I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The objective of this study was to develop anatomically correct whole body human models of an adult male (34 years old), an adult female (26 years old) and two children (an 11-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy) for the optimized evaluation of electromagnetic exposure. These four models are referred to as the Virtual Family. They are based on high resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images of healthy volunteers. More than 80 different tissue types were distinguished during the segmentation. To improve the accuracy and the effectiveness of the segmentation, a novel semi-automated tool was used to analyze and segment the data. All tissues and organs were reconstructed as three-dimensional (3D) unstructured triangulated surface objects, yielding high precision images of individual features of the body. This greatly enhances the meshing flexibility and the accuracy with respect to thin tissue layers and small organs in comparison with the traditional voxel-based representation of anatomical models. Conformal computational techniques were also applied. The techniques and tools developed in this study can be used to more effectively develop future models and further improve the accuracy of the models for various applications. For research purposes, the four models are provided for free to the scientific community.

Multi-Grid FDTD Calculation of Electromagnetic Absorption in the Human Head for 5 GHz Band Portable Terminals

A remote, continuous environmental electromagnetic field monitoring system for use in magnetic confinement fusion test facilities is developed. Using this system, both the static magnetic field and the high frequency electromagnetic field could be measured. The required frequency range of the measurement system is from 25 to 100 MHz for the ICRF (Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies) heating system. The outputs from the measurement instruments are measured simultaneously by custom-built software using a laptop-type personal computer connected to a local area network. In this way, the electromagnetic field strength could be monitored from a control room located about 200 m from the fusion device building. Examples of measurement data from the vicinity of a high-frequency generator and amplifier and the leakage static magnetic field from a fusion test device are presented.

A Remote Monitoring System of Environmental Electromagnetic Field in Magnetic Confinement Fusion Test Facilities

To localize implant devices accurately, it is efficient to estimate a human internal structure with incident electromagnetic waves based on an electromagnetic (EM) imaging technique. In order to realize high resolution in such a localization system, it has been pointed out that huge number of measurement points should be required. To solve this problem, we investigated the possibility to apply the sparse reconstruction to the EM imaging-based localization in order to reduce the measurement points without any deterioration in the estimation accuracy. Moreover, we evaluated the estimation accuracy of our location estimation method with the sparse reconstruction by computer simulations. From the results, it is revealed that the sparse reconstruction is acceptable to the EM imaging-based localization, and the proposed method can estimate the location of an implant device with the accuracy of 1cm under a high signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) condition.

An EM imaging-based localization method with sparse reconstruction for implant devices

Electromagnetic disturbances in vehicle-mounted radios are mainly caused by conducted noise currents flowing through wiring-harnesses from vehicle-mounted printed circuit boards (PCBs) with common slitted ground patterns. To investigate suppression of these kinds of noise currents, previous measurements from simple two-layer PCBs with two parallel signal traces with slitted and non-slitted ground patterns, and revealed that making slits with open ends on the ground patterns in parallel with the traces can reduce the conducted noise currents. It was also discovered that the noise currents from PCBs can be suppressed even if the size of the return ground is small. Furthermore, we performed finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, using eight simple two-layer PCB models in which the ground patterns were split into two parts with different widths and one PCB model with a plane ground pattern, and found that cross-talk decreases with widening the width of the ground pattern and has the smallest values at a specific width. In the present study, to confirm the above findings experimentally, we made actual PCB samples according to exactly the same specification as the models used in the FDTD simulation, and measured the cross-talk between the two parallel signal traces with respect to the different widths of ground patterns. The results approximately agreed with the simulation.

Split width effect of ground patterns on FM-band cross-talks between two parallel signal traces of printed circuit boards

Metal-coating plastics are being used as shielding materials for electronic and information terminals due to their light weight. In this paper, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm was newly proposed for analyzing the shielding effectiveness of metal-coating plastics in a broad frequency band. The method was based on the derivation of a time-domain representation of the surface resistance of an equivalent resistive film. The validity of the proposed algorithm, for both far-field and near-field shielding, was verified by comparing the calculated results with theoretical ones. Good agreement was found between them when the size of the shielding material is sufficiently large compared to the wavelength.
