TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reconstruct the jet spectra from PbPb and PbNb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
Abstract: Inclusive jet spectra from pp and PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, are presented. Jets are reconstructed with three different distance parameters (R=0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) for transverse momentum (pT) greater than 70GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η|<2. Next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamic calculations with nonperturbative corrections are found to overpredict jet production cross sections in pp for small distance parameters. The jet nuclear modification factors for PbPb compared to pp collisions, show a steady decrease from peripheral to central events, along with a weak dependence on the jet pT. They are found to be independent of the distance parameter in the measured kinematic range.

TL;DR: The first measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry and the ratios of Wilson coefficients and in A9/A7 and A10/ a7 in B --> K*l+l-, where l represents an electron or a muon is reported.
Abstract: We report the first measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry and the ratios of Wilson coefficients A{sub 9}/A{sub 7} and A{sub 10}/A{sub 7} in B{yields}K{sup *}l{sup +}l{sup -}, where l represents an electron or a muon. We find evidence for the forward-backward asymmetry with a significance of 3.4{sigma}. The results are obtained from a data sample containing 386x10{sup 6} BB pairs that were collected on the {upsilon}(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the branching fraction for the radiative penguin process B -> X_s gamma from the sum of 38 exclusive final states, and presented fits to the photon spectrum and moments which gave the heavy-quark parameters m_b and mu_pi^2.
Abstract: Using 88.9 million BB events collected by the BaBar detector at the Y(4S), we measure the branching fraction for the radiative penguin process B -> X_s gamma from the sum of 38 exclusive final states. The inclusive branching fraction above a minimum photon energy E_gamma > 1.9 GeV is BF (b -> s gamma) = (3.27 +/- 0.18 (stat.) +0.55/-0.40 (syst.) +0.04/-0.09 (theory)) 10^-4. We also measure the isospin asymmetry between B^- -> X_s ubar gamma and B^0bar -> X_s dbar gamma to be Delta_0- = -0.006 +/- 0.058 (stat.) +/- 0.009 (syst.) +/- 0.024 (B^0bar / B^-). The photon energy spectrum is measured in the B rest frame, from which moments are derived for different values of the minimum photon energy. We present fits to the photon spectrum and moments which give the heavy-quark parameters m_b and mu_pi^2. The fitted parameters are consistent with those obtained from semileptonic B -> X_c l nu decays, and are useful inputs for the extraction of Vub from measurements of semileptonic B -> X_u l nu decays.

TL;DR: The PARP inhibitor represents a novel strategy to enhance the antitumor efficacy and reduce toxicity of chemotherapy in colon cancer and inhibits irinotecan/temozolomide efficacy against colon carcinoma.
Abstract: Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors enhance the antitumor activity of the topoisomerase I inhibitor irinotecan (CPT-11), which is used to treat advanced colorectal carcinoma. Since PARP inhibitors sensitize tumor cells also to the methylating agent temozolomide (TMZ) and clinical trials are evaluating CPT-11 in combination with TMZ, we tested whether the PARP inhibitor GPI 15427 (10-(4-methyl-piperazin-1-ylmethyl)-2H-7-oxa-1,2-diaza-benzo[de]anthracen-3-one) increases the efficacy of CPT-11 + TMZ against colon cancer. Moreover, due to the ability of PARP inhibitors to avoid cell death consequent to PARP-1 overactivation, we evaluated whether oral administration of GPI 15427 provides protection from the dose-limiting intestinal toxicity of CPT-11. The results of colony formation assay indicated that GPI 15427 increased the antiproliferative effects (combination index <1) of TMZ + SN-38 (the active metabolite of CPT-11) against colon cancer cells. Accordingly, GPI 15427 (40 mg/kg/dayx5 days per os) in combination with TMZ (10 mg/kg/dayx5 days) + CPT-11 (4 mg/kg/dayx5 days) significantly reduced the growth of tumor xenografts. Oral administration of GPI 15427 (40 mg/kg/q2x3 days) prevented intestinal injury and diarrhea induced by CPT-11 (30 mg/kg/day x 3 days) reducing inflammation and PARP-1 overactivation, as evidenced by immunohistochemical staining of intestinal tissue with antipoly(ADP-ribose) antibody (Ab). In conclusion, the PARP inhibitor represents a novel strategy to enhance the antitumor efficacy and reduce toxicity of chemotherapy in colon cancer.

TL;DR: In this article, the pseudorapidity gap distributions in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV are studied using a minimum bias data sample with an integrated luminosity of 7.1 mu b(-1).
Abstract: Pseudorapidity gap distributions in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV are studied using a minimum bias data sample with an integrated luminosity of 7.1 mu b(-1). Cross sections are measured differentially in terms of Delta eta(F), the larger of the pseudorapidity regions extending to the limits of the ATLAS sensitivity, at eta = +/- 4.9, in which no final state particles are produced above a transverse momentum threshold p(T)(cut). The measurements span the region 0 Xp), enhanced by double dissociation (pp -> XY) where the invariant mass of the lighter of the two dissociation systems satisfies M-Y less than or similar to 7 GeV. The resulting cross section is ds sigma/d Delta eta(F) approximate to 1 mb for Delta eta(F) greater than or similar to 3. The large rapidity gap data are used to constrain the value of the Pomeron intercept appropriate to triple Regge models of soft diffraction. The cross section integrated over all gap sizes is compared with other LHC inelastic cross section measurements.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This study enters into the particular topics of the relative quantification in real-time RT-PCR of a target gene transcript in comparison to a reference gene transcript and presents a new mathematical model that needs no calibration curve.
Abstract: Use of the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify cDNA products reverse transcribed from mRNA is on the way to becoming a routine tool in molecular biology to study low abundance gene expression. Real-time PCR is easy to perform, provides the necessary accuracy and produces reliable as well as rapid quantification results. But accurate quantification of nucleic acids requires a reproducible methodology and an adequate mathematical model for data analysis. This study enters into the particular topics of the relative quantification in real-time RT–PCR of a target gene transcript in comparison to a reference gene transcript. Therefore, a new mathematical model is presented. The relative expression ratio is calculated only from the real-time PCR efficiencies and the crossing point deviation of an unknown sample versus a control. This model needs no calibration curve. Control levels were included in the model to standardise each reaction run with respect to RNA integrity, sample loading and inter-PCR variations. High accuracy and reproducibility (<2.5% variation) were reached in LightCycler PCR using the established mathematical model.
