Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid Stimulation of an Oxidative Burst during Elicitation of Cultured Plant Cells: Role in Defense and Signal Transduction
TL;DR: The results suggest that H(2)O(2), implicated as a second messenger of hormone-stimulated metabolic changes in some animal cells, also plays an important role in inducing subsequent defense responses such as phytoalexin production.
Journal ArticleDOI
Methionine oxidation in human IgG2 Fc decreases binding affinities to protein A and FcRn
TL;DR: The results confirm previously published observations for IgG1 that two analogous solvent‐exposed methionine residues in IgG2, Met 252 and Met 428, oxidize more readily than the other methions, and shows that Protein A may serve as a convenient and inexpensive surrogate for FcRn binding measurements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Binding of amino acid side-chains to S1 cavities of serine proteinases
Wuyuan Lu,Izydor Apostol,M. A. Qasim,Nicholas Warne,Richard Wynn,Wen Lei Zhang,Stephen Anderson,Yi Wen Chiang,Eleanor Ogin,Irvin Rothberg,Kevin Ryan,Michael Laskowski +11 more
TL;DR: All 20 coded P1 variants of one such inhibitor, turkey ovomucoid third domain, are obtained by recombinant DNA technology and the Pearson pro duct moment correlations for all the 15 enzyme pairs were calculated, suggesting that these may serve as a quantitative description of the specificity of the enzymes at P1.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting the reactivity of proteins from their sequence alone: Kazal family of protein inhibitors of serine proteinases.
Stephen M. Lu,Wuyuan Lu,M. A. Qasim,Stephen Anderson,Izydor Apostol,Wojciech Ardelt,Theresa L. Bigler,Yi Wen Chiang,James R. Cook,Michael N.G. James,I. Kato,Clyde A. Kelly,William J. Kohr,Tomoko Komiyama,Tiao-Yin Lin,Michio Ogawa,Jacek Otlewski,Soon Jae Park,Sabiha Qasim,Michael Ranjbar,Misao Tashiro,Nicholas Warne,Harry Whatley,Anna Wieczorek,Maciej Wieczorek,Tadeusz Wilusz,Richard Wynn,Wenlei Zhang,Michael Laskowski +28 more
TL;DR: An additivity-based sequence to reactivity algorithm for the interaction of members of the Kazal family of protein inhibitors with six selected serine proteinases is described and is exceptionally fast so that all possible sequences can be predicted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incorporation of norvaline at leucine positions in recombinant human hemoglobin expressed in Escherichia coli.
Izydor Apostol,Joseph Levine,Julie Lippincott,Jeanette Leach,Edward Hess,Christopher B. Glascock,Michael J. Weickert,Richard S. Blackmore +7 more
TL;DR: It is reported here a novel finding that norvaline can be incorporated in place of leucine in recombinant human hemoglobin expressed in Escherichia coli, and it appears that substitution is distributed across both the β- and di-α-globins in purified recombinant hemoglobin.
