20 Sep 2016TL;DR: In this article, an E-beam firing bar is used to drive staples on each side of the cut in a surgical severing and stapling instrument, which is suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil.
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

01 Aug 2007TL;DR: A pneumatically powered drive system can be configured to selectively apply at least a firing force to the firing mechanism of a pneumatically-powered tool of sufficient magnitude to cause the fire mechanism to move from the unactuated position to the actuated position in response to a flow of gas from a source of gas that is fluidically coupled to the pneumaticallypowered drive system as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A surgical instrument for use in connection with a pneumatically powered tool having a firing mechanism operably supported therein that is movable between an unactuated position and an actuated position. A pneumatically powered drive system operably communicates with the pneumatically powered tool and is configured to selectively apply at least a firing force to the firing mechanism of the pneumatically powered tool of sufficient magnitude to cause the firing mechanism to move from the unactuated position to the actuated position in response to a flow of gas from a source of gas that is fluidically coupled to the pneumatically powered drive system. At least one feedback device communicates with the pneumatically powered drive system for providing feedback concerning at least one of: (a) the magnitude of the firing force as the pneumatically powered drive system moves the firing mechanism from the unactuated to actuated position; and (b) a relative position of the firing mechanism as the firing mechanism is moved between the unactuated and actuated positions.

30 Jan 2007TL;DR: In this article, a surgical cutting and fastening instrument is described, which includes an end effector comprising a moveable cutting instrument for cutting an object positioned in the end-effector.
Abstract: A surgical cutting and fastening instrument is disclosed. According to various embodiments, the instrument includes an end effector comprising a moveable cutting instrument for cutting an object positioned in the end effector, a main drive shaft assembly connected to the end effector, and a handle connected to the main drive shaft assembly. The handle includes a gear drive train connected to the main drive shaft assembly, a main motor for actuating the gear drive train, and a firing trigger such that retraction of the firing trigger causes actuation of the motor. Also, the rotational position of the firing trigger is related to the position of the cutting instrument in the end effector.

26 Jun 2007TL;DR: In this paper, a power source for a pneumatically powered device with a material storage member that is fluidically coupled to a gas driven device is described. But the power source is not specified.
Abstract: A surgical instrument for use in connection with a pneumatically powered tool. IN various embodiments, the instrument include a drive system that is configured to apply at least one actuation motion to the pneumatically powered tool upon receipt of a flow of gas under pressure. The instrument may further comprise a material storage member that is fluidically coupled to the drive system. The material storage member may contain a material in a first non-gaseous state that selectively vaporizes into the gas under pressure upon actuation of the drive system. A power source for a gas driven device is also disclosed. In various embodiments, the power source comprises a material storage member that is fluidically coupled to the gas driven device. The material storage member contains a material having a first non-gaseous state and which selectively vaporizes into a gas under pressure upon actuation of the gas driven device.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surgical stapling device for applying an array of surgical staples to tissue is provided, which includes an approximation mechanism for moving a cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly between spaced and approximated positions and a firing mechanism for ejecting the array of staples from the cartridge assembly.
Abstract: A surgical stapling device for applying an array of surgical staples to tissue is provided. The stapling device includes an approximation mechanism for moving a cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly between spaced and approximated positions and a firing mechanism for ejecting the array of staples from the cartridge assembly. A single trigger is operable to effect approximation and firing of the device. The device also includes an alignment pin assembly which can be selectively manually or automatically advanced. The anvil assembly includes a stiffener plate which allows the device to have a reduced head portion profile.
