Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Refusal of intramuscular (IM) vitamin K administration by parents is an emerging problem. Our objective was to assess the frequency of and factors associated with refusal of IM vitamin K administration in well newborns in the United States. METHODS: We determined the number of newborns admitted to well newborn units whose parents refused IM vitamin K administration in the Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns network and, in a nested patient-control study, identified factors associated with refusal of IM vitamin K administration by using a multiple logistic regression model. RESULTS: Of 102 878 newborns from 35 Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns sites, parents of 638 (0.6%) refused IM vitamin K administration. Frequency of refusal at individual sites varied from 0% to 2.3%. Exclusive breastfeeding (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.4; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.1–5.5), non-Hispanic white race and/or ethnicity (aOR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.2–2.4), female sex (aOR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.2–2.3), gestational age (aOR = 1.2; 95% CI: 1.1–1.4), and mother’s age (aOR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02–1.08) were significantly associated with refusal of IM vitamin K administration. Refusal of the administration of both ocular prophylaxis and hepatitis B vaccine was also strongly associated with refusal of IM vitamin K administration (aOR = 88.7; 95% CI: 50.4–151.9). CONCLUSIONS: Refusal of IM vitamin K by parents of newborns is a significant problem. Interventions to minimize risks to these newborns are needed.

Abstract: Introduction: Because neonatal jaundice remains one of the most commonly treated conditions of the newborn infant, it is important to assess the unintended consequences of treatment with phototherapy. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether treatment with phototherapy affects breastfeeding duration in newborns >35 weeks gestation. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II. The exposure of interest was treatment of neonatal jaundice with phototherapy. The outcomes of interest were any breastfeeding through 12 months and exclusive breastfeeding through 4 months. Logistic regression models were developed to evaluate the association between the exposure and outcomes of interest. All models were adjusted for maternal age, race, education, household income, and gestational age, as well as for several potential markers of suboptimal breastfeeding. Abstract: As critical dimensions of resist features shrink, the sidewall roughness in resists may adversely affect the uniformity of the critical dimensions. Because x-ray lithography uses 1:1 size mapping of the mask pattern to the resist, it is plausible that any roughness or defects in the mask would transfer into the resist, contributing to the overall sidewall roughness of the resist feature. This article will report on our efforts to ascertain the contribution of mask sidewall roughness to the overall sidewall roughness in chemically amplified resists exposed by x-ray lithography by comparing the directly measured sidewall roughness of x-ray mask features to that of resist sidewall roughness patterned with the x-ray mask. Abstract: The authors report a compact, high repetition rate, all-solid-state Kerr-lens modelocked Cr4+:YAG laser, pumped by either a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser or a diode-pumped Yb-doped fibre laser. Femtosecond pulses have been obtained, tunable from 1.505 to 1.550 µm, with single beam modelocked average output powers as high as 280 mW at repetition rates of up to 1 GHz.

Abstract: Aims: Long exposure to high temperatures or UV-radiation may induce negative effects on vine physiology and grape composition. Here, the effects of two methods to moderate radiation and temperature in the fruit zone of a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard were evaluated against a control.Methods and results: The treatments assessed were: (a) periodical spraying of kaolin on leaves and bunches and (b) fruit zone netting with a Raschell’s type mesh. The kaolin-based treatment increased the reflectance of light and moderately reduced fruit temperature (~1oC below the control), whilst the shading net caused a significant reduction in radiation and temperature in the fruit zone (~7oC below the control). The Net treatment showed lower (more negative) stem water potential values than the control, but did not persist until the end of the trial. Also, none of the treatments led to significant changes in stomatal conductance, transpiration or CO2 assimilation throughout the season. However, the incidence and severity of fruit dehydration was significantly lower in the treated plants compared to the control. Finally, no differences in fruit chemical composition were observed between the treatments and the control.Conclusion: Under the conditions of this trial, both treatments tested were sufficient in moderating the negative effects of excess radiation or high temperature on grape berries.Significance and impact of the study: Kaolin-based particle spraying and fruit zone netting were proved to be feasible practical alternatives to lessen the negative effects of excess radiation or high temperature on grape berries, under hot climate.

The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Abstract: Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).
