Abstract: Bounds on average power transfer over a near-field optical path through atmospheric turbulence are used to deduce bounds on the sift and error probabilities of a free-space quantum-key distribution system that uses the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol. It is shown that atmospheric turbulence imposes at most a modest decrease in the sift probability and a modest increase in the conditional probability of error given that a sift event has occurred.

Abstract: We investigate the sensing of a data-carrying Gaussian beacon on a separate wavelength as a means to provide the information necessary to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence on orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization-multiplexed beams in a free-space optical link. The influence of the Gaussian beacon's wavelength on the compensation of the OAM beams at 1560 nm is experimentally studied. It is found that the compensation performance degrades slowly with the increase in the beacon's wavelength offset, in the 1520-1590 nm band, from the OAM beams. Using this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate a 1 Tbit/s OAM and polarization-multiplexed link through emulated dynamic turbulence with a data-carrying beacon at 1550 nm. The experimental results show that the turbulence effects on all 10 data channels, each carrying a 100 Gbit/s signal, are mitigated efficiently, and the power penalties after compensation are below 5.9 dB for all channels. The results of our work might be helpful for the future implementation of a high-capacity OAM, polarization and wavelength-multiplexed free-space optical link that is affected by atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract: The architecture proposed by Duan, Lukin, Cirac, and Zoller (DLCZ) for long-distance quantum communication with atomic ensembles is analyzed. Its fidelity and throughput in entanglement distribution, entanglement swapping, and quantum teleportation is derived within a framework that accounts for multiple excitations in the ensembles as well as loss and asymmetries in the channel. The DLCZ performance metrics that are obtained are compared to the corresponding results for the trapped-atom quantum communication architecture that has been proposed by a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Northwestern University (MIT and NU). Both systems are found to be capable of high-fidelity entanglement distribution. However, the DLCZ scheme only provides conditional teleportation and repeater operation, whereas the MIT-NU architecture affords full Bell-state measurements on its trapped atoms. Moreover, it is shown that achieving unity conditional fidelity in DLCZ teleportation and repeater operation requires ideal photon-number resolving detectors. The maximum conditional fidelities for DLCZ teleportation and repeater operation that can be realized with nonresolving detectors are 1/2 and 2/3, respectively.

Abstract: We have observed oscillation in the wings of the Doppler-broadened sodium D lines when they are pumped by a cw dye laser and enclosed in an optical cavity. The oscillation is blue (red) detuned from the pump laser by the ground-state hyperfine splitting of sodium when the pump-laser frequency is in the blue (red) wing. The gain mechanism is explained on the basis of optical pumping and stimulated Raman scattering.

Abstract: This article describes observations made during a recent series of single-mode lasercom experiments in which high-rate data transmission was demonstrated between a small aircraft and a ground station separated by distances up to 80 km. A significant result of the subsequent data analysis was the discovery of near-unity correlations between the signal fluctuations observed by power monitors at the two ends of the link. This evidence of reciprocity is presented, along with the description of a preliminary concept for utilizing this channel state information to improve link performance.

Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Abstract: On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory simultaneously observed a transient gravitational-wave signal. The signal sweeps upwards in frequency from 35 to 250 Hz with a peak gravitational-wave strain of 1.0×10(-21). It matches the waveform predicted by general relativity for the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes and the ringdown of the resulting single black hole. The signal was observed with a matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 24 and a false alarm rate estimated to be less than 1 event per 203,000 years, equivalent to a significance greater than 5.1σ. The source lies at a luminosity distance of 410(-180)(+160) Mpc corresponding to a redshift z=0.09(-0.04)(+0.03). In the source frame, the initial black hole masses are 36(-4)(+5)M⊙ and 29(-4)(+4)M⊙, and the final black hole mass is 62(-4)(+4)M⊙, with 3.0(-0.5)(+0.5)M⊙c(2) radiated in gravitational waves. All uncertainties define 90% credible intervals. These observations demonstrate the existence of binary stellar-mass black hole systems. This is the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black hole merger.
