TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the Liberation Theology of Gustavo Gutierrez in relation to the Catholic Church's Social Teaching, whether the experience of poverty and crisis is part of the socio-spiritual responsibility of the church.
Abstract: In a world where everything seems to be measured in reference to money and economic progress, the problem of poverty becomes an increasingly urgent concern. The experience of poverty is even becoming problematic when the world seemed to be unprepared for times of pandemic. COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the suffering of the poor more than just a health risk, especially in the Philippine setting. In such a situation, people wonder, where is the church? Most critics of the Catholic Church in the Philippines utilized the social media platform in crying out their denunciation to Catholic Church leaders. It is in this context that the paper explores the ‘Liberation Theology’ of Gustavo Gutierrez in relation to the Catholic Church’s Social Teaching, whether the experience of poverty and crisis is part of the socio-spiritual responsibility of the church. To do this, the paper utilized the exploratory method of textual analysis. Through examining the text of extant literature on Gustavo Gutierrez’s Liberation Theology and the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church, the paper constructed a holistic understanding of “Preferential Option for the Poor.” The arguments presented in this paper could serve as the basis for current praxis of the different catholic congregations in the Philippines in mitigating the experience of crisis among Filipino poor amid COVID-19 pandemic.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed the experiences of volunteers and beneficiaries of the AGAK Foundation, Inc., using a qualitative descriptive research design to understand how the community dynamically behaves overtime, and highlighted the need to address the different yet interrelated sustainable development goals by proposing an appropriate community extension service thereafter.
Abstract: Community-academe partnership is a pragmatic effort to promote social responsibility by implementing sustainable development goals set by the United Nations Development Programme. On the one hand, a religious community-based organization like the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Roque Parish provides not only spiritual nourishment but also delivers socio-economic sustainability programs for impoverished members. On the other hand, an academic community like Cebu Technological University as a higher learning institution participates in nation-building by knowledge and resources sharing through community extension service. This paper assessed through unveiling the multi-faceted experiences of volunteers and beneficiaries of AGAK Foundation, Inc., using a qualitative descriptive research design. Exploration and understanding of the experiences of stakeholders generate a holistic picture of how the community dynamically behaves overtime. The study expedited the identification and assessment of the community's needs, which is a salient procedure in crafting a community extension service in the case of higher learning institutions in the Philippines. The result exposed emerging themes: a.) the genesis of AGAK Foundation, Inc.; b.) the various services it offered; c.) the pressing concerns of the adult-beneficiaries; and d.) the prevailing challenges encountered by the organization. Discussion of the themes furthered the need to address the different yet interrelated sustainable development goals by proposing an appropriate community extension service thereafter.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors used the neutrosophic decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method to model these factors in the case of public universities in the Philippines.
Abstract: While teaching quality has been widely studied, this work advances the domain literature by evaluating the factors influencing teaching quality in order to determine their causal relationships and eventually identify those crucial factors. With ten factors obtained from a comprehensive review of literature, the neutrosophic decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method is used to model these factors in the case of public universities in the Philippines. The DEMATEL handles the causal relationships among factors of teaching quality, while the vagueness associated with domain experts eliciting judgments within the DEMATEL is modeled in single-valued neutrosophic numbers. Findings reveal that individual characteristics, psychological characteristics, and institutional culture are key factors of teaching quality, while institutional resources and student composition are minor key factors. Higher education institutions (HEIs) must pay more attention to these factors in designing different initiatives, as they are crucial in shaping teaching quality. These findings offer important insights for HEIs in their recruitment and hiring decisions, strategic road mapping for building an institutional culture that values teaching quality, establishing student composition schemes, and resource allocation decisions for promoting institutional resources that drive teaching quality initiatives. Some policy takeaways and avenues for future works are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined teacher education students' stress experience and strategies to cope with the demands related to their pre-teaching evaluation performance, and proposed an intervention plan for adoption.
Abstract: This paper examined teacher-education students' stress experience and strategies to cope with the demands related to their pre-teaching evaluation performance. It employed a quantitative research design (descriptive-correlation) through the use of two standardized survey questionnaires, the Stress Survey Questionnaire (SSQ) and Student's Coping Scale (SCS), in collecting the needed data for inferential analysis. The respondents of this research were 135 teacher-education students of a public higher education institution in the province of Cebu, Philippines. The respondents were solicited via a purposive random sampling technique. This paper found that most teacher-education students had a very satisfactory performance relative to their pre-teaching performance evaluation. Differing from the existing literature, the respondents experienced a moderate level of stress while fairly utilizing unhealthy means to cope with the demand in school. Results further revealed that the stress experienced by respondents relates to their coping strategies. In contrast, both stress experienced and coping strategies do not relate to the pre-teaching performance of the respondents. Based on the findings and conclusion, this paper proposed an intervention plan for adoption. Received: 10 July 2021 / Accepted: 23 September 2021 / Published: 5 November 2021

TL;DR: Prolonged viral shedding provides the rationale for a strategy of isolation of infected patients and optimal antiviral interventions in the future.
Abstract: Summary Background Since December, 2019, Wuhan, China, has experienced an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported but risk factors for mortality and a detailed clinical course of illness, including viral shedding, have not been well described. Methods In this retrospective, multicentre cohort study, we included all adult inpatients (≥18 years old) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital (Wuhan, China) who had been discharged or had died by Jan 31, 2020. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data, including serial samples for viral RNA detection, were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between survivors and non-survivors. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with in-hospital death. Findings 191 patients (135 from Jinyintan Hospital and 56 from Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital) were included in this study, of whom 137 were discharged and 54 died in hospital. 91 (48%) patients had a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most common (58 [30%] patients), followed by diabetes (36 [19%] patients) and coronary heart disease (15 [8%] patients). Multivariable regression showed increasing odds of in-hospital death associated with older age (odds ratio 1·10, 95% CI 1·03–1·17, per year increase; p=0·0043), higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (5·65, 2·61–12·23; p Interpretation The potential risk factors of older age, high SOFA score, and d-dimer greater than 1 μg/mL could help clinicians to identify patients with poor prognosis at an early stage. Prolonged viral shedding provides the rationale for a strategy of isolation of infected patients and optimal antiviral interventions in the future.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted an Internet search of an estimated 179 nonprofit hospitals in Texas conducted between December 1, 2013, and January 5, 2014, and identified and reviewed 95 CHNA and implementation strategies reports.
Abstract: OBJECTIVES We sought a better understanding of how nonprofit hospitals are fulfilling the community health needs assessment (CHNA) provision of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to conduct CHNAs and develop CHNA and implementation strategies reports. METHODS Through an Internet search of an estimated 179 nonprofit hospitals in Texas conducted between December 1, 2013, and January 5, 2014, we identified and reviewed 95 CHNA and implementation strategies reports. We evaluated and scored reports with specific criteria. We analyzed hospital-related and other report characteristics to understand relationships with report quality. RESULTS There was wide-ranging diversity in CHNA approaches and report quality. Consultant-led CHNA processes and collaboration with local health departments were associated with higher-quality reports. CONCLUSIONS At the time of this study, the Internal Revenue Service had not yet issued the final regulations for the CHNA requirement. This provides an opportunity to strengthen the CHNA guidance for the final regulations, clarify the purpose of the assessment and planning process and reports, and better align assessment and planning activities through a public health framework.

TL;DR: The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program has been much maligned and dismissed as a “dole-out” program by critics as discussed by the authors, who believe that the grants would just be wasted on vices (e.g., alcohol, cigarettes, even drugs) instead of human capital formation (education and health of the children).
Abstract: The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program has been much maligned and dismissed as a “dole-out” program. Critics have focused on the fact that it provides cash grants directly to poor families, believing it would promote the culture of mendicancy and dependence. Others believe that the grants would just be wasted on vices (perhaps alcohol, cigarettes, even drugs) instead of human capital formation (education and health of the children). Stereotyping of the poor prevented society from providing meaningful support in the past by refusing to understand their situation. It turns out that both of these have been proven unfounded by rigorous program evaluations, showing no impact on work effort of beneficiaries nor on expenditure on vice goods. In addition, data show that the poor do respond correctly to incentives of highlighting the importance of investing in the human capital of their children even if returns from such investments are farther away than what usually is their immediate concern. Given the evidence, should we not let Pantawid Pamilya provide us a more nuanced view about the poor that is empirically based so that we can be more effective in assisting them?
