The birth of French labour sociology after the War: some reflections on the nature of the corporate state and intellectual engagement for the sociology of work in the UK today

Abstract: The controversies in French sociology of labour between 1945 and the early 60s sometimes overlook its place in the period of national reconstruction. As part of the social consensus marking reconstruction sociologists, encouraged by state fonctionnaires, sustained a research agenda perceived as ‘useful’ for national renewal: the focus would be on questions that sociologist-practitioners would share with France’s political class. While the state’s hegemonic project of social development through technological progress was manifest in similar methodological agendas in the oeuvre of two leading protagonists, nevertheless it allowed for radically different views of sociology’s role. This is of significance not just for the discipline’s researchers in France. It has relevance for a ‘public sociology’ of work in the UK in a period of conformist pressure.

Combien y a-t-il de souffrance au travail ?

Abstract: Ce texte engage un débat avec deux ouvrages de Christophe Dejours. Dans le premier de ceux-ci, Travail : usure mentale, l’auteur montraient comment les salariés résistent aux souffrances nées de leurs mauvaises conditions de travail, physiques ou psychiques : ils construisent des “stratégies défensives“ qui leur permettent de reprendre pied dans les situations difficiles. Dans le second ouvrage, Souffrance en France. La banalisation de l'injustice sociale, Dejours affirme que la généralisation du mal en entreprise et le développement des injustices reposent sur le consentement des salariés eux-mêmes : dominés symboliquement par un système social auquel ils participent activement, ils vivent dans la peur et acceptent pour eux et pour autrui la souffrance devenue pour ainsi dire “indépassable“.

The Palgrave Handbook of the Sociology of Work in Europe

Abstract: This book explores the key conceptual features of the development of the Sociology of Work (SoW) in Europe since 1945, using eleven country case studies. An original contribution to our understanding of the trajectory of the SoW, the chapters map the current state of the theoretical background of the sub-discipline's development to broader socio-political and economic changes, traced across a heterogeneous set of national contexts. Different definitions of the SoW in each country often reflect variations in the focus of analysis, and these chapters link the subject definition and focus to other social science disciplines, the state, as well as social class interests and ideologies. The book contends that the ways in which the sub-discipline makes sense of changes in work is itself a response to the type of society in which the sub-discipline is practiced, whether in the post-war social democratic West, the Soviet East, or today's societies, dominated by variant forms of neo-liberalism. It will be of use to scholars and students interested in the transnational history of the discipline of sociology, with a specific focus on the nexus between the sociology of labour, ideology, economics and politics.

Humanitarian Reason: A Moral History of the Present

Abstract: In the face of the world's disorders, moral concerns have provided a powerful ground for developing international as well as local policies. Didier Fassin draws on case materials from France, South Africa, Venezuela, and Palestine to explore the meaning of humanitarianism in the contexts of immigration and asylum, disease and poverty, disaster and war. He traces and analyzes recent shifts in moral and political discourse and practices - what he terms "humanitarian reason" - and shows in vivid examples how humanitarianism is confronted by inequality and violence. Deftly illuminating the tensions and contradictions in humanitarian government, he reveals the ambiguities confronting states and organizations as they struggle to deal with the intolerable. His critique of humanitarian reason, respectful of the participants involved but lucid about the stakes they disregard, offers theoretical and empirical foundations for a political and moral anthropology.

Consentement et subjectivité juridique : contribution à une théorie émotivo-rationnelle du droit

Abstract: Le consentement est probablement l'un des concepts les plus familiers aux juristes. Initiee a son fonctionnement des le debut des etudes du droit, par le prisme quasi exclusif du droit des obligations, la communaute juridique trouve dans celui-ci un moyen commode d'expliquer l'engagement individuel dans un ensemble de normes. Des lors, c'est par le consentement que l'on pourrait rendre compte de la volonte, c'est-a-dire de cet element subjectif qui permet l'application de la regle.Pourtant, apres une etude approfondie, deux elements au moins etonnent. Le premier tient a ce que la reflexion sur ce sujet est quantitativement faible. Le second, quant a lui, consiste dans le fait que la definition meme du terme de consentement est trop peu interrogee. Ce faisant, elle varie d'un auteur a l'autre avec toutefois un trait commun: le consentement est presque toujours pense comme detache de la personne qui en est l'auteur. Ainsi, on evite d'avoir a s'interroger sur l'acteur principal de l'ordre juridique.Malgre ses merites, cette vision abstraite est devenue trop excessive pour pouvoir demeurer en l'etat. L'absence de definition du concept a pour effet de faire emerger des usages nouveaux de ce dernier. On pensait avoir resolu la question de la subjectivite, et pourtant elle fait retour dans ses manifestations les plus concretes.Des lors, notre recherche consistera a essayer de trouver une definition du consentement, en faisant l'hypothese d'un retour fecond a ses origines. Grâce a cela, on pourra tenter de proposer une nouvelle comprehension du concept et de la subjectivite juridique, en integrant la dimension emotionnelle dans la reflexion sur le droit.

Recherches cliniques d’orientation psychanalytique dans le champ de l’éducation et de la formation

Abstract: Claudine Blanchard-Laville, Philippe Chaussecourte, Francoise Hatchuel, Bernard Pechberty -Klinische Untersuchungen mit psychoanalytischem Hintergrund im Gebiet der Erziehung und der Ausbildung. Die Autoren dieser synthetischen Arbeit nehmen sich vor, den Stand von den Forschungsarbeiten zu ermitteln, die im Gebiet der Erziehung und der Ausbildung seit 1987 veroffentlicht wurden und sich auf eine klinische Perspektive mit psychoanalytischem Hintergrund beziehen. Diese Forschungsarbeit erfolgt sich aus der synthetischen Arbeit, die damals in der Revue Francaise de Pedagogie erschienen ist und von der Bildung jenes Spezialforschungsgebietes gezeugt hat im Hinblick auf das, was S. Freud schon 1913 behauptet hat, namlich dass Psychoanalyse von grosem Interesse fur die Padagogik sein kann. Im ersten Teil des Artikels haben wir die Entwicklung jener Perspektive in den zwei letzten Jahrzehnten analysiert und wir haben sie im Rahmen der umfassenderen Entwicklung des sozialen Kontexts und der gleichzeitigen Entwicklung der Psychoanalyse situiert. Es hat uns dazu gefuhrt, mehrere Punkte uber die Epistemologie jener Forschungsarbeiten zu erortern. Im zweiten Teil des Artikels bieten wir einen Uberblick uber Forschungsarbeiten, die wir unter drei Rubriken zusammengestellt haben: "das Kind”, "das Verhaltnis zum Wissen”, und "Gruppen-Institutionen-Organisationen”, denn wir haben gemeint, sie stellen organisatorische und/ oder ordnende Begriffe in diesem Gebiet dar.

Valores organizacionais e prazer-sofrimento no trabalho

Abstract: O artigo discute as relacoes entre valores organizacionais e as vivencias de prazer-sofrimento no trabalho. Os valores estao definidos como principios que guiam a vida da organizacao e estao estruturados em tres dimensoes bipolares: autonomia-conservacao, estrutura igualitaria-hierarquia e harmonia-dominio. O prazer-sofrimento e estudado como um constructo dialetico, sendo definido como vivencias de sentimentos de valorizacao, reconhecimento e desgaste no trabalho. A pesquisa foi realizada numa empresa publica de abastecimento e saneamento com 554 empregados. Foram aplicadas escalas para medir os valores organizacionais e o prazer-sofrimento, tendo sido os dados analisados por meio de estatistica descritiva e correlacoes bivariadas. Os resultados indicaram uma preponderância das vivencias de prazer, sendo o sofrimento vivenciado moderadamente. O prazer esta correlacionado com quatro polos dos valores organizacionais: autonomia, estrutura igualitaria, harmonia e dominio. O sofrimento apresenta correlacao negativa com o polo da autonomia, estrutura igualitaria e dominio.
