Good Days, Bad Days: The Self in Chronic Illness and Time

The basic tenets of palliative care may be summarized as the goal of
helping patients to die with dignity. The term "dignity" provides an overarching
framework that may guide the physician, patient, and family in defining the
objectives and therapeutic considerations fundamental to end-of-life care.
Dignity-conserving care is care that may conserve or bolster the dignity of
dying patients. Using segments of interviews with a patient with advanced
lung cancer, his wife, and his palliative care physician, this article illustrates
and explores various aspects of dignity-conserving care and the model on which
it is based. Dignity-conserving care offers an approach that clinicians can
use to explicitly target the maintenance of dignity as a therapeutic objective
and as a principle of bedside care for patients nearing death.

Public spaces allow people to meet on ostensibly neutral ground, within the context of the whole community. This report draws on a unique study of nine public spaces within one English town viewed across a whole year, carried out by a large team of local observers working alongside academics. The report: 
- describes the use of green, commercial and civic spaces, and local neighbourhoods;
-investigates interactivity within and between people of different age groups; 
-highlights self-regulation as an essential element of the management of public spaces;
-considers the role of reputation in the perception of particular places;
-discusses public involvement in regeneration and the democratising of public places.

Social interactions in urban public places

This article outlines the development and implementation of participatory research methodology centred on observational techniques. It discusses theoretical understandings of the methodology and how it works in practice. The research explored the use of public spaces by different social, ethnic and activity groups across the course of a 12‐month period, drawing on the experiences of, and data collected by local non‐academic researchers who were trained in a non‐participatory semi‐structured observation method. The article discusses how this method was developed and implemented and considers some of the issues around how participatory research works in practice.

About the book: This book focuses on what happens after a death has taken place. Drawing on social theory and anthropology, contributors examine responses to death as they occur within the unique set of cultural, social and historical circumstances which characterizes post-war society. The book does not just document and make sense of contemporary practices but also critically reviews the ways grief, mourning and death ritual have been approached by academics and practitioners in the field. It does this by combining substantial reviews with shorter illustrative examples of grief, mourning and death ritual as they are manifest in specific settings and with defined groups. These illustrative examples include personal and institutional responses to death at different points in the life cycle, and responses to different sorts of death - the death of children and death in disasters for example. The examples include commentaries on bereavement work and on changes in both the funeral industry and memorialization practices.

Grief, Mourning and Death Ritual is aimed at advanced students in sociology, anthropology and psychology with an interest in death, dying and mortality. It is also directly relevant to those concerned with loss and how to respond to it. The book is therefore suitable for use on courses in nursing, palliative care, social work and counselling.
