The dual-tree complex wavelet transform

A fractional delay filter is a device for bandlimited interpolation between samples. It finds applications in numerous fields of signal processing, including communications, array processing, speech processing, and music technology. We present a comprehensive review of FIR and allpass filter design techniques for bandlimited approximation of a fractional digital delay. Emphasis is on simple and efficient methods that are well suited for fast coefficient update or continuous control of the delay value. Various new approaches are proposed and several examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the methods. We also discuss the implementation complexity of the algorithms. We focus on four applications where fractional delay filters are needed: synchronization of digital modems, incommensurate sampling rate conversion, high-resolution pitch prediction, and sound synthesis of musical instruments.

Splitting the unit delay [FIR/all pass filters design]

We introduce a digital waveletlike transform, which is tailored specifically for representing seismic data. The transform provides a multiscale orthogonal basis with basis functions aligned along seismic events in the input data. It is defined with the help of the wavelet-lifting scheme combined with local plane-wave destruction. In the 1D case, the seislet transform is designed to follow locally sinusoidal components. In the 2D case, it is designed to follow local plane-wave components with smoothly variable slopes. If more than one component is present, the transform turns into an overcomplete representation or a tight frame. In these terms, the classic digital wavelet transform is simply a seislet transform for a zero frequency (in one dimension) or zero slope (in two dimensions). The main objective of the new transform is an effective seismic-data compression for designing efficient data-analysis algorithms. Traditional signal-processing tasks such as noise attenuation and trace interpolation become simply defined in the seislet domain. When applied in the offset direction on common-midpoint or common-image-point gathers, the seislet transform finds an additional application in optimal stacking of seismic records.

Several authors have demonstrated that significant improvements can be obtained in wavelet-based signal processing by utilizing a pair of wavelet transforms where the wavelets form a Hilbert transform pair. This paper describes design procedures, based on spectral factorization, for the design of pairs of dyadic wavelet bases where the two wavelets form an approximate Hilbert transform pair. Both orthogonal and biorthogonal FIR solutions are presented, as well as IIR solutions. In each case, the solution depends on an allpass filter having a flat delay response. The design procedure allows for an arbitrary number of vanishing wavelet moments to be specified. A Matlab program for the procedure is given, and examples are also given to illustrate the results.

The design of approximate Hilbert transform pairs of wavelet bases

This paper introduces the double-density dual-tree discrete wavelet transform (DWT), which is a DWT that combines the double-density DWT and the dual-tree DWT, each of which has its own characteristics and advantages. The transform corresponds to a new family of dyadic wavelet tight frames based on two scaling functions and four distinct wavelets. One pair of the four wavelets are designed to be offset from the other pair of wavelets so that the integer translates of one wavelet pair fall midway between the integer translates of the other pair. Simultaneously, one pair of wavelets are designed to be approximate Hilbert transforms of the other pair of wavelets so that two complex (approximately analytic) wavelets can be formed. Therefore, they can be used to implement complex and directional wavelet transforms. The paper develops a design procedure to obtain finite impulse response (FIR) filters that satisfy the numerous constraints imposed. This design procedure employs a fractional-delay allpass filter, spectral factorization, and filterbank completion. The solutions have vanishing moments, compact support, a high degree of smoothness, and are nearly shift-invariant.

The double-density dual-tree DWT

A well-known limitation of the recursive digital filter, when compared to the nonrecursive filter, is its incapability of having a strictly linear phase characteristic; thus it may only approximate a constant group delay. For the analog filters the choice of the maximally flat criterion leads to the use of the Bessel polynomials. Yet digital approximations of these continuous filter functions are inadequate to yield the true maximally flat delay approximation of the recursive filters. Our purpose is to provide for the problem at hand a solution obtained by a direct approximation procedure in the z plane. The denominator of the transfer function turns out to be a Gaussian hypergeometric function, more particularly connected with the Legendre functions. The stability of the filters is discussed and some numerical results in regard to the amplitude and phase responses as well as the pole loci are given.
