Doing Heideggerian hermeneutic research: A discussion paper

Action research concerns action, and transforming people’s practices (as well as their understandings of their practices and the conditions under which they practise). Sometimes we may feel that action research works best when it contributes to our understandings. In this paper, by contrast, I want to explore the ‘happening‐ness’ of action and practice, as they are lived and changed by action research. I want to explore the place of action research in shaping and making history by changing what is done. The central argument of this paper is that, while action research certainly does contribute to theory, it also, and perhaps more importantly, contributes to history.

What is to be done? The place of action research

This thesis examines the typical nature of design thinking, which is compared and contrasted with scientific and political thinking. A theretical framework is formulated and applied to landscape planning and design. During the 20th century the established operational orientation in landscape architecture was accompanied by an emerging strategic design approach, referred to as 'research by design'. Two cases of large scale landscape planning and design in the netherlands are given in this publication: the restructuring of sandy soil areas programme and the Stork Plan for Rhine-Meuse floodplain in the central belt of the Netherlands

Landscape architecture between politics and science: an integrative perspective on landscape planning and design in the network society.

This commentary offers an outsider’s perspectives on this Deleuzian- and Baradian-inspired constellation of ideas on “post-qualitative research.” My perspectives engage three primary issues: First, is this way of thinking about post-qualitative research still research? Second, the “post” part of the “post-qualitative research” label suggests movement and trajectory, but from where and, perhaps more importantly, to where and to what? And third, what is being accomplished by this shift to a post-qualitative framing of the social world, and what is being lost?

Evaluation and/as Social Relation:

I will now discuss the talking cure in its relation to mental disorder to highlight differences between an empirical approach and an elucidatory one. Freud, Jung and the cognitive therapists were psychologists whose quest was the essential structure of the mind and the causes of neurosis and psychosis. In the early twentieth century Freud and Jung formed an enthusiastic partnership to further ‘the cause’. Freud wrote, ‘Nothing can befall our cause as long as the understanding between you and me remains unclouded’ (McGuire 1974, 212 F, October 1910). Jung wrote, ‘Anyone who knows your science has veritably eaten of the tree of paradise and become clairvoyant’ (Ibid., 28 J, May 1907).
