Abstract: We present a general mesh-free description of the magnetic field distribution in various electromagnetic machines, actuators, and devices. Our method is based on transfer relations and Fourier theory, which gives the magnetic field solution for a wide class of two-dimensional (2-D) boundary value problems. This technique can be applied to rotary, linear, and tubular permanent-magnet actuators, either with a slotless or slotted armature. In addition to permanent-magnet machines, this technique can be applied to any 2-D geometry with the restriction that the geometry should consist of rectangular regions. The method obtains the electromagnetic field distribution by solving the Laplace and Poisson equations for every region, together with a set of boundary conditions. Here, we compare the method with finite-element analyses for various examples and show its applicability to a wide class of geometries.

Abstract: This paper offers motivations for an electromagnetic active suspension system that provides both additional stability and maneuverability by performing active roll and pitch control during cornering and braking, as well as eliminating road irregularities, hence increasing both vehicle and passenger safety and drive comfort. Various technologies are compared with the proposed electromagnetic suspension system that uses a tubular permanent-magnet actuator (TPMA) with a passive spring. Based on on-road measurements and results from the literature, several specifications for the design of an electromagnetic suspension system are derived. The measured on-road movement of the passive suspension system is reproduced by electromagnetic actuation on a quarter car setup, proving the dynamic capabilities of an electromagnetic suspension system.

Abstract: The efficiency and power consumption of a direct-drive electromagnetic active suspension system for automotive applications are investigated. A McPherson suspension system is considered, where the strut consists of a direct-drive brushless tubular permanent-magnet actuator in parallel with a passive spring and damper. This suspension system can both deliver active forces and regenerate power due to imposed movements. A linear quadratic regulator controller is developed for the improvement of comfort and handling (dynamic tire load). The power consumption is simulated as a function of the passive damping in the active suspension system. Finally, measurements are performed on a quarter-car test setup to validate the analysis and simulations.

Abstract: With the emergence of energy related issues in the automotive sector, there is a tendency to find new efficient solutions to replace existing electrical machinery. One promising candidate is the flux switching permanent magnet machine (FSPMM). Due to its challenging structure and nonlinear characteristic, in the investigation of the machine, generally finite element method (FEM), and rarely the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), are implemented. The following paper introduces an alternative analytical modeling technique by means of a hybrid model, which combines the advantages of the MEC and the Fourier analysis.

Abstract: Permanent magnet (PM) brushless machines having magnets and windings in stator (the so-called stator-PM machines) have attracted more and more attention in the past decade due to its definite advantages of robust structure, high power density, high efficiency, etc. In this paper, an overview of the stator-PM machine is presented, with particular emphasis on concepts, operation principles, machine topologies, electromagnetic performance, and control strategies. Both brushless ac and dc operation modes are described. The key features of the machines, including the merits and drawbacks of the machines, are summarized. Moreover, the latest development of the machines is also discussed.

Abstract: Hybrid and electric vehicle technology has seen rapid development in recent years. The motor and the generator are at the heart of the vehicle drive and energy system and often utilize expensive rare-earth permanent magnet (PM) material. This paper reviews and addresses the research work that has been carried out to reduce the amount of rare-earth material that is used while maintaining the high efficiency and performance that rare-earth PM machines offer. These new machines can use either less rare-earth PM material, weaker ferrite magnets, or no magnets; and they need to meet the high performance that the more usual interior PM synchronous motor with sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnets provides. These machines can take the form of PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machines, induction machines, switched reluctance machines, wound rotor synchronous machines (claw pole or biaxially excited), double-saliency machines with ac or dc stator current control, or brushless dc multiple-phase reluctance machines.

Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of vibration control in vehicle active suspension systems, whose aim is to stabilize the attitude of the vehicle and improve ride comfort. In response to uncertainties in systems and the possible actuator saturation, a saturated adaptive robust control (ARC) strategy is proposed. Specifically, an antiwindup block is added to adjust the control strategy in a manner conducive to stability and performance preservation in the presence of saturation. Furthermore, the proposed saturated ARC approach is applied to the half-car active suspension systems, where nonlinear springs and piecewise linear dampers are adopted. Finally, the typical bump road inputs are considered as the road disturbances in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control law.
