Electrochemical capacitors, also called supercapacitors, store energy using either ion adsorption (electrochemical double layer capacitors) or fast surface redox reactions (pseudo-capacitors). They can complement or replace batteries in electrical energy storage and harvesting applications, when high power delivery or uptake is needed. A notable improvement in performance has been achieved through recent advances in understanding charge storage mechanisms and the development of advanced nanostructured materials. The discovery that ion desolvation occurs in pores smaller than the solvated ions has led to higher capacitance for electrochemical double layer capacitors using carbon electrodes with subnanometre pores, and opened the door to designing high-energy density devices using a variety of electrolytes. Combination of pseudo-capacitive nanomaterials, including oxides, nitrides and polymers, with the latest generation of nanostructured lithium electrodes has brought the energy density of electrochemical capacitors closer to that of batteries. The use of carbon nanotubes has further advanced micro-electrochemical capacitors, enabling flexible and adaptable devices to be made. Mathematical modelling and simulation will be the key to success in designing tomorrow's high-energy and high-power devices.

Materials for electrochemical capacitors

In this critical review, metal oxides-based materials for electrochemical supercapacitor (ES) electrodes are reviewed in detail together with a brief review of carbon materials and conducting polymers. Their advantages, disadvantages, and performance in ES electrodes are discussed through extensive analysis of the literature, and new trends in material development are also reviewed. Two important future research directions are indicated and summarized, based on results published in the literature: the development of composite and nanostructured ES materials to overcome the major challenge posed by the low energy density of ES (476 references).

A review of electrode materials for electrochemical supercapacitors

This tutorial review provides a brief summary of recent research progress on carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitors, as well as the importance of electrolytes in the development of supercapacitor technology. The basic principles of supercapacitors, the characteristics and performances of various nanostructured carbon-based electrode materials are discussed. Aqueous and non-aqueous electrolyte solutions used in supercapacitors are compared. The trend on future development of high-power and high-energy supercapacitors is analyzed.

Carbon-based materials as supercapacitor electrodes

Supercapacitors, also called ultracapacitors or electrochemical capacitors, store electrical charge on high-surface-area conducting materials. Their widespread use is limited by their low energy storage density and relatively high effective series resistance. Using chemical activation of exfoliated graphite oxide, we synthesized a porous carbon with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of up to 3100 square meters per gram, a high electrical conductivity, and a low oxygen and hydrogen content. This sp 2 -bonded carbon has a continuous three-dimensional network of highly curved, atom-thick walls that form primarily 0.6- to 5-nanometer-width pores. Two-electrode supercapacitor cells constructed with this carbon yielded high values of gravimetric capacitance and energy density with organic and ionic liquid electrolytes. The processes used to make this carbon are readily scalable to industrial levels.

People today are very familiar with different battery technologies, from small zinc-air button cells to AAA alkali cells to spiral wound lithium ion laptop batteries to fifty-pound lead acid batteries found in automobiles. This situation has come about because people rely heavily on battery power. Common battery applications include, for instance, power for cell phones, Sony Walkman, PDAs, laptop computers, Ipod players, digital cameras, and on and on. In sharp contrast, people today are much less familiar with capacitor technologies, although capacitors also store energy.

Electrochemical Capacitors: Challenges and Opportunities for Real-World Applications

Because the charge is stored physically, with no chemical or phase changes taking place, the process is highly reversible and the discharge-charge cycle can be repeated over and over again, virtually without limit. Electrochemical capacitors (ECs), variously referred to by manufacturers in promotional literature as \" supercapacitors \" or \" ultracapacitors, \" store electrical charge in an electric double layer at the interface between a high-surface-area carbon electrode and a liquid electrolyte. 1,2 Consequently, they are also quite properly referred to as electric double layer capacitors. A simple EC can be constructed by inserting two conductors in a beaker containing an electrolyte, for example, two carbon rods in salt water (Fig. 1). Initially there is no measurable voltage between the two rods, but when the switch is closed and current is caused to flow from one rod to the other by a battery, charge separation is naturally created at each liquid-solid interface. This effectively creates two capacitors that are series-connected by the electrolyte. Voltage persists after the switch is opened—energy has been stored. In this state, solvated ions in the electrolyte are attracted to the solid surface by an equal but opposite charge in the solid. These two parallel regions of charge form the source of the term \" double layer. \" Charge separation is measured in molecular dimensions (i.e., few angstroms), and the surface area is measured in thousands of square meters per gram of electrode material, creating 5 kF capacitors that can be hand-held. The very feature of an electrochemical capacitor that makes such high capacitances possible, namely the highly porous high-surface-area electrodes, is also the reason for the relatively slow response of these devices compared to conventional capacitors. To illustrate the reason, Fig. 2 shows an idealistic representation of a cross-section of a pore in a nanoporous carbon material, where it is shown as a cylinder filled with electrolyte and in which an electric double layer covers the interior wall surface of the pore. 3 Electrical connections to the stored charge are made through the solid carbon surrounding the pore and through the electrolyte from the mouth of the pore, electrolyte conductivity being much less than carbon conductivity. Charge stored near the pore mouth is accessible through a short path with small electrolyte resistance.
