TL;DR: In this paper, the background of the vacuum switch is reviewed with a view to the development of an improved concept of its capabilities and limitations in power switching, and specific electric utility problems to which the vacuum switches currently seems to be applicable are proposed.
Abstract: The background of the vacuum switch is reviewed briefly with a view to the development of an improved concept of its capabilities and limitations in power switching. In addition, specific electric utility problems to which the vacuum switch currently seems to be applicable are proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of vacuum switching from a historical and technological standpoint is presented, which will facilitate a more general understanding of the important subject of this important subject, as well as the history of the field.
Abstract: The growing use of vacuum interruption devices by the power and control industries in the past decade has introduced these mechanisms to many people to whom the area of vacuum switching is somewhat new. It is felt that a review of vacuum switching from a historical and technological standpoint will facilitate a more general understanding of this important subject.

TL;DR: A history of the development of a successful, high-power vacuum interrupter is presented in this article, which covers two principal phases: (1) early engineering effort in the late 1920's and early 1930's to produce a commercial interrupters, and (2) a review of the research and engineering at the General Electric Company.
Abstract: A history of the development of a successful, high-power vacuum interrupteris presented. This covers two principal phases: (1) early engineering effort in the late 1920's and early 1930's to produce a commercial interrupter, and (2) a review of the research and engineering at the General Electric Company covering new technologies necessary for the development of the high-power vacuum interrupter. A short review of the literature is included.
