TL;DR: A systematic, general approach for sustainability assessment and design selection through integrating hard (quantitative) economic and environmental indicators along with soft (qualitative) indicators for social criteria into design activities is presented.
Abstract: In chemical and allied industries, process design sustainability has gained public concern in academia, industry, government agencies, and social groups. Over the past decade, a variety of sustainability indicators have been introduced, but with various challenges in application. It becomes clear that the industries need urgently practical tools for conducting systematic sustainability assessment on existing processes and/or new designs and, further, for helping derive the most desirable design decisions. This paper presents a systematic, general approach for sustainability assessment and design selection through integrating hard (quantitative) economic and environmental indicators along with soft (qualitative) indicators for social criteria into design activities. The approach contains four modules: a process simulator module, an equipment and inventory acquisition module, a sustainability assessment module, and a decision support module. The modules fully utilize and extend the capabilities of the process simulator Aspen Plus, Aspen Simulation Workbook, and a spreadsheet, where case model development, data acquisition and analysis, team contribution assessment, and decision support are effectively integrated. The efficacy of the introduced approach is illustrated by the example of biodiesel process design, where insightful sustainability analysis and persuasive decision support show its superiority over commonly practiced technoeconomy evaluation approaches.

TL;DR: In this paper, the separation of the homogeneous azeotropic mixture acetonitrile/water by pressure swing distillation (PSD) is considered, and two basic batch modes, regular and inverted, are investigated.
Abstract: The separation of the homogeneous azeotropic mixture acetonitrile/water by pressure swing distillation (PSD) is considered. In this work, the PSD is operated as a discontinuous (batch) process and two basic batch modes, regular and inverted, are investigated. The processes are analysed and a rigorous dynamic model for both batch PSD processes is formulated. The model takes a cold and empty column as an initial condition. Because of the lack of experimental data, in particular for the inverted batch distillation new experiments were carried out. The regular and the inverted batch PSD consist of two steps, a low pressure and a high pressure run, and experimental results are shown for each step. The simulations fit the experiments with good accuracy. Using the validated model, a simulation study to discuss different batch processes is carried out and an alternative inverted batch process is proposed.

TL;DR: This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for "experimenters") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment.
Abstract: THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. TL;DR: In this article, cross-correlation methods of interrogation of successive single-exposure frames can be used to measure the separation of pairs of particle images between successive frames, which can be optimized in terms of spatial resolution, detection rate, accuracy and reliability.
Abstract: To improve the performance of particle image velocimetry in measuring instantaneous velocity fields, direct cross-correlation of image fields can be used in place of auto-correlation methods of interrogation of double- or multiple-exposure recordings. With improved speed of photographic recording and increased resolution of video array detectors, cross-correlation methods of interrogation of successive single-exposure frames can be used to measure the separation of pairs of particle images between successive frames. By knowing the extent of image shifting used in a multiple-exposure and by a priori knowledge of the mean flow-field, the cross-correlation of different sized interrogation spots with known separation can be optimized in terms of spatial resolution, detection rate, accuracy and reliability.

TL;DR: The results of this study indicated that in 2013 scholars have published articles more than in other years, and energy, environment and sustainability were ranked as the first areas that have applied MCDM techniques and approaches.
Abstract: Multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) is considered as a complex decision-making (DM) tool involving both quantitative and qualitative factors. In recent years, several MCDM techniques and approaches have been suggested to choosing the optimal probable options. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the applications and methodologies of the MCDM techniques and approaches. This study reviewed a total of 393 articles published from 2000 to 2014 in more than 120 peer reviewed journals (extracted from Web of Science). According to experts’ opinion, these articles were grouped into 15 fields. Furthermore, these articles were categorised based on authors, publication date, name of journals, methods, tools, and type of research (MCDM utilising research, MCDM developing research, and MCDM proposing research). The results of this study indicated that in 2013 scholars have published articles more than in other years. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method in the individual tool...
