Qualitative Developmental Research Methods in their Historical and Epistemological Contexts

Abstract: Methodologie ist kein mit unterschiedlichen Methoden gefullter "Werkzeugkasten", aus dem Forschende bestimmte Methoden aufgrund personlicher oder sozialer Praferenzen auswahlen: Was wir von den ganzheitspsychologischen Traditionen des letzten Jahrhunderts gelernt haben ist, dass bei der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Entwicklungsprozessen das gesamte Phanomen berucksichtigt werden muss. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werfen wir einen Blick auf die fundamentale Ideologie, die qualitativen und quantitativen Methodologien in entwicklungsspezifischen Kontexten unterliegt. Hierbei nehmen wir auch die Bedeutung von "Entwicklung" nochmals genauer unter die Lupe, d.h. die direktionale Transformation von Ganzheiten. Neben einer kurzen geschichtlichen Ubersicht uber "verlorene" Entwicklungsperspektiven sprechen wir auch die Moglichkeit einer Unifikation von qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden an. Letztendlich hoffen wir zu verdeutlichen, dass Methodologie Teil eines epistemologischen Prozesses ist. Methodologie kann dabei die empirische Realitat im Prozess der Wissenskonstruktion auf-, aber ebenso leicht verdecken. Ambivalence under scrutiny: Returning to the future

Abstract: This Special Issue on the study of ambivalent processes in psychology integrates issues from contemporary evolutionary, cognitive, and cultural psychology with new directions of formal models that are available in qualitative mathematics. Tribute is paid to the pioneer of the study of ambivalence—Else Frenkel-Brunswik. Her work antedates most of our contemporary efforts in this field. Becoming free from the limits of its obsession with numbers in lieu of “measurement”, psychology at our time faces the challenge of investigation of dynamic psychological complexity. Contemporary mathematics—which is qualitative in its nature—provides new opportunities for psychology. New mathematical models—based on topology (Morse functions) and from intuitionistic formal logic (theory of locales)—are shown to provide promising new directions for future research on ambivalence. Ambivalence in focus: Remembering the life and work of Else Frenkel-Brunswik

Abstract: Ambivalence plays an important role in human psychological functioning, yet few theories incorporate ambivalence as a focal topic. In this light, Else Frenkel-Brunswik was pioneer, for in her short lifetime she inspired the world of personality psychology by centring her study on ambivalence. The fruits of understanding surface level thought and behaviour through a place deeper inside are clear in her work; Frenkel-Brunswik provides a window into the presence of opposites within the self as well as the corresponding potential individuals have to avoid them. Broadly speaking, bringing ambivalence back as core topic for psychology allows models from a diverse array of perspectives to more fully account for the complexity of human life.

Review Essay: "Open Access" and its Social Context: New Colonialism in the Making?

Abstract: Ich gehe in meinem Beitrag davon aus, dass das, was derzeit als "open access", also freier Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Informationen bezeichnet wird, eigentlich lediglich eine Transformation traditioneller ("closed") Zugangsmodi ist; die Offenheit beschrankt sich auf ein offensichtlich attraktives Label. Von der sich vollziehenden institutionellen Re-Organisation profitieren vor allem okonomisch machtige – in der Regel "1. Welt-" – Forschungsgruppen und -einrichtungen, wahrend sich fur weniger reiche Forschende und Institutionen neue okonomische Barrieren bei der Publikation innovativer Forschungsergebnisse ergeben. Denn da die Kosten fur wissenschaftliche Veroffentlichungen von den Empfangern (Zeitschriften-Abonnenten) hin zu den Autoren und Autorinnen umgelegt werden, schafft die Open-Access-Initiative eher eine soziale Einbahnstrasse als neue Formen offener wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation. Indem sie die Quellen wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation monopolisiert, vereitelt sie ihre eigenen behaupteten Ziele. Die in der Sonderausgabe der Zeitschrift Historische Sozialforschung veroffentlichten und hier besprochenen Artikel behandeln ein breites Spektrum spezifischer Fragen, die mit dieser rasant wachsenden sozialen Wissenschaftsbewegung verbunden sind, in sehr produktiver Weise. Es wird allerdings versaumt, den soziologischen Charakter der Aushandlungen uber die Kontrolle wissenschaftlicher Kommunikationskanale, in denen die Open-Access-Bewegung agiert, angemessen zu analysieren.
