TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present faculty perceptions of the first month of iPad deployment in a national college system and a case study describing the integration of mobile learning devices in one college, interpreted within the framework of a SWOT analysis.
Abstract: This article presents faculty perceptions of the first month of iPad deployment in a national college system and a case study describing the integration of mobile learning devices in one college, interpreted within the framework of a SWOT analysis. We include a brief history of the implementation; description of the three-tier structure of infrastructure, pedagogy, and content; faculty perceptions; and pedagogy interview findings. We collected data using 1) case study interviews, 2) a faculty dispositional survey, and 3) iPad lead faculty. Overall, the large-scale deployment of iPad mobile learning devices was associated with high faculty engagement in formal and informal professional development activities and adoption of an active student-centered pedagogy. In addition, the program stimulated innovative approaches to technical challenges; and it spurred development and evaluation of new digital content.

TL;DR: In this paper, a game show-like user interface called "Kahoot" was introduced to assist students in preparing for high-stakes examinations, and a study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternate teaching approach based on the testing effect.
Abstract: Lower than expected high-stakes examination scores were being observed in a first-year general psychology class. This research sought an alternate approach that would assist students in preparing for high-stakes examinations. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of an alternate teaching approach based on the testing effect to address low high-stakes examination scores. This was accomplished through the introduction of an online quizzing application that utilized a game show-like user interface called Kahoot™. The results showed a significant difference in high-stakes examination scores for students who utilized Kahoot™ versus students who did not. It can be suggested that pedagogical tools like Kahoot™ have the potential to enhance and improve high-stakes examination scores at the college and university level. Students that used Kahoot™ felt positive about their experience. The results of this study also suggest that creating a fun and engaging environment also supports improved academic performance.

TL;DR: This paper examined the effect of age, gender, racial identity, attitude, aptitude, self-regulated learning, and self-efficacy on online learning using a constructivist and an objectivist instructional format.
Abstract: Science educators recognize the potential of the Internet as an educational tool However, little research based on educational theory has been conducted to determine how they can maximize the learning potential of this relatively new teaching tool A constructivist and an objectivist instructional format containing the same information was created and presented online The online study examines the effect on learning of variables such as age, gender, racial identity, attitude, aptitude, self-regulated learning, and self-efficacy The only significant interaction showed that older participants perform better using an objectivist approach Therefore, it appears that these characteristics should not be roadblocks to online learning

TL;DR: This on-line study examined the effect of variables such as age, gender, racial identify, attitude, aptitude, self-regulated learning and self-efficacy on learning and indicated that typical learner characteristics were not road blocks to on- line learning.
Abstract: Science educators recognize the potential of the Internet as an educational tool One of the major aspects of this study was designed to illustrate the need for self-regulated learning when using the Internet for education Two alternate forms of an on-line instructional web site containing the same information were developed The first, a constructivist format provided more links for students to wander and build concepts with the material in ways that may be consistent with their particular learning style The second is called an objectivist format and is similar to presentations found in academic settings where lectures are provided This on-line study examined the effect of variables such as age, gender, racial identify, attitude, aptitude, self-regulated learning and self-efficacy on learning Results indicated that typical learner characteristics were not road blocks to on-line learning

TL;DR: An examination of the first six months of a national college-level iPad implementation project involving 14,000 new students based on faculty shift from substituting their teaching methods with mobile technology to augmentation of teach methods with new affordances of mobile technology is presented.
Abstract: Purpose – This article aims to present an examination of the first six months of a national college-level iPad implementation project involving 14,000 new students based on faculty shift from substituting their teaching methods with mobile technology to augmentation of teaching methods with new affordances of mobile technology. Design/methodology/approach – A χ2 analysis of descriptions of teaching practices at a baseline sharing event among teachers (called iCelebrate) and a second similar event (iCelebrate2) was used to compare the abstracts for the events using an alpha of 0.05. The parameters examined were five indicators from the technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) model including the substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition (SAMR) levels of technology integration. Findings – No significant difference (p=0.069) was found in the technology focus of abstracts, although there was a significant (p=0.0015) difference in the content focus. There was no significant diffe...

TL;DR: Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) as mentioned in this paper is a self-report instrument consisting of 6 motivation subscales and 9 learning strategies scales and has been used by hundreds of researchers and instructors throughout the world.
Abstract: The goal of this article is to discuss one of Paul Pintrich's more enduring legacies: the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), an 81-item, self-report instrument consisting of 6 motivation subscales and 9 learning strategies scales. The MSLQ has proven to be a reliable and useful tool that can be adapted for a number of different purposes for researchers, instructors, and students. The MSLQ has been translated into multiple languages and has been used by hundreds of researchers and instructors throughout the world. This article reviews the history of the MSLQ and discusses how it has been used to (a) address the nature of motivation and use of learning strategies in different types of content areas and target populations; (b) help refine our theoretical understanding of motivational constructs, how they are distinct from one another, and what individual differences exist in self-regulated learning; and (c) evaluate the motivational and cognitive effects of different aspects of instruction.
