Abstract: Feminist historians have long complained that women and children have been written out of mainstream history. Similar concerns on the absence of women are now being expressed by economists. This chapter introduces some of the recent economic history literature that addresses this gap. Key aspects discussed include workplaces and wages of children and women, and their roles in the context of economic development.
