonic treatment being an eco-friendly tool has a great potential to improve the dyeability of natural reddish-brown dye from walnut bark and the inclusion of sustainable biosources as a color modifier has value-added the natural dyeing process with excellent color ratings.

Abstract: The review provides an overview of research findings on microencapsulation for functional textile coatings. Methods for the preparation of microcapsules in textiles include in situ and interfacial polymerization, simple and complex coacervation, molecular inclusion and solvent evaporation from emulsions. Binders play a crucial role in coating formulations. Acrylic and polyurethane binders are commonly used in textile finishing, while organic acids and catalysts can be used for chemical grafting as crosslinkers between microcapsules and cotton fibres. Most of the conventional coating processes can be used for microcapsule-containing coatings, provided that the properties of the microcapsules are appropriate. There are standardised test methods available to evaluate the characteristics and washfastness of coated textiles. Among the functional textiles, the field of environmentally friendly biodegradable textiles with microcapsules is still at an early stage of development. So far, some physicochemical and physical microencapsulation methods using natural polymers or biodegradable synthetic polymers have been applied to produce environmentally friendly antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory or fragranced textiles. Standardised test methods for evaluating the biodegradability of textile materials are available. The stability of biodegradable microcapsules and the durability of coatings during the use and care of textiles still present several challenges that offer many opportunities for further research.
