TL;DR: In this article, a method is proposed to let variable-speed wind turbines emulate inertia and support primary frequency control, where the required power is obtained from the kinetic energy stored in the rotating mass of the turbine blades.
Abstract: The increasing penetration of variable-speed wind turbines in the electricity grid will result in a reduction of the number of connected conventional power plants. This will require changes in the way the grid frequency is controlled. In this letter, a method is proposed to let variable-speed wind turbines emulate inertia and support primary frequency control. The required power is obtained from the kinetic energy stored in the rotating mass of the turbine blades.

TL;DR: In this paper, the trends in wind turbine generator systems are discussed and a review of current and possible future generator systems is presented. But the main focus of this paper is on the current state of the art.
Abstract: This paper reviews the trends in wind turbine generator systems. After discussing some important requirements and basic relations, it describes the currently used systems: the constant speed system with squirrel-cage induction generator, and the three variable speed systems with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), with gearbox and fully rated converter, and direct drive (DD). Then, possible future generator systems are reviewed. Hydraulic transmissions are significantly lighter than gearboxes and enable continuously variable transmission, but their efficiency is lower. A brushless DFIG is a medium speed generator without brushes and with improved low-voltage ride-through characteristics compared with the DFIG. Magnetic pseudo DDs are smaller and lighter than DD generators, but need a sufficiently low and stable magnet price to be successful. In addition, superconducting generators can be smaller and lighter than normal DD generators, but both cost and reliability need experimental demonstration. In power electronics, there is a trend toward reliable modular multilevel topologies.

TL;DR: In this article, two modular multilevel topologies are proposed to step up or step down dc in medium-and high-voltage dc applications: the tuned filter modular multiilevel dc converter and the push-pull modular multi-level dc converter.
Abstract: The modular multilevel converter (M2C) has become an increasingly important topology in medium- and high-voltage applications. A limitation is that it relies on positive and negative half-cycles of the ac output voltage waveform to achieve charge balance on the submodule capacitors. To overcome this constraint a secondary power loop is introduced that exchanges power with the primary power loops at the input and output. Power is exchanged between the primary and secondary loops by using the principle of orthogonality of power flow at different frequencies. Two modular multilevel topologies are proposed to step up or step down dc in medium- and high-voltage dc applications: the tuned filter modular multilevel dc converter and the push-pull modular multilevel dc converter. An analytical simulation of the latter converter is presented to explain the operation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed dynamic models in MATLAB/Simulink, validated it through experiments, and investigated the behavior of doubly fed induction generator during unbalanced grid voltage condition, and proposed new controllers in separated positive and negative sequence.
Abstract: Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) still shares a large part in today's wind power market. It provides the benefits of variable speed operation cost-effectively, and can control its active and reactive power independently. Crowbar protection is often adopted to protect the rotor-side voltage source converter (VSC) from transient overcurrent during grid voltage dip. But under unbalanced grid voltage condition, the severe problems are not the transient overcurrent, but the electric torque pulsation and dc voltage ripple in the back-to-back VSCs. This paper develops dynamic models in MATLAB/Simulink, validates it through experiments, investigates the behavior of DFIG during unbalanced grid voltage condition, and proposes new controllers in separated positive and negative sequence. Methods to separate positive and negative sequence components in real time are also developed, and their responses to unsymmetrical voltage dip are compared. Simulation results prove that the separated positive and negative sequence controllers limit the torque pulsation and dc voltage ripple effectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the switching behavior of normally OFF silicon carbide (SiC) JFETs in an inverter for a motor drive and found that the capacitive coupling between SiC devices in the bridge leg and heat sinks significantly deteriorates the JETs' switching performance.
Abstract: This paper investigates the switching behavior of normally OFF silicon carbide (SiC) JFETs in an inverter for a motor drive. The parasitic ringing caused by different parasitic effects is analyzed. Two different methods, the use of an RC snubber and the use of suppression ferrite component, are investigated for dampening the parasitic oscillations. It is found that applying a ferrite bead not only dampens the parasitic oscillations, but also results in significantly lower switching losses. Furthermore, it is shown that the capacitive coupling between SiC devices in the bridge leg and heat sinks significantly deteriorates the JFETs' switching performance. The effect of two substrates, an insulated metal substrate and a printed circuit board, on the capacitive coupling is investigated. A method in which the use of two separate heat spreaders minimizes the capacitive coupling, thus, exploiting the full potential of fast SiC JFETs is proposed.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, the dual-active-bridge (DAB) isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter (IBDC) serves as the core circuit of high frequency-link (HFL) power conversion systems.
Abstract: High-frequency-link (HFL) power conversion systems (PCSs) are attracting more and more attentions in academia and industry for high power density, reduced weight, and low noise without compromising efficiency, cost, and reliability. In HFL PCSs, dual-active-bridge (DAB) isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter (IBDC) serves as the core circuit. This paper gives an overview of DAB-IBDC for HFL PCSs. First, the research necessity and development history are introduced. Second, the research subjects about basic characterization, control strategy, soft-switching solution and variant, as well as hardware design and optimization are reviewed and analyzed. On this basis, several typical application schemes of DAB-IBDC for HPL PCSs are presented in a worldwide scope. Finally, design recommendations and future trends are presented. As the core circuit of HFL PCSs, DAB-IBDC has wide prospects. The large-scale practical application of DAB-IBDC for HFL PCSs is expected with the recent advances in solid-state semiconductors, magnetic and capacitive materials, and microelectronic technologies.

TL;DR: An overview of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless (BL) drives for EVs and HEVs is presented, with emphasis on machine topologies, drive operations, and control strategies.
Abstract: With ever-increasing concerns on our environment, there is a fast growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid EVs (HEVs) from automakers, governments, and customers. As electric drives are the core of both EVs and HEVs, it is a pressing need for researchers to develop advanced electric-drive systems. In this paper, an overview of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless (BL) drives for EVs and HEVs is presented, with emphasis on machine topologies, drive operations, and control strategies. Then, three major research directions of the PM BL drive systems are elaborated, namely, the magnetic-geared outer-rotor PM BL drive system, the PM BL integrated starter-generator system, and the PM BL electric variable-transmission system.
