The Persistently Variable “Background” Stratospheric Aerosol Layer and Global Climate Change
Stanley C. Solomon,Stanley C. Solomon,John S. Daniel,Ryan R. Neely,Jean-Paul Vernier,Jean-Paul Vernier,Ellsworth G. Dutton,Larry W. Thomason +7 more
TL;DR: An increase in the amount of aerosols in the stratosphere during the past decade has decreased the rate of global warming, and climate model projections neglecting these changes would continue to overestimate the radiative forcing and global warming in coming decades.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stratospheric Aerosol--Observations, Processes, and Impact on Climate
Stefanie Kremser,Larry W. Thomason,Marc von Hobe,Markus Hermann,Terry Deshler,Claudia Timmreck,Matthew Toohey,Matthew Toohey,Andrea Stenke,Joshua P. Schwarz,Ralf Weigel,Stephan Fueglistaler,Fred Prata,Jean-Paul Vernier,Hans Schlager,John E. Barnes,Juan Carlos Antuña-Marrero,Duncan Fairlie,Mathias Palm,Emmanuel Mahieu,Justus Notholt,Markus Rex,Christine Bingen,Filip Vanhellemont,Adam Bourassa,John M. C. Plane,Daniel Klocke,Simon Carn,Lieven Clarisse,Thomas Trickl,Ryan R. Neely,Alexander D. James,Landon Rieger,James C. Wilson,Brian Meland +34 more
TL;DR: A review of the advances in stratospheric aerosol research can be found in this article, with a focus on the agreement between in situ and space-based inferences of aerosol properties during volcanically quiescent periods.
Journal ArticleDOI
Major influence of tropical volcanic eruptions on the stratospheric aerosol layer during the last decade
Jean-Paul Vernier,Jean-Paul Vernier,Larry W. Thomason,Jean-Pierre Pommereau,Adam Bourassa,Jacques Pelon,Anne Garnier,Alain Hauchecorne,L. Blanot,Charles R. Trepte,Doug Degenstein,Fabio Vargas +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the variability of stratospheric aerosol loading between 1985 and 2010 is explored with measurements from SAGE II, CALIPSO, GOMOS/ENVISAT, and OSIRIS/Odin space-based instruments.
Overview of IGAC/SPARC Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI) Community Simulations in Support of Upcoming Ozone and Climate Assessments
Veronika Eyring,Jean-Francois Lamarque,Peter Hess,Florian Xavier Arfeuille,Kevin W. Bowman,Martyn P. Chipperfiel,Bryan N. Duncan,Arlene M. Fiore,Andrew Gettelman,Marco Giorgetta,Claire Granier,Michaela I. Hegglin,Doug Kinnison,Markus Kunze,Ulrike Langematz,Beiping Luo,Randall V. Martin,Katja Matthes,Paul A. Newman,Thomas Peter,Alan Robock,T. B. Ryerson,Alfonso Saiz-Lopez,Ross J. Salawitch,Martin G. Schultz,Theodore G. Shepherd,Drew Shindell,Johannes Staehelin,Susann Tegtmeier,Larry W. Thomason,Simone Tilmes,Jean-Paul Vernier,Darryn W. Waugh,Paul Young +33 more
TL;DR: The CCMI has now been approved by both the IGAC and SPARC scientific steering committees at their respective steering committee meetings as discussed by the authors, superseding the SPARC Chemistry-Climate Model Validation (CCMVal) activity, expanding the goals and deliverables of CCMVal to include tropospheric chemistry-climate questions.
Journal ArticleDOI
CALIPSO detection of an Asian tropopause aerosol layer
TL;DR: The first four years of the CALIPSO lidar measurements have revealed the existence of an aerosol layer at the tropopause level associated with the Asian monsoon season in June, July and August as discussed by the authors.
