Abstract: By any standard, this was a remarkable conference. We have had a tour of a large and bold frontier. It is a frontier that is of the first importance both in life and in theory. It is defined by a very practical set of questions that have now begun to find a theoretical formulation. In these chapters: participants have asked whether you can help people to think better, to plan better, to monitor and evaluate what they are doing more than they had done before? Indeed, can you lead them with benefit to reflect upon what they are doing and thinking in such away that they might formulate their goals better? All these questions are familiar in applied psychology. Now they have become part of mainstream psychologyunder the rubric of metacognition. The shade of William James is at rest today!
