Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software. Using the NVivo and Atlas.ti in the research projects based on the methodology of grounded theory

Abstract: Our presentation raises the matter of the application of specialist software which assists qualitative data analysis in research based on the procedures of grounded theory (GT) methodology. The aim is to present the relationships between the procedures of GT methodology and the Atlas.ti and NVivo software. During our presentation, we would like to demonstrate the manner in which the functions available in the Atlas.ti and NVivo software may be applied when carrying out analysis based on GT methodology. Hence, while we focus on technical issues (collecting, editing, segregating and ordering the data), we also look at the analytical possibilities (the process of coding, searching in respect of codes, writing memos, creating relationships between the codes, establishing a network view) of the presented software.

His undertaking is inspired by the belief that man has the possibility of almost complete control of his fate if only he will be guided by science, and that his failures are attributable to ignorance or folly. The main approach is through biological psychology, but all the social sciences are appealed to and utilized in an effort to deal with the human problem as a whole. The relative immaturity of the sciences dealing with man is continually stressed, but it is claimed that they provide a body of facts and principles which are “far above zero knowledge”, and that even now they are capable of affording valuable guidance in the shaping of public policy. Abstract: In diesem Beitrag verdeutliche ich meine Besorgnis uber zahlreiche Umformungen der Grounded Theory (GT), die mit deren Rezeption durch Methodologien der qualitative Datenanalyse (QDA) einhergehen, und hieraus folgende Erosionen. Ich skizziere zunachst einige Beispiele hierfur, um danach die essentiellen Bestandteile der klassischen GT-Methodologie zusammenzufassen. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Beitrag meine Besorgnis uber die wachsende, aber meines Erachtens missverstandene Einvernahme von GT durch QDA-Methodologien veranschaulicht und zugleich als einfuhrender Leitfaden fur Novizen und Novizinnen dient, die daran interessiert sind, die grundlegenden Prinzipien der GT nachzuvollziehen. Mirrors and Masks: The Search for Identity.

Abstract: Who am I, and how do I know? I am different in talking to different people; I adapt my mask to the expectations I see mirrored in them. Do they change, too? Doctors, no less than others, need to be reminded that the word person, the implications of which we consider so essential to modern medical practice, is derived from a word meaning a mask, such as players wore. The author of this stimulating book goes beyond this verbal derivation to a closer scrutiny of the essential connections of the many masks each of us wears. Names, appraisals, memberships, history, prestige, subtle and overt changes in character, and the constant mutual modifications incident to social intercourse are discussed. Strangely, the author omits all mention of the most typical and vivid American identity confusion—that of the “American” Indians.
