The present study is to enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling from a flat square heater immersed in nanofluid (water mixed with extremely small amount of nanosized particles). The test results show that the enhancement of CHF was drastic when nanofluid is used as a cooling liquid instead of pure water. The experiment was performed to measure and compare pool boiling curves of pure water and nanofluid at the pressure of 2.89 psia (Tsat=60 °C) using 1×1 cm2 polished copper surfaces as a boiling surface. The tested nanofluid contains alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles dispersed in distilled and deionized water. Tested concentrations of nanoparticles range from 0 g/l to 0.05 g/l. The measured pool boiling curves of nanofluids saturated at 60 °C have demonstrated that the CHF increases dramatically (∼200% increase) compared to pure water case; however, the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients appear to be about the same.

Effect of nanoparticles on critical heat flux of water in pool boiling heat transfer

A colloidal mixture of nano-sized particles in a base fluid, called nanofluids, tremendously enhances the heat transfer characteristics of the original fluid, and is ideally suited for practical applications due to its marvelous characteristics. This article addresses the unique features of nanofluids, such as enhancement of heat transfer, improvement in thermal conductivity, increase in surface volume ratio, Brownian motion, thermophoresis, etc. In addition, the article summarizes the recent research in experimental and theoretical studies on forced and free convective heat transfer in nanofluids, their thermo-physical properties and their applications, and identifies the challenges and opportunities for future research.

Enhancement of heat transfer using nanofluids—An overview

Boiling is a common mechanism for liquid-vapor phase transition and is widely exploited in power generation and refrigeration devices and systems. The efficacy of boiling heat transfer is characterized by two parameters: (a) heat transfer coefficient (HTC) or the thermal conductance; (b) the critical heat flux (CHF) limit that demarcates the transition from high HTC to very low HTC. While increasing the CHF and the HTC has significant impact on system-level energy efficiency, safety, and cost, their values for water and other heat transfer fluids have essentially remained unchanged for many decades. Here we report that the high surface tension forces offered by liquids in nanowire arrays made of Si and Cu can be exploited to increase both the CHF and the HTC by more than 100%.
