Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The objective of this study was to develop anatomically correct whole body human models of an adult male (34 years old), an adult female (26 years old) and two children (an 11-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy) for the optimized evaluation of electromagnetic exposure. These four models are referred to as the Virtual Family. They are based on high resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images of healthy volunteers. More than 80 different tissue types were distinguished during the segmentation. To improve the accuracy and the effectiveness of the segmentation, a novel semi-automated tool was used to analyze and segment the data. All tissues and organs were reconstructed as three-dimensional (3D) unstructured triangulated surface objects, yielding high precision images of individual features of the body. This greatly enhances the meshing flexibility and the accuracy with respect to thin tissue layers and small organs in comparison with the traditional voxel-based representation of anatomical models. Conformal computational techniques were also applied. The techniques and tools developed in this study can be used to more effectively develop future models and further improve the accuracy of the models for various applications. For research purposes, the four models are provided for free to the scientific community.

Introduction to Electromagnetic Compatibility

With the rapid progress of electronic and information technology, an expectation for the realization of body area network (BAN) has risen. In this study, we proposed a pulse transmission system with frequencies at dozens of mega-hertzes. The system was based on an impulse radio (IR) scheme with bi-phase modulation. By using the frequency-dependent finite difference time domain (FD2TD) method, we investigated the on-body transmission characteristics and derived a path loss expression. We also investigated the influences of Gaussian noises and other narrow-band interferences on the communication link budget and bit error rate (BER) performance.

A High-Frequency Pulse Transmission System on Human Body Area: Simulation and Analysis

This paper investigates the impact of spatial diversity reception on specific absorption rate (SAR) reduction at 400 MHz medical implant communication service (MICS) band. First, in order to calculate the bit error rate (BER) performance under this implant propagation channel and derive the required transmit power to secure a permissible BER, we perform finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations for implant BAN channel modeling with a numerical human body model. Then, we calculate the local peak SAR under the required transmit power when the implant transmitter moves along the digestive organs. Consequently, our simulation results demonstrate that the use of spatial diversity reception can significantly reduce SAR in implant body area networks.

In this study, a communication module based on human body communication was developed to wirelessly control a wearable robot hand based on myoelectric signals. The communication module adopts 10–60 MHz band and an impulse radio multi-pulse position modulation method to achieve low transmission loss and high data rate. A technique to reduce the module size was developed by sharing the myoelectric signal detection electrode and transmitting electrode, and three receiving electrode structures were investigated to improve signal transmission performance. As a result, the developed communication module provides a packet detection rate of 100% and a bit error rate of less than 10−6 up to at least 110 cm along the arm, and a wearable robot hand was demonstrated to be properly controlled based on a human subject’s myoelectric signals.
