TL;DR: A system and method of the present invention allow users to access, manage, and edit information about content data, often referred to as metadata as discussed by the authors, which is collected from various sources, added, and maintained in a metadata database.
Abstract: A system and method of the present invention allow users to access, manage, and edit information about content data, often referred to as metadata. Metadata is collected from various sources, added, and maintained in a metadata database. In addition, metadata is dynamically read from the metadata database and dynamically displayed in a graphical user interface in an organized manner, such as a hierarchical tree. In the graphical user interface, a user may add, delete, and/or modify the metadata. As the user changes the metadata, the metadata database is updated and the user's changes are propagated throughout the graphical user interface such that the hierarchical tree is displays the changed metadata.

TL;DR: In this article, a graphical resizing overlay is superimposed over the windowpane to facilitate arbitrary resizing of the window pane and corresponding video content by the user when the cursor is positioned over the viewport.
Abstract: In one embodiment, video content is rendered within a windowpane displayed upon graphical user interface (GUI), a curser is positioned within the GUI responsive to user input, and a graphical resizing overlay is superimposed over the windowpane to facilitate arbitrary resizing of the windowpane and corresponding video content by the user when the cursor is positioned over the windowpane. In another aspect of the invention, an application window including at least a first windowpane and a second windowpane is displayed within a GUI, video content having a first display size is rendered within the first windowpane, the first windowpane and the corresponding video content is resized by a first amount resulting in a second display size, and the second windowpane is dynamically resized by a second amount proportional to the first amount such that the video content remains unobstructed by the first and second windowpanes and the application window.

TL;DR: In this article, a media server communicates with a media presentation system, such as a media player for streaming video and audio, to present subscription and non-subscription media to the user of the presentation system.
Abstract: Methods and system deliver media to users of media presentation systems. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a media server communicates with a media presentation system, such as a media player for streaming video and audio, to present subscription and non-subscription media to the user of the media presentation system. Subscription media may include multi-tiered media packages and individual media offerings as selected by the user. The media may be presented in various formats, including video, a graphical display, an audio presentation, a graphical and audio presentation, URL links, and interactive windows. Information about the user, the user's subscription status, the user's media presentation system and information about the media providers and the media offered by the media providers are maintained by the media server. The media server updates the foregoing information in accordance with the interaction between the media server, the users of media presentation systems, and the media providers.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for utilizing metadata created either at a central location for shared use by connected users, or at each individual user's location, to enhance user's enjoyment of available broadcast programming content is presented.
Abstract: A system for utilizing metadata created either at a central location for shared use by connected users, or at each individual user's location, to enhance user's enjoyment of available broadcast programming content. A variety of mechanisms are employed for automatically and manually identifying and designating programming segments, associating descriptive metadata which the identified segments, distributing the metadata for use at client locations, and using the supplied metadata to selectively record and playback desired programming.

TL;DR: The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of metadata for another type of a file as discussed by the authors, and the metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured and the captured metadata is searched.
Abstract: Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata. In one exemplary method, metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured, and the captured metadata is searched. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method for filtering and organizing items from computer memories based on common elements is presented, which exposes regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical file system structure on the disk.
Abstract: A system and method for filtering and organizing items from computer memories based on common elements. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, filters are provided for manipulating the items. The filters are essentially tools for narrowing down a set of items. In one embodiment, the filters are dynamically generated based on the properties of the separate items. The system utilizes virtual folders. The virtual folders expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, quick links are provided. In one embodiment, quick links are a set of predefined links (e.g., located on the left side of the display) that can be clicked on to generate useful views of the sets of items. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, libraries are provided. Libraries consist of large groups of usable types of items that can be associated together.

TL;DR: In this paper, improved techniques for interaction between a host computer and a media player are discussed, such as automatic synchronization of media contents stored on the media player with media contents on the host computer.
Abstract: Improved techniques for interaction between a host computer (e.g., personal computer) and a media player are disclosed. According to one aspect, interaction between a host computer and a media player, such as automatic synchronization of media contents stored on a media player with media contents stored on a host computer, can be restricted. According to another aspect, management of media items residing on a media player can be performed at and by a host computer for the media player. According to still another aspect, media content can be played by a media player in accordance with quality settings established for the media content at the host computer.

TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchically ordered graphical user interface is presented for a portable multimedia device, and a method, apparatus, and system for providing user supplied configuration data are described, where a first order, or home, interface provides a highest order of user selectable items each of which, when selected, results in a lower order user interface associated with the selected item.
Abstract: In a portable multimedia device, a method, apparatus, and system for providing user supplied configuration data are described. In one embodiment, a hierarchically ordered graphical user interface are provided. A first order, or home, interface provides a highest order of user selectable items each of which, when selected, results in an automatic transition to a lower order user interface associated with the selected item. In one of the described embodiments, the lower order interface includes other user selectable items associated with the previously selected item from the higher order user interface.
