Abstract: This paper proposes two schemes for indoor positioning by fusing Bluetooth beacons and a pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) technique to provide meter-level positioning without additional infrastructure. As to the PDR approach, a more effective multi-threshold step detection algorithm is used to improve the positioning accuracy. According to pedestrians’ different walking patterns such as walking or running, this paper makes a comparative analysis of multiple step length calculation models to determine a linear computation model and the relevant parameters. In consideration of the deviation between the real heading and the value of the orientation sensor, a heading estimation method with real-time compensation is proposed, which is based on a Kalman filter with map geometry information. The corrected heading can inhibit the positioning error accumulation and improve the positioning accuracy of PDR. Moreover, this paper has implemented two positioning approaches integrated with Bluetooth and PDR. One is the PDR-based positioning method based on map matching and position correction through Bluetooth. There will not be too much calculation work or too high maintenance costs using this method. The other method is a fusion calculation method based on the pedestrians’ moving status (direct movement or making a turn) to determine adaptively the noise parameters in an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) system. This method has worked very well in the elimination of various phenomena, including the “go and back” phenomenon caused by the instability of the Bluetooth-based positioning system and the “cross-wall” phenomenon due to the accumulative errors caused by the PDR algorithm. Experiments performed on the fourth floor of the School of Environmental Science and Spatial Informatics (SESSI) building in the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) campus showed that the proposed scheme can reliably achieve a 2-meter precision.

Abstract: A speed trajectory profile indicating the authorized train speed at each position can be used to guide the driver or the automatic train operation (ATO) system to operate the train more efficiently, which is the most important part of the Chinese Train Control System (CTCS) and will decide the safety and efficiency of train operation. The efforts produced by the train to follow the speed trajectory will directly affect the evaluation of train operation. This paper studies the optimization approach for the speed trajectory of high-speed train in a single section. First, we take the energy consumption as the measure of satisfaction of the railway company, and the trip time is being regarded as the passenger satisfaction criterion; then, we present optimal speed trajectory searching strategies under different track characteristics by dividing the section into some subsections according to different speed limitations. After that, we develop a multiobjective optimization model for the speed trajectory, which is subject to the constraints such as safety requirement, track profiles, passenger comfort, and the dynamic performance. For obtaining the Pareto frontier of train speed trajectory, which has equal satisfaction degree on all the objects, a hybrid evolutionary algorithm is designed and applied to solve the model based on the differential evolution and simulating annealing algorithms. By showing some numerical results of simulations, the efficiency of the proposed model and solution methodology is illustrated.

Abstract: Cooperative localization of the connected vehicles is significant for many advanced intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication using dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) has great potential to enhance global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) for the capability of cooperative localization. In the integration of DSRC and GNSS, the tolerance against the unknown and time-varying observation conditions is a key factor to fulfill the requirements of several specific ITS applications. Under a GNSS/DSRC integrated architecture for cooperative localization, a novel robust cubature Kalman filter (CKF) is proposed in this paper to improve the performance of the data fusion under uncertain sensor observation environments. In the proposed solution, the structure of the standard CKF is enhanced using the Huber M-estimation technique, in which the original measurement update in the CKF is modified considering the probable anomalies in state estimation. Furthermore, based on the investigation of the adjustment effect from the constraint factor, an adaptive strategy for this parameter is introduced to optimize the performance comprehensively. The proposed method is validated using a specific simulation system. Results of experiment and simulations demonstrate the capability of improving the robustness and adaptive performance over the original filters under the unknown operation conditions.

Abstract: This paper investigates a tightly-coupled Global Position System (GPS)/Ultra-Wideband (UWB)/Inertial Navigation System (INS) cooperative positioning scheme using a Robust Kalman Filter (RKF) supported by V2I communication. The scheme proposes a method that uses range measurements of UWB units transmitted among the terminals as augmentation inputs of the observations. The UWB range inputs are used to reform the GPS observation equations that consist of pseudo-range and Doppler measurements and the updated observation equation is processed in a tightly-coupled GPS/UWB/INS integrated positioning equation using an adaptive Robust Kalman Filter. The result of the trial conducted on the roof of the Nottingham Geospatial Institute (NGI) at the University of Nottingham shows that the integrated solution provides better accuracy and improves the availability of the system in GPS denied environments. RKF can eliminate the effects of gross errors. Additionally, the internal and external reliabilities of the system are enhanced when the UWB observables received from the moving terminals are involved in the positioning algorithm.

Abstract: The integration of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) has been very actively studied and widely applied for many years. Some sensors and artificial intelligence methods have been applied to handle GPS outages in GPS/INS integrated navigation. However, the integrated system using the above method still results in seriously degraded navigation solutions over long GPS outages. To deal with the problem, this paper presents a GPS/INS/odometer integrated system using a fuzzy neural network (FNN) for land vehicle navigation applications. Provided that the measurement type of GPS and odometer is the same, the topology of a FNN used in a GPS/INS/odometer integrated system is constructed. The information from GPS, odometer and IMU is input into a FNN system for network training during signal availability, while the FNN model receives the observations from IMU and odometer to generate odometer velocity correction to enhance resolution accuracy over long GPS outages. An actual experiment was performed to validate the new algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed method can improve the position, velocity and attitude accuracy of the integrated system, especially the position parameters, over long GPS outages.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive presentation and interpretation of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) and its numerical implementation. The EnKF has a large user group, and numerous publications have discussed applications and theoretical aspects of it. This paper reviews the important results from these studies and also presents new ideas and alternative interpretations which further explain the success of the EnKF. In addition to providing the theoretical framework needed for using the EnKF, there is also a focus on the algorithmic formulation and optimal numerical implementation. A program listing is given for some of the key subroutines. The paper also touches upon specific issues such as the use of nonlinear measurements, in situ profiles of temperature and salinity, and data which are available with high frequency in time. An ensemble based optimal interpolation (EnOI) scheme is presented as a cost-effective approach which may serve as an alternative to the EnKF in some applications. A fairly extensive discussion is devoted to the use of time correlated model errors and the estimation of model bias.

Abstract: Indoor wireless localization using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons has attracted considerable attention after the release of the BLE protocol. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that uses the combination of channel-separate polynomial regression model (PRM), channel-separate fingerprinting (FP), outlier detection and extended Kalman filtering (EKF) for smartphone-based indoor localization with BLE beacons. The proposed algorithm uses FP and PRM to estimate the target’s location and the distances between the target and BLE beacons respectively. We compare the performance of distance estimation that uses separate PRM for three advertisement channels (i.e., the separate strategy) with that use an aggregate PRM generated through the combination of information from all channels (i.e., the aggregate strategy). The performance of FP-based location estimation results of the separate strategy and the aggregate strategy are also compared. It was found that the separate strategy can provide higher accuracy; thus, it is preferred to adopt PRM and FP for each BLE advertisement channel separately. Furthermore, to enhance the robustness of the algorithm, a two-level outlier detection mechanism is designed. Distance and location estimates obtained from PRM and FP are passed to the first outlier detection to generate improved distance estimates for the EKF. After the EKF process, the second outlier detection algorithm based on statistical testing is further performed to remove the outliers. The proposed algorithm was evaluated by various field experiments. Results show that the proposed algorithm achieved the accuracy of <2.56 m at 90% of the time with dense deployment of BLE beacons (1 beacon per 9 m), which performs 35.82% better than <3.99 m from the Propagation Model (PM) + EKF algorithm and 15.77% more accurate than <3.04 m from the FP + EKF algorithm. With sparse deployment (1 beacon per 18 m), the proposed algorithm achieves the accuracies of <3.88 m at 90% of the time, which performs 49.58% more accurate than <8.00 m from the PM + EKF algorithm and 21.41% better than <4.94 m from the FP + EKF algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is especially useful to improve the localization accuracy in environments with sparse beacon deployment.

Abstract: The development of light detection and ranging, Radar, camera, and other advanced sensor technologies inaugurated a new era in autonomous driving. However, due to the intrinsic limitations of these sensors, autonomous vehicles are prone to making erroneous decisions and causing serious disasters. At this point, networking and communication technologies can greatly make up for sensor deficiencies, and are more reliable, feasible and efficient to promote the information interaction, thereby improving autonomous vehicle’s perception and planning capabilities as well as realizing better vehicle control. This paper surveys the networking and communication technologies in autonomous driving from two aspects: intra- and inter-vehicle. The intra-vehicle network as the basis of realizing autonomous driving connects the on-board electronic parts. The inter-vehicle network is the medium for interaction between vehicles and outside information. In addition, we present the new trends of communication technologies in autonomous driving, as well as investigate the current mainstream verification methods and emphasize the challenges and open issues of networking and communications in autonomous driving.
