TL;DR: A unified framework of the common due date assignment and scheduling problems in the deterministic case is provided by surveying the literature concerning the models involving single machine and parallel machines by finding an optimal value of thecommon due date and the related optimal schedule.

TL;DR: It is shown in particular that, given any desired product mix, it is possible to start the system with enough jobs in process so that some machines will be fully utilized in steady-state and the productivity is optimal.
Abstract: Timed event-graphs, a special class of timed Petri nets, are used for modelling and analyzing job-shop systems. The modelling allows the steady-state performance of the system to be evaluated under a deterministic and cyclic production process. Given any fixed processing times, the productivity (i.e., production rate) of the system can be determined from the initial state. It is shown in particular that, given any desired product mix, it is possible to start the system with enough jobs in process so that some machines will be fully utilized in steady-state. These machines are called bottleneck machines, since they limit the throughput of the system. In that case, the system works at the maximal rate and the productivity is optimal. The minimal number of jobs in process allowing optimal functioning of the system is further specified as an integer linear programming problem. An efficient heuristic algorithm is developed to obtain a near-optimal solution. >

TL;DR: In this article, a simple two-fold heuristic algorithm capable of minimizing inter-cell material movement, and addressing industrial applications of realistic dimensions, is presented, where the first step of the proposed heuristic is a bottom-up aggregation procedure to minimize what is defined as "Normalized Inter-Cell Traffic". The second step is a procedure to attempt further improvement, in which the significance of a machine to a cell is validated.
Abstract: SUMMARY In this paper, the problem of obtaining a good decomposition of the manufacturing system into manufacturing cells is addressed. The parts can be partitioned into families, whereby each part family is assigned to a single cell. A simple twofold heuristic algorithm capable of minimizing inter-cell material movement, and addressing industrial applications of realistic dimensions is presented. The first step of the proposed heuristic is a bottom-up aggregation procedure to minimize what is defined as 'Normalized Inter-Cell Traffic'. The second step is a procedure to attempt further improvement, in which the significance of a machine to a cell is validated. A large scale industrial application of the system is also presented.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a model and a related algorithm for generating optimal cyclic schedules of hoist moves with time window constraints in a printed circuit board (PCB) electroplating facility based on the branch and bound approach.
Abstract: This paper proposes a model and a related algorithm for generating optimal cyclic schedules of hoist moves with time window constraints in a printed circuit board (PCB) electroplating facility. The algorithm is based on the branch and bound approach and requires the solution of a specific class of linear programming problems (LPP). These LPP are equivalent to the problems of the cycle time evaluation in bi-valued graphs. Computational experience is presented to compare the results obtained using this new algorithm with the ones proposed in the literature.

TL;DR: Deming's theory of management based on the 14 Points for Management is described in Out of the Crisis, originally published in 1982 as mentioned in this paper, where he explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them.
Abstract: According to W. Edwards Deming, American companies require nothing less than a transformation of management style and of governmental relations with industry. In Out of the Crisis, originally published in 1982, Deming offers a theory of management based on his famous 14 Points for Management. Management's failure to plan for the future, he claims, brings about loss of market, which brings about loss of jobs. Management must be judged not only by the quarterly dividend, but by innovative plans to stay in business, protect investment, ensure future dividends, and provide more jobs through improved product and service. In simple, direct language, he explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them.

TL;DR: A generalized framework for decision analysis is proposed to highlight the fundamental ingredients for more structured and tractable environmental decision making.
Abstract: Decision making in environmental projects can be complex and seemingly intractable, principally because of the inherent trade-offs between sociopolitical, environmental, ecological, and economic factors. The selection of appropriate remedial and abatement strategies for contaminated sites, land use planning, and regulatory processes often involves multiple additional criteria such as the distribution of costs and benefits, environmental impacts for different populations, safety, ecological risk, or human values. Some of these criteria cannot be easily condensed into a monetary value, partly because environmental concerns often involve ethical and moral principles that may not be related to any economic use or value. Furthermore, even if it were possible to aggregate multiple criteria rankings into a common unit, this approach would not always be desirable because the ability to track conflicting stakeholder preferences may be lost in the process. Consequently, selecting from among many different alternatives often involves making trade-offs that fail to satisfy 1 or more stakeholder groups. Nevertheless, considerable research in the area of multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) has made available practical methods for applying scientific decision theoretical approaches to complex multicriteria problems. This paper presents a review of the available literature and provides recommendations for applying MCDA techniques in environmental projects. A generalized framework for decision analysis is proposed to highlight the fundamental ingredients for more structured and tractable environmental decision making.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue for empirical exibility with respect to the choice of transformation for the RTs, and advocate minimal a-priori data trimming, combined with model criticism.
Abstract: Reaction times (RTs) are an important source of information in experimental psychology. Classical methodological considerations pertaining to the statistical analysis of RT data are optimized for analyses of aggregated data, based on subject or item means (c.f., Forster & Dickinson, 1976). Mixed-effects modeling (see, e.g., Baayen, Davidson, & Bates, 2008) does not require prior aggregation and allows the researcher the more ambitious goal of predicting individual responses. Mixed-modeling calls for a reconsideration of the classical methodological strategies for analysing rts. In this study, we argue for empirical exibility with respect to the choice of transformation for the RTs. We advocate minimal a-priori data trimming, combined with model criticism. We also show how trial-to-trial, longitudinal dependencies between individual observations can be brought into the statistical model. These strategies are illustrated for a large dataset with a non-trivial random-effects structure. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of interactions involving fixed-effect factors that partition the levels sampled by random-effect factors.
