The application of (S)-1,10-binaphthyl-2,20-diol as NMR chiral solvating agent (CSA) for omeprazole, and three of its analogs (lanso-, panto-, and rabe-prazole) was investigated. The formation of diastereomeric host–guest complexes in solution between the CSA and the racemic substrates produced sufficient NMR signal splitting for the determination of enantiomeric excesses by Hor F-NMR spectroscopy. Using of hydrophobic deuterated solvents was mandatory for obtaining good enantiodiscrimination, thus suggesting the importance of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the stabilization of the complexes. Conventional methods for carrying out carbon–hydrogen functionalization and carbon–nitrogen bond formation are typically conducted at elevated temperatures, and rely on expensive catalysts as well as the use of stoichiometric, and perhaps toxic, oxidants. In this regard, electrochemical synthesis has recently been recognized as a sustainable and scalable strategy for the construction of challenging carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds. Here, electrosynthesis has proven to be an environmentally benign, highly effective and versatile platform for achieving a wide range of nonclassical bond disconnections via generation of radical intermediates under mild reaction conditions. This review provides an overview on the use of anodic electrochemical methods for expediting the development of carbon–hydrogen functionalization and carbon–nitrogen bond formation strategies. Emphasis is placed on methodology development and mechanistic insight and aims to provide inspiration for future synthetic applications in the field of electrosynthesis.

Ascididemin, a novel pentacyclic aromatic alkaloid with potent antileukemic activity from the Okinawan tunicate Didemnum sp.

Two novel sphingosine-derived azetidine alkaloids, penaresidin A, 1a, and B, 1b, were isolated as potent actomyosin ATPase activators from the Okinawan marine sponge Penares sp. and the structures elucidated on the basis of spectral data, especially two-dimensional NMR spectra of their acetates.
