Journal ArticleDOI

The evolution of strength and crystalline phases for alkali-activated ground blast furnace slag and fly ash-based geopolymers

TL;DR: In this paper, the increase in strength and evolution of crystalline phases in inorganic polymer cement, made by the alkali activation of slag, Class C and Class F fly ashes, was followed using compressive strength test and synchrotron X-ray diffraction in order to increase the crystallinity of the product.
Journal ArticleDOI

Use of CaO as an activator for producing a price-competitive non-cement structural binder using ground granulated blast furnace slag

TL;DR: The use of CaO demonstrates a superior potential for the activation of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), and it produces a higher mechanical strength than calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microstructural and strength improvements through the use of Na2CO3 in a cementless Ca(OH)2-activated Class F fly ash system

TL;DR: In this article, the beneficial effects of Na{sub 2}CO{sub 3} as an additive for microstructural and strength improvements in a Ca(OH)-activated fly ash system were explored.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of slag characteristics on strength development and reaction products in a CaO-activated slag system

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors collected four ground granulated blast furnace slags from different manufacturing locations for CaO-activation to investigate the influence of the slag characteristics on strength development and the reaction products.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of four additional activators on hydrated-lime [Ca(OH)2] activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of four supplementary activators were investigated on Ca(OH)2-activated slag system, and the results showed that Na-based additive was less desirable than Ca-based ones in the Ca-OH 2-activated system because Na-additives tended to produce lower 28-day strengths; they synthesized U-phases, which may cause expansive failures at later ages; and they might suppress the dissolution of Ca( OH 2.
