Abstract: We propose and evaluate a new algorithm for checking the universality of nondeterministic finite automata. In contrast to the standard algorithm, which uses the subset construction to explicitly determinize the automaton, we keep the determinization step implicit. Our algorithm computes the least fixed point of a monotone function on the lattice of antichains of state sets. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm experimentally using the random automaton model recently proposed by Tabakov and Vardi. We show that on the difficult instances of this probabilistic model, the antichain algorithm outperforms the standard one by several orders of magnitude. We also show how variations of the antichain method can be used for solving the language-inclusion problem for nondeterministic finite automata, and the emptiness problem for alternating finite automata.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the structure of underlying automata based constructions for solving the LTL realizability and synthesis problem. We show how to reduce the LTL realizability problem to a game with an observer that checks that the game visits a bounded number of times accepting states of a universal co-Buchi word automaton. We show that such an observer can be made deterministic and that this deterministic observer has a nice structure which can be exploited by an incremental algorithm that manipulates antichains of game positions. We have implemented this new algorithm and our first results are very encouraging.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a parametric semantics for timed controllers called the Almost ASAP (as soon as possible) semantics. This semantics is a relaxation of the usual ASAP semantics (also called the maximal progress semantics) which is a mathematical idealization that cannot be implemented by any physical device no matter how fast it is. On the contrary, any correct Almost ASAP controller can be implemented by a program on a hardware if this hardware is fast enough. We study the properties of this semantics and show how it can be analyzed using the tool HyTech.

Abstract: In this paper, we present new monolithic and compositional algorithms to solve the LTL realizability problem. Those new algorithms are based on a reduction of the LTL realizability problem to a game whose winning condition is defined by a universal automaton on infinite words with a k-co-Buchi acceptance condition. This acceptance condition asks that runs visit at most k accepting states, so it implicitly defines a safety game. To obtain efficient algorithms from this construction, we need several additional ingredients. First, we study the structure of the underlying automata constructions, and we show that there exists a partial order that structures the state space of the underlying safety game. This partial order can be used to define an efficient antichain algorithm. Second, we show that the algorithm can be implemented in an incremental way by considering increasing values of k in the acceptance condition. Finally, we show that for large LTL formulas that are written as conjunctions of smaller formulas, we can solve the problem compositionally by first computing winning strategies for each conjunct that appears in the large formula. We report on the behavior of those algorithms on several benchmarks. We show that the compositional algorithms are able to handle LTL formulas that are several pages long.

Abstract: The algorithmic approach to the analysis of timed and hybrid systems is fundamentally limited by undecidability, of universality in the timed case (where all continuous variables are clocks), and of emptiness in the rectangular case (which includes drifting clocks). Traditional proofs of undecidability encode a single Turing computation by a single timed trajectory. These proofs have nurtured the hope that the introduction of "fuzziness" into timed and hybrid models (in the sense that a system cannot distinguish between trajectories that are sufficiently similar) may lead to decidability. We show that this is not the case, by sharpening both fundamental undecidability results. Besides the obvious blow our results deal to the algorithmic method, they also prove that the standard model of timed and hybrid systems, while not "robust" in its definition of trajectory acceptance (which is affected by tiny perturbations in the timing of events), is quite robust in its mathematical properties: the undecidability barriers are not affected by reasonable perturbations of the model.

Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Abstract: In recent years research in the planning community has moved increasingly towards application of planners to realistic problems involving both time and many types of resources. For example, interest in planning demonstrated by the space research community has inspired work in observation scheduling, planetary rover exploration and spacecraft control domains. Other temporal and resource-intensive domains including logistics planning, plant control and manufacturing have also helped to focus the community on the modelling and reasoning issues that must be confronted to make planning technology meet the challenges of application. The International Planning Competitions have acted as an important motivating force behind the progress that has been made in planning since 1998. The third competition (held in 2002) set the planning community the challenge of handling time and numeric resources. This necessitated the development of a modelling language capable of expressing temporal and numeric properties of planning domains. In this paper we describe the language, PDDL2.1, that was used in the competition. We describe the syntax of the language, its formal semantics and the validation of concurrent plans. We observe that PDDL2.1 has considerable modelling power -- exceeding the capabilities of current planning technology -- and presents a number of important challenges to the research community.

Abstract: One approach to model checking software is based on the abstract-check-refine paradigm: build an abstract model, then check the desired property, and if the check fails, refine the model and start over. We introduce the concept of lazy abstraction to integrate and optimize the three phases of the abstract-check-refine loop. Lazy abstraction continuously builds and refines a single abstract model on demand, driven by the model checker, so that different parts of the model may exhibit different degrees of precision, namely just enough to verify the desired property. We present an algorithm for model checking safety properties using lazy abstraction and describe an implementation of the algorithm applied to C programs. We also provide sufficient conditions for the termination of the method.
