In order to determine the influence of noise sensitivity on sleep, subjective sleep quality, annoyance, and performance after nocturnal exposure to traffic noise, 12 women and 12 men (age range, 19-28 years) were observed during four consecutive nights over a three weeks period. After a habituation night, the participants were exposed with weekly permuted changes to air, rail and road traffic noise. Of the four nights, one was a quiet night (32 dBA), while three were noisy nights with exposure to equivalent noise levels of 39, 44, and 50 dBA in a permuted order. The traffic noise caused alterations of most of the physiological parameters, subjective evaluation of sleep, annoyance, and performance. Correlations were found between noise sensitivity and subjective sleep quality in terms of worsened restoration, decreased calmness, difficulty to fall asleep, and body movements. The results suggest that alterations of subjective evaluation of sleep were determined by physical parameters of the noise but modified by individual factors like noise sensitivity.

Die Umsetzung der DLR-Studie in einer Lärmmedizinischen Beurteilung für ein Nachtschutzkonzept

Zusammenfassung Im Beitrag1) wird das Konzept und die Methodik einer unter der Bezeichnung NORAH (Noise-Related Annoyance, Cognition, and Health) laufenden umfangreichen Studie zur Wirkung von Verkehrslarm (Flug-, Schienen- und Strasenverkehrslarm) vorgestellt. Die NORAH-Studie wurde anlasslich der Diskussionen um den Ausbau des Frankfurter Flug hafens von der Gemeinnutzigen Umwelthaus GmbH, Kelsterbach, einer 100%igen Tochter des Landes Hessen, nach europaweiter Ausschreibung im April 2011 an ein interdisziplinares Forschungskonsortium, koordiniert von der Ruhr-Universitat Bochum und der ZEUS GmbH, Hagen, vergeben. Die Untersuchung wird vornehmlich in der Rhein-Main-Region sowie daruber hinaus an den Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg, Koln-Bonn und Stuttgart durchgefuhrt. Die Studie umfasst Langs- und Querschnittsuntersuchungen und eine epidemiologische Fall-Kontroll-Studie, in denen ein Methodenmix, bestehend aus akustischen Berechnungen und Messungen der Verkehrslarmexposition, Befragungen, physiologischen Messungen, psychologischen Testverfahren sowie Sekundardatenanalysen von Krankenkassendaten zum Einsatz kommt.

NORAH (Noise-Related Annoyance, Cognition, and Health) - Konzept einer Studie zur Wirkung von Verkehrslärm bei Anwohnern von Flughäfen

Nachtflugverbote haben fur Konzepte zum Schutz der Bevolkerung vor den Folgen nachtlichen Fluglarms an Bedeutung gewonnen, seitdem das Bundesverwaltungsgericht im Jahre 2006 der planfeststellenden Behorde im Fall Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg lnternational (BBI) die beantragte, bis auf wenige Ausnahmen uneingeschrankte Betriebserlaubnis in der Nacht versagt hat und im Fall Flughafen Leipzig/Halle (FLH) zwar den nachtlichen Verkehr des Express-Fracht-Kreuzes billigte, im Ubrigen aber wie bei BBI eine erneute Abwagung der Zulassung nachtlichen Flugverkehrs verlangte. Das hohere passive Schallschutzniveau des DLR-Konzepts im Vergleich zu anderen Schutzkonzepten spielte im Fall Leipzig/Halle fur das Bundesverwaltungsgericht keine entscheidende Rolle. Anhand subjektiver Daten zu Bettzeiten und objektiver Daten zum Schlafverhalten werden mogliche Folgen der durch das Bundesverwaltungsgericht vorgenommenen Dreiteilung der Nacht in Kernruhezeit (0:00 bis 5:00 Uhr), Nachtrandstunden (22:00 bis 0:00 Uhr und 5:00 bis 6:00 Uhr) und Tagesstunden fur den Schutz des Schlafs diskutiert. Die Autoren kommen zu dem Schluss, dass aus schlafphysiologischer Sicht (1) die Tagesrandstunden keineswegs als unproblematisch eingestuft werden durfen, insbesondere fur die nicht erwachsene Bevolkerung und bei Flughafen mit relevantem Verkehrsaufkommen in dieser Zeitperiode, (2) dass es deshalb bei derzeitigem Kenntnisstand unklar ist bzw. einer Einzelfallprufung unterliegt, ob eine Kernruhezeit einem kontingentierten, aber zeitlich unbeschrankten Flugbetrieb in der Nacht tatsachlich vorzuziehen ist, und dass (3) die Gleichstellung der fur BBI und FLH aufgestellten Schutzkonzepte hinsichtlich ihrer grundsatzlichen Eignung zur Abwehr unzumutbarer Belastungen durch das Bundesverwaltungsgericht wahrscheinlich dazu fuhren wird, dass bevorzugt das Schutzkonzept mit dem geringeren Schutzniveau Anwendung findet, was aus schlafphysiologischer Sicht nicht unbedenklich ist.

Schlafphysiologische Bewertung nächtlicher Flugbetriebsbeschränkungen vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Urteile des Bundesverwaltungsgerichts

Introduction. This study focused on the effects of noise on sleep at night and day and on after-effects i.e. sleepiness and impaired performance during a following 8-h work shift. Methods. Forty-eight persons (23 male, 25 female; 19-30 yrs) slept in a balanced order four consecutive nights (23-7 h) and four consecutive days (14-22 h) in the laboratory and performed thereafter 8-h work shifts in the morning or in the night, respectively. Sleep was indicated by the Sleep Efficiency Index (SEI) and the Sleep Disturbance Index (SDI). Sleepiness was rated after awakening and hourly during work shifts, and during the latter followed by four performance tests. The first and another randomly chosen sleep period were noise-free. During the six other sleep periods the participants were exposed to railway and to road traffic noise with equivalent noise levels between 41 and 56 dBA. Results. SEI and SDI indicated worse sleep during days than during nights but were only moderately affected by noise. Sleepiness was the only variable where noise and shift type showed an interaction. Soon after awakening sleepiness was rated higher after night than after day sleep and higher after noise exposure during sleep. Sleepiness was after sleep in noise throughout the work shifts higher than after sleep in quiet and reaction times were then prolonged. Conclusion. The same noise had the same effect on day sleep and on night sleep. In the real life situation noise is about 8 to 15 dBA higher during the day than during the night suggesting stronger sleep disturbances of day sleep.

Objectives: Sleep disturbances due to irregular work schedules or circadian misalignment occur regularly during stays in space and are a major reason for medication. Reduced sleep quality and quantity may impair cognitive performance and are likely to result in human errors and accidents. Psychomotor performance degradation is a sensitive marker for sleep loss induced vigilance deficits. We implemented a Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) of particularly short duration (3 min) on a portable handheld computer which can be administered in operational settings. The current study aimed at examining the validity of this test.
Methods: In the DLR sleep laboratory 47 volunteers (21 female, mean age 27 ± 5 years) were examined during 12 consecutive days and nights each. Participants’ sleep was restricted to induce fatigue and different levels of performance impairment (38h awake, 4h sleep, and 4h sleep after moderate alcohol intake). Two nights of recovery were granted between sleep restriction conditions in a cross-over design. During wakefulness participants conducted a battery of performance tests in 3-hour intervals (in total 63 sessions) that reflect the operational demands in dynamic environments such as aviation/space (4 tasks) and road transport (lane change task). For reliability assessment, we calculated internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) and parallel test reliability with a 10-min PVT on a desktop computer (Pearson’s correlation). To assess validity, we correlated the 3-min PVT with the tasks of the test battery under the different sleep loss conditions. Results from the 9am test sessions are reported.
Results: Internal consistency was very high with α = 0.98. Correlations with the 10-min PVT proved to be significant showing a good reliability under sleep restriction and extended wakefulness (r: 0.63 to 0.87). Three of the 4 tasks reflecting operational demands in aviation/space correlated significantly with the 3-min PVT (r: 0.45 and 0.7). The fourth task correlated poorly presumably reflecting additional different aspects of performance. The 3-min PVT correlated significantly with performance in the lane change task (r: 0.34 and 0.56).
Conclusions: The 3-min PVT detected performance impairments after different degrees of sleep restriction reliably and with good validity. Impairments observed in the 3-min PVT paralleled those in the 10-min PVT and in performance tasks reflecting demands of operators in aviation/space and transport.
