TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the use of saturation sampling as a methodological concept, frequently employed in descriptions of qualitative studies in various areas of knowledge, particularly in the field of health care, and discuss and confront the following topics: definition of sampling closure by theoretical saturation, difficulties in the acceptance and operationalization of intentional samples, adequate size of the intentional sample, the significance of valuing what is repeated or the differences contained in the sample reports, inadequate uses of expressions containing the term saturation, and finally possible metaphors for understanding the concept.
Abstract: The transparency and clarity of research reports, emphasizing the data collection stage, are considered important parameters for evaluating the scientific rigor of qualitative studies. The current paper aims to analyze the use of saturation sampling as a methodological concept, frequently employed in descriptions of qualitative studies in various areas of knowledge, particularly in the field of health care. We discuss and confront the following topics: definition of sampling closure by theoretical saturation; difficulties in the acceptance and operationalization of intentional samples (with examples), adequate size of the intentional sample, the significance of valuing what is repeated or the differences contained in the sample reports, inadequate uses of expressions containing the term saturation, and finally possible metaphors for understanding the concept.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a method to organize sample closing by saturation, with a sequence of eight procedural steps for treating and analyzing data collected through open or semi-structured interviews or focus groups.
Abstract: A qualitative study's methodological transparency is considered a key factor for achieving its reliability and should be guaranteed by the researchers. Closing the sampling process by saturation is a common approach, but it is rarely made explicit in research reports. Qualitative researchers also commonly experience technical difficulties in objectively identifying saturation. This article proposes a method to organize sample closing by saturation, with a sequence of eight procedural steps for treating and analyzing data collected through open or semi-structured interviews or focus groups. The article aims to help researchers objectively explain how and when saturation occurred and to allow their readers to know how this process occurred.

TL;DR: The psychometric properties of the ADBB are investigated in a larger sample from a culturally different population to suggest that it may be a useful screening instrument to detect signs of psychiatric alterations related to withdrawal behavior in primary care services, and it is likely to provide consistent information.
Abstract: The Alarm Distress Baby Scale (ADBB) aims at assessing infant withdrawal behavior. A previous validation study revealed acceptable reliability and validity indices. The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the scale in a larger sample from a culturally different population. Pediatricians evaluated the behavior of 122 infants, 2 and 19 months old, using the ADBB during routine physical consultation. Four investigators (two pediatricians and two nurses not specialized in pediatric care) examined video recordings of the evaluations. Results showed good interrater reliability coefficients among pediatricians and poor correlation when all professionals were grouped together. Test-retest reliability revealed good intraexaminer agreement (r = 0.91). The pediatricians' evaluation using the ADBB was compared with a psychiatric examination to investigate the scale's criterion validity. The cutoff point of 5 provided the best clinical validity (sensitivity of 79%, specificity of 81%). Results from construct validity showed that the scale had three dimensions. Comparison of the factor solution with other construct validity studies of the same instrument revealed similarities and differences. Results suggest that the ADBB may be a useful screening instrument to detect signs of psychiatric alterations related to withdrawal behavior in primary care services, and it is likely to provide consistent information.

TL;DR: This work is one of the few large works which one would gladly have had even fuller; its whole contents are of such a quality that curtailment in any section would have been a loss.
Abstract: This work consists of two volumes, and extends over eighteen hundred closely printed pages. In the preface we are informed that the greater part was in manuscript when the pen dropped from the author's hand. The section on Diseases of the Heart was not completed, and that on Diseases of the Skin was not commenced. Dr Wilks has completed the former; while the editor, Dr Pye-Smith, has supplied the latter. The range of the work is the same as that of other treatises on the Principles and Practice of Medicine, while owing to its size greater freedom has necessarily been obtained for a more elaborate treatment of the varied subjects with which such a work deals, than could be possible in one of more restricted dimensions. But this is one of the few large works which one would gladly have had even fuller; its whole contents are of such a quality that curtailment in any section would have been a loss. It is quite impossible in the space at our disposal to critically review the special teaching of the various chapters, and yet without this there is difficulty in conveying anything like an accurate impression of what the book is. Even to class it as the best work

TL;DR: Palavras-chave as discussed by the authors discusses sampling and saturation in qualitative research and discusses the following questions: To what extent individual interlocutions obtained in the field can be understood as revelations of the group and allow inferences about it? What would be the preconditions for a sufficient and reliable sample? In a project, should the number of people to be interviewed and the time for field observation be established previously? How many interviews and how much observation time are needed for a good fieldwork? When should the search for more data be discontinued?
Sampling and saturation in qualitative research: consensuses and controversies Abstract: This essay on sampling in qualitative research and on the concept of saturation discusses the following questions: To what extent individual interlocutions obtained in the field can be understood as revelations of the group and allow inferences about it? What would be the preconditions for a sufficient and reliable sample? In a project, should the number of people to be interviewed and the time for field observation be established previously? How many interviews and how much observation time are needed for a good fieldwork? When should the search for more data be discontinued? The responses are based on the specific literature and on the personal experience of the author, showing that, in principle, quantification escapes the logic of qualitative studies.
